Same thing happened to me with a kit. They substituted 3 different fabrics including a Christmas fabric. This was not a Christmas quilt! I complained (Not only were there substitutions but the fabric was short.) This was an online QS. She said the kit was on sale so I should have known there were substitutions. Wouldn't refund because it was on sale. I will never go back.

quiltlin 01-09-2011 06:28 AM

Can understand the "supply" problem but at the beginning they should have said that there was a problem and given the customer a choice. Not very good for public relations for the store.

purrfectquilts 01-09-2011 06:40 AM

They should have told you they were making a substitution. I once bought a kit and when it came the fabric was not the same as the picture. I still haven't made it up because the main fabric is ugly to me. I should have returned it but the extra shipping was too much for me at the time. Still irritates me.

I would mention to the LQS manager about your feelings and show her that it is not working. Give her the chance to give you a different fabric if you are not too far along, or a discount for future, or something!

Although, once you have it made and quilted, it may look a lot better than you think it is going to. The quilting makes a world of difference in tying things together.

fabricmaniac 01-09-2011 06:43 AM

Completely the fault of the shop! And to think you already spent so much time cutting and sewing! You have every right to complain or demand a refund or at least the opportunity to pick your own substitute. I never buy kits for this very reason, plus I know so many who do and end up short of fabric. I am good at picking my own and often go shopping with others who have difficulty putting fabrics together. I love doing so.

grannypat7925 01-09-2011 06:47 AM

I would definitely complain. You didn't get what you thought you were getting and weren't told about the substitution. That isn't right!

KarenR 01-09-2011 06:48 AM

I would take it back and have them help find a new material or ask them to refund your money. You did not get you paid for. Bad Business.
You can maybe pick out a fabric to use - Give them that option too. An Exchange

hikingquilter 01-09-2011 06:49 AM

I agree with others here. You are NOT being unreasonable. You should get what was promised and paid for. The shop should have been up-front and told you and let you choose your own substitution. At the least they should now offer a discount on your chosen substitution or a refund on the unwanted fabric you have purchased already.

330doris 01-09-2011 07:09 AM

I would be really upset! This is not what you expected! Why not copy all these responses and give it to the shop owner. They were not honest with you. If they were, they would let you pick out a fabric you liked better. It's your room you are decorating. It's you who helps keep their shop open for business and they should not want to lose your business!

Lucy90 01-09-2011 07:11 AM

I would look on line for the fabric and if you can find it tell the quilt shop THEY have to PAY for it. If you can't find the fabric then you get a very good discount or all you money back. I would not be very happy and would very seriously demand a refund if fabric cannot be found.

skothing 01-09-2011 07:15 AM

I bought a kit from keepsake and had fallowed directions to a T. When I had completed 98% found it was short 5 inches. Called and talked to customer service and said I was at fault as I washed fabric. I replied that washing fabric was in directions. She refused to send 5 inches. Never bought from them again.

I would of blown a fit, that is so dishonest. if they didn't have a fabric to compliment it that you like, I'd go and buy it else where. And ask for money back to purchase other fabric.Didn.t anyone else realize the switch??

I just have to agree,I'd feel duped also and would not shop there if it was the last store on earth. with the internet we have a whole world ahead of us. apparently they don't realize the competition they have.

steelecg 01-09-2011 08:49 AM

I have sworn off BOMs for that very reason - they are expensive and not always what you see. I feel like that if fabrics are going to be changed then the buyer needs to be able to help choose what she thinks will be best for her or at least told that they are going to be different.

klgreene 01-09-2011 09:05 AM

Oh absolutely. THe one and only kit I bought had exactly what the sample looked like, which is why I bought it. Had they substituted something I didn't like in it, I would have been very very upset.

Maralyn 01-09-2011 09:16 AM

At the very least, I would ask for a refund if there is no mention of substitutions in the original instructions/packet.

Aunt Fanny 01-09-2011 09:21 AM

If I bought a Mercedes & came home with a Volkswagon... just sayin'...

Jbarrow 01-09-2011 09:50 AM

This is why I don't buy kits...I have seen several and either not all fabrics were the same as the sampler or they didn't have more fabric to make kit larger...I have only bought one kit and then was able to add other fabric to it to make it work...Definately they should let you sub other fabric...

matraina 01-09-2011 10:24 AM

For one thing, you paid for something and got something else. They should have told you what they were substituting and given you the choice of buying or not buying. I would be upset, too. I think I would ask them to let you pick your own substitutions or return the whole thing.

Dee Dee 01-09-2011 11:44 AM

Similar thing happened to me. I dislike the substituted fabric so much that I never finished the 2008 BOM. They said they could not get the original fabric in and the substitute they chose was the best they could do. I was very disappointed.

Matilda 01-09-2011 12:27 PM

I would complain too. They should let you pick the fabric so long as it is within the price range of the fabric in the original kit.

I honestly think they made an awful choice with the fabric substitution and think I should have been told I was getting something different than what I ordered. Have you had this happen? Am I being unreasonable? I feel duped.

JeanDal 01-09-2011 12:47 PM

No, you are not being unreasonable. You should have been able to sub what you wanted.

Cyn 01-09-2011 12:50 PM

I would not be happy bout this at all!

Diecy 01-09-2011 12:53 PM

Not unreasonable. The should have contacted you and let you know of the fabric change and ask if you still wanted to purchase the kit. That's only common courtesy and good customer relation practice.

joy 01-09-2011 12:54 PM

You should be reimbursed.... take the offending fabric back, whether it has been cut or not.... and demand another material or else be reimbursed.... not your fault at all...

AnnieH 01-09-2011 12:56 PM

No, definitely not unreasonable.

MadQuilter 01-09-2011 12:59 PM

I think they should have posted a disclaimer that some of the fabric may be different. Then you could have checked to see if you like it. That said, as soon as you realized that you didn't like the fabric, why didn't you pick up a fabric that you DO like? I know it is extra expense but in the end, the substitution might be the perfect fabric for a different project.

Sewfanatic40 01-09-2011 01:45 PM

I dont think you are being unreasonable at all they could have at least told you or ask maybe took up a poll

bigsister63 01-09-2011 02:07 PM

You should "demand " your money back since you do not really like the substitute fabric. If you liked the fabric choice that would be different. The kit and all materials should be refunded even if cut. This can be a very expensive projectt. If they give you any hassel then do not shop them any more. The economy is too tight for stores to lose customers.

ReeneeD 01-09-2011 02:11 PM

That's a bummer! I know just how you feel. Write a letter and get it out of your system - keep your blood pressure down.

busyasabee 01-09-2011 02:18 PM

Well, let's say I go to the furniture store and buy a couch that's red. They deliver a purple couch with pink and green polka dots because they are sold out of the red couches and the factory no longer manufactures red ones. I'd get my money back. You paid for a service which isn't being rendered.
I'd feel frustrated, too. Until you've resolved it with the shop, this issue will continue to bother you each time you shop there-- if you continue to do so. Hope it works out for you. Sorry for the frustration.

Tweety2911 01-09-2011 02:40 PM

I think it was not fair of the store without asking you first. If you really hate the fabric and the store can't or won't give you the original fabric you can try ordering it online so that you will be happy with your quilt. I wish you lots of luck!

craftymatt2 01-09-2011 03:48 PM

I also feel you are not being unreasonable, fabric is expensive as it is, you should get what you pay for, I think you should take it back and say something.

Leota 01-09-2011 03:55 PM

How long ago did you buy the finishing kit? I would take it back and request/demand a refund or the fabric that you expected.... YES they can order additional fabric.... especially if it's a new fabric. Bad publicity is not something they want it's the old 3:33 rule... if you like the service you tell 3 people if you don't like it you tell 33 people...

Mattee 01-09-2011 03:59 PM

Or the whole quilting board. :)

lfstamper 01-09-2011 04:15 PM

I had a similar situation with a kit I bought. I had to convince the shop that this was not good for customer service. They eventually replaced the backing with what they showed.

Mary Bird 01-09-2011 04:20 PM

I teach a block of the month and there are always headaches. Imagine having 26 people sign up, you buy bolts of fabric to accommodate all of them, then 15 go to Florida for the winter and don't purchase the fabric. I now have my students purchase their own fabrics. I'm not stuck with bolts and they get what they want.

BettyGee 01-09-2011 04:27 PM

You are not being unreasonable at all and I would complain loudly. Supply problems do crop up, but they should have been up front with you and advised you so you could make a selection. With what fabric costs, plus the fact that kits invariably cost more than the sum of the parts, you should be allowed a deep discount. Just my opinion, of course, but that is just not right.

duckydo 01-09-2011 04:35 PM

My lqs has had BOM b4 and they have substituted fabric, but it was in from the same designer and it was a color close to the one that was shown in the kit. It did not cause a problem, but I agree with you, if you are not happy you should explain to the shop owner that you have invested alot of money and you are not happy. She is in business because of customer being satisfied, if she starts getting lots of folks unhappy she will start to see it in her sales, and it is not easy to keep a fabric shop going now days. I definatley let her know.
