I myself have been aiming for the same colors and I am leanig towards a Log Cabin pattern, I even thought of the Rail Fence, but the one with the 6 strips cut 1 1/2" wide. I already have some of the material for it.

kkg916 10-22-2010 08:29 AM

So funny--I am also a new quilter and my next project is a black/white/red quilt. I was thinking a simple 4patch of black and whites with red sashing, but there are so many other ideas here!
Beautiful stuff ladies!

Here's a link on this board for the Orion Star in black/white/red. I am finishing a similar one but don't have a picture of it. The pattern is in the Orion Star book by Eleanor Burns.

Welcome to the board. How about trying Eleanor Burns Day & Night. You can either do this quilt in two colors or three. I am currently making a gold and black (college colors) quilt for my daughter using this pattern. The pattern is alot of fun (ruler included) and Connecting Threads has it on sale for $16.77. A great price. They have all of their books 40% off until Nov. 1st.

amokcanuck 10-22-2010 10:07 AM

I do have a wonderful red quilt pattern for you that I will post when I am back on Sunday nite, going away on a quilting retreat now, talk later. It will lend itself great for your black and white with red.

My SIL made her first quilt in black and white and red. It was Moda precut black and white squares, and a few red ones from fabric I had. It was easy for her and i think she did a pretty good job for her first quilt.

It was a pattern given to us for a class with Mark Lipinski. He designed it for the class. Actually, everyone's was different as he just had us make pieces, then we could lay them out any way we wanted to. If I can find the instructions ( they should be with my other patterns,but.... ) I can give them to you if you PM me. Glad you like the quilt!

G'ma Kay 10-22-2010 10:56 AM

I saw one in the photo sections on here a week or so ago. It was like a log cabin with black and white, the center square was red. it was striking!

vburr 10-22-2010 11:32 AM

Here's one more to add to all the others. This is a D9P and I used 10 different fabrics to really mix it up.

Lovely!! what size is the finished quilt with 24 fat quarters?

I agree. If you want quick and simple the Disappearing 9 Patch is perfect. Here's a couple done with just three fabrics each. Squares in the blue were cut 3.5 inches, squares in pink were 4.5.

I am in the progress of making one of these now, and it looks fantastic!

I just finished a class on HST and am doing my quilt in black and white. I found a really pretty print for the border that is large scale black and white and to separate it from the piecing I am going to use a small yellow border. I love the way the yellow makes the black and white pop and that it is a little different.

kacy 49 10-22-2010 02:42 PM

Welcome from Oklahoma. I too love the black, white and splash of red quilts. They are just so pretty. Hope you find a pattern that you like.

Quiltfanatic 10-22-2010 02:54 PM

I did a black and white with turquoise by using the disappearing block pattern. It worked out beautifully. This is an Eleanor Burns pattern. There are several other names for it as well.

I happen to take a picture of this quilt a few weeks ago at the NW Quilt show in Portland, Oregon. I thought it looked like a fun easy quilt to make. Good luck in your search.

just saw a Snail's Trail in black, white, red. Smashing !

desertrose 10-22-2010 06:00 PM

Ann, I like your balance of the colors, not to dark and not too bright however, a very nice result.

Andie

desertrose 10-22-2010 06:05 PM

Helen welcome from Arizona...I haven't made a black/white/red quilt but if you want suggestions you've come to the right place. There's more knowledge here than on any other site you'll find.

Best of luck with your project and will be looking for the finished pictures.
Andie :-) :-) :-)

Eleanor Burn's Quilt in a Day, "Day & Night" quilt book is beautiful in Red/Black/White. I have this quilt started and LOVE it. Her instructions are wonderful!!

akgranny 10-22-2010 07:26 PM

i have black and whites in my stash for a braid ..... 4 panels wide with red top quilting and a skinny red border around them and a wide black boarder printed with 1 1/2 inch white flowers.

Patty 10-22-2010 07:32 PM

A couple of months ago someone displayed one they had made and it was beautiful. I have my squares cut out and that is what I will be working on next after I finish my crayon quilt. Wish mine was done and I could be your new best friend!!!

butterflyquilter 10-22-2010 08:30 PM

I made a black and whit e rag quilt. Then I sewed red hearts all over it. It was so cute.

weezie 10-22-2010 08:59 PM

I downloaded a PDF, "Black & White With a Touch of Red" several months ago. It was a free pattern from Blank Quilting. The size shown is 74" x 82". It needs 7 black fabrics, 4 red, and 7 white. I'm not a huge fan of black & white quilts, with or without red, but I really like this one, so hope you can find it and take a look.

Lee Benedict 10-23-2010 05:14 AM

I have also used the yellow Brick Road pattern for a Black and
White Quilt with a Red for the "zinner". Loved the way it turned out

Kellie G 10-23-2010 06:54 AM

Welcome from another Michigan quilter! I agree with the D9P. That is exactly what I am doing, I think I have just enough black and white fabric now to begin.
