Block placement gone wrong!
1 Attachment(s)
What to do, what to do?!? Making a boy and girl quilt for twins and After quilting the boy quilt discovered that I have a square turned the wrong direction for the pattern. :( Should I rip out the quilting and try to fix or leave as is? How easy/hard might that be? It's 3 rows from the bottom and about 1/3 of the way toward the middle from the side. The idea was for them to be identical except for color.
It's such a busy pattern that to my eye, it doesn't stand out. I Finally found the half square white/black stripe block that is the culprit. Personally, since you are at the stage you are at, if it were my quilt I would leave it.
However, if it bothers You a lot, then start ripping. By all means though, do not feel obliged to point it out to the recipient. |
Thank you--yes, that's the culprit! It Is a busy pattern, it's Rocksteady by Suzy Quilts--and I didn't even see it until I was trying to follow the 'S'--and you know, step back and enjoy the finished quilting. I almost started ripping last night--but I've spray basted and I wondered how much I would stretch everything trying to get to it. And if I leave it, I don't plan on pointing it out! :)
I would have to study your pictures very carefully to pick it out. Don't worry about it! Beautiful quilts!
Thank you for the compliment! I guess when You know you're mistake your eye is just immediately drawn to it--I very much appreciate your response!
I personally had to look and look and look to find it. I would leave it alone. And, truly, if you hadn't pointed out that there was a mistake, I never would have noticed it. But, if it bothers you, you can take it out and turn it. But, it is going to take some time. So, really, it is up to you.
They are both very striking. They look great!! |
It isn't really noticeable but if it bothers you, you can piece a replacement piece and ladder stitch applique over the offending spot.
I pride myself on being very good at playing "spot the difference" between 2 pictures but this one had me stumped for quite a while.
It is certainly not obvious to those who are not told. Please let us know if you decide to make it "your Amish" Quilt or change it. |
I've been staring at it and from that photo I have yet to spot the difference!
edit: Just found it but honestly I don't think most people will ever notice 'in real life' unless they were told to hunt for it and even then.... I would leave it |
Ya'll make me feel so much better about it! Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm not quite sure my hand sewing is up to par enough to applique over it--but that is something I hadn't thought of. Maybe the parents will be so busy with the babies they won't have time to play "spot the difference!" :) That made me laugh--I hadn't actually thought about those!
:) That makes me feel better! I guess we are all human, right!
Looks good to me! I wouldn't worry about it. If they spot it, act surprised and offer to fix it. "smile"
If the parents notice and ask about it tell them it's a skill building exercise for the kids and make them promise to let the kids find it.
Often twins have secret ways to "tell the difference". They dont tell anyone either. I vote you leave it as is.
Oh my! My old eyes had a tough time finding it. Don't change it. I read somewhere that the Amish say that nothing is perfect outside of God, and they make a "mistake" on every quilt they make on purpose. If anyone finds this one on yours, just tell them that it's an Amish pattern. :)
Way too hard to find the misplacement! Leave it and if they spot the mistake and say something, smile and ask them if they spotted the mistake on the the pink quilt!
I have tried and tried, but can't find the misplaced piece. I would take Wesing's advice and make it a "find the error" game for the kids as they grow older.
Had a heck of a time finding it. I'd leave it and not mention it.

Love this idea!!
I very much appreciate all the kind words, ideas, suggestions and everyone taking the time to look and respond!! I honestly feel so much better about it and no longer have the urge to fix it! I love the idea of asking if they “can spot the error on the pink one”, find the error game and then I learned something new about the Amish!
I spent quite a bit of time looking for the problem and I haven't found it. I vote for leaving it and claiming an Amish pattern. I especially like the idea of smiling and asking if they found the one on the pink one!!
If, the babies are a boy and a girl, they will not be identical, so not to worry. Took me a while to find the mistake which to you is obvious only because you know it's there. Great looking quilts.
I, too, had to look for a bit before I could find the HST and honestly don’t think anyone would notice...especially if a child is all swaddled up in it or it is bunched up in a crib. I’m sure your fantastic quilts will get plenty of love.
The baby won't even notice! It is amazing.
I would leave as is, your quilts look great what we can see. You know there is only ONE that is perfect.
It is not a mistake - it is a unique design element assuring no one will ever have a matching quilt! He is special! (and, if you don't point it out he we probably not see it!)
I've made far worse mistakes, ones that had to be taken out. This one is so minor and hard to find - I would definitely leave it as-is. No one but another quilter would ever notice, and then only if you pointed it out first.
I had to look and look and look before I found it. It doesn't detract from the beauty of the quilt in any way even once you find it. Given that, and that you've already quilted it, I am adding to the chorus of leave it in!
If you don't tell them, I bet they'll never notice. It can also be fun to tell someone there is a block turned the wrong way but don't point out which one. I did that once and the recipient will sometimes look for it when he's using the quilt, but he has yet to find it. It might sound corny, but it's made the quilt more special. Tell the twins when they're old enough to play the find-the-misplaced-block game. :) |
I would leave it especially since the quilting has been done. If it really bothers you, create an applique to put on both quilts at that spot. Initials would work.
Leave it! You can even think of it as an intentional design choice. Even though they are twins, they are unique and it is represented in the quilts. It's so hard to find the difference that I don't think anyone would even find it unless you pointed it out!
Like Angela Walter says, "a finished quilt is better than a perfect quilt". |
I say leave it as is. Years ago, I made a quilt, and when I picked it up from the LA'er, and she said "Do you know one of your blocks is backwards?". She looked and looked, to point it out to me, and, even knowing it was there, she couldn't find that mistake again. Every once in a while, I look for that mistake, and still have a hard time finding it, lol.
If it really Bothers you, you could carefully appliqué a patch going the right way, then trim away the other or leave it, and quilt to match what you started.
Oh heavens... fagetaboutit! It's so hard to spot, especially by a non-quilter. Not a big enough deal to change.
Nice quilts. I would leave the error alone. It's not noticeable at all. By the way the Amish myth of making a mistake is just that a myth. Several Amish quilters told me that no Amish never intentionally made a mistake in doing anything. To believe that they could be perfect was vain.
I am pretty sure if the parents aren't quilters they will not have a clue. And probably put the quilts down backing side up! At least that is the experience of most of my quilting friends when they get pictures
you made them with a difference because even twins are different. lovely quilts!!
I thought u ment for it to be that way.
It sounds like only the blue one is quilted so I suppose you could change the pink one to match the blue.
I think the error makes it look like one of those MC Escher art works where the stairs somehow come back on themselves. It's more interesting that way, and maybe the babes will turn out more creative because of it.
And the biggest thing is to not bother to even point it out to anyone. Such a busy quilt, one little HST is not going to damage the overall look of this complicated pattern.
