Border advice?
 

I made this Double Irish Chain and am hesitating on the corners. How should I finish them, mitered or plain? (What's the correct term?) Because the border is two colors, the miter has to be absolutely perfect for the points to meet cleanly, but I'll tackle it if it's the better way.

When, in general, should corners be mitered?

I plan to bind it with the green. Yes?

I would miter them. It' s not that hard, just pin the seams together so they don' t move when sewing the angle.

Since you've already assembled them, I'd miter. I glue baste mine so they don't shift at all. What I do is lay one edge down, cross the other over it, fold it under so you get a 45 degree angle, press, align and glue. Unfold it, you can also pin in place if you want that extra security, sew on the fold line.

Alternatively, you can even add a cornerstone if you decide not to miter.

I would miter them as well. When mitering corners I fold the entire quilt top on the diagonal correct. Press the fold for the borders and then pin well as Grannyrosie says. Sew. Open up the quilt to make sure your seams are correct and the miter is correct before trimming off your excess fabric.

And yes, I think binding in the green will pull that fabric more to the 'front'.

I vote for miter and the green for the binding. Beautiful quilt.

It would depend on the print of the fabric. I use to always miter my borders that were to be in competition. On the binding, I chose the fabric if I want the binding to be an accent or not.

it looks like you are all set for the miter... it would look good on this quilt. personally, i'd just bind in the brown.

I would bind it in the brown, too. You don't want to take anything away from the beautiful quilt, make it the star. Beautiful quilt, btw.

Done! Pretty good job too for a first attempt, if I do say so myself (IIDSSM). It looks perfect to me. I was super careful to end the stitching precisely at the origin of the miter.

Thanks for your kind words. According to the revised pattern, the dark brown border should have been 9.5" wide. (I changed the square size from 2" in the original design to 2.5" because the completed size was too small.) Because of my changes, the quilt was getting too big, so I opted for the borders you see. I'm leaning toward the brown binding that Nancy and Gale have recommended; the revised border is not as prominent as the wide one would have been and the dark brown is more practical for a house with two dogs.

I deliberately made this quilt understated, with muted colors. I wanted it to be useful - in the true sense of the word - and soothing.

Glad it worked out...because this is really a very pretty - and as you said "soothing" quilt....Can't imagine anyone not being pleased to have it.....and i think the brown binding is also a good idea.
