changing the colors
 

I have an Alletaire half done. It is made from two different blocks, but when you put them together is makes a great quilt. I did change the colors and I really messed it up. My goal is to get it finished and take it to Shipshewana in 2019 when Bonnie Hunter is there. I have one set of blocks done and nothing I do makes me happy about the second block. It just doesn't go together.

Lately several of the wonderful quilters on this board have tried to help me. I hope I can tackle that one next. I looked on Pinterest and got some inspiration to change the red and gold to green and purple. Somehow I got some coral in there.....I'm really in trouble.

I have the En Provence top finished but not quilted and I used Bonnie's color choices. Still working on Ringo Lake and again used Bonnie's choices because I had not used coral in quilts and also love the combination of brown and turquoise. I am making On Ringo Lake smaller (30 blocks instead of 50). Alletiere is still in progress but I lost interest and life got in the way. I bought 1 fat quarter for On Ringo lake, the remaining fabric was in my stash, even the coral which I unearthed.

I usually use my own colours. I use her hints (this is dark, that's light, these need to contrast - she is really good about providing guidance I think) and usually start with my stash. This year I went all out, found a print I loved the colours of and picked my 4 colours from that (the original print will be the backing). Even when I do Bonnie's colours, I just use them as a guideline. I never get the paint chips (tried once, failed miserably). I prefer to pick what I like together. So if she's using teal & salmon, I might end up with a greener teal than hers, or a pinker salmon - but as long as I like the 2 colours together, that's what matters.

For the quilt you are trying to replicate - that's what I would suggest. Get the fabric you are sure of, then audition a bunch of grey/cream/blue and see which looks best in the grouping to your eye (or the eye of the fabric shop staff - they are usually a great resource for colour matching if you have a local shop).
