did you look on alibris.com?

Here is a link to photo showing the Prizewinning Quilt "An American Sampler Quilt" by Tina Day and Thea Jirak.

It is a beauty. Those one-of-a-kind embroidered blocks could be re-created in a similar way, using your own creativity, of course.

I was just looking at it...It seems rather easy to make one similar.

Along with the name of the book, please send a picture! I'm sure lots of us are like me: I have so many books that I may not recognize a title but I know by the cover if I have it.

I just bought a book from e bay that has been out of print for over 10 years at least because the copyright was 1987. So it is out there for you to find. You can search the book there are a lot of used book stores on the web.

If this is the quilt, then why not create your own design? Use red, white, and blue in various older block designs, or find another color combination that also reflects the period. Find your own sayings for the embroidery, and design the quilt in a way that's uniquely your own. Putting together blocks and embroidered saying is not unique to this quilt, and was done by many quilters during the 1976 bicentennial. Everyone in your group can create a unique quilt. Or...just to make it more fun, you can have a block swap. Each of you can pick a few blocks and make enough for the whole group. Then you can put them together in your own distinct patterns. I think this would be more fun than copying a pattern in a book, and you would all have unique and personalized quilts.

This sounds like a great idea and seems like it would be a whole lot of fun!! Go for it.

Absolutely. Any copies of a pattern are a violation of copyright.

I thought it would be all right if the book is out of print.

I use a wonderful second hand book website called thriftbooks.com. It's in America or Canada, sorry can't remember which, and they always send books to me in Australia very promptly. They have a lot of quilting books.

No, whether the book is still in print or not has nothing to do with copyrights. Copyright protection lasts for 70 years after the death of the copyright holder unless the heirs renew it...in which case it lasts even longer than that.
