I don't know what pattern but I think I would use the first group of fabric. Although the Star Wars and space fabric is neat, it all reads kind of medium blue to me and would be difficult to get enough contrast in the quilt top.

There is a pattern called "Just Can't Cut It" that showcases large scale prints. It would be great for both sets of your friend's fabrics.

I, too, would probably do shadow box. Also good would be just strips WOF 9-12" or so like you've shown the fabrics here, but you have at least 2 quilts. One for the animals and one for the Star Wars/space. Look at the repeat for the fabric and choose the width or size of squares from that.

Thank you. Excuse my ignorance but how do you shadow box? By that do you mean bordering each piece of designed fabric with toning fabric? So far I have got as far as dividing the fabric with spaceships into three 12 bands! I'm holding fire at the moment because I just can't make up my mind!

I found a pattern to copy for shadow box which I can use for both sets of fabrics. I think I will gave to call this one my OCD quilt because of the amount of measuring that went on before I committed to the rotary cutters. I think three of these ought to be sufficient for a centre panel for the quilt.

Oops that poor astronaut has lost his head! I must make sure it pops up alongside?

I am laughing out loud right now!

(And I think those blocks look great.) (Even without his head.)
