I am finishing a baby quilt with a nursery rhyme border - 6" - do the characters face inward or out? Help!

good question i will be watching i think out
|
I probably would like to have them facing in, but you can do it either way. Doesn't really matter.

I have done it both ways - depends on the pattern... KP kids I have used as out... larger wording, if the corners meet nicely, I have done in. Can you post a pic of the border fabric and maybe that will help us guide you?

Here goes with picture of both ways - this has stopped me in my tracks! Thanks for help!! I will try to attach - have never done.

I think that print looks better facing "in" -- that is an adorable border!!! Is that one of the vintage kids prints?

I would face them out. So that a baby lying on the blanket in the middle would see them right side up.
|
It's all a matter of personal preference. I prefer them facing out. But, of course, it's all up to you. Either way, I know you will be happy with the results. Cute, cute border!
|
I think I agree with them facing out so that a child on the quilt would see them right side up no matter which way they are laying. But it really is personal preference. Nice job.

Looks so lovely.

how ever you want them to face it's your project...lay them both ways and see what you like

i like the 2nd one better....
And absolutely adorable fabric!!! |
I like the top of the heads to the outside edge.If you are looking down on the baby or crib, the other way made me feel off balance.
|
My preference is 2nd picture.
|
facing out would be my choice....and yes, it is just a matter of personal preference.
I just did a quilt where I had to lay the border both ways and make a decision too. I've done them both ways and it just depends on the fabric and on your preference...as you can see, everyone will give you an opinion...lol. |
I like the second picture best.
|
I'm with the others I like the 2nd pic. The first one looks odd to me.
|
I agree with facing out. Such cute fabric!! That's going to be a darling quilt :)
|
The rule on setting border characters facing in or out is that there is no rule.
I've done both, but based on your cute fabric, for this case I would probably have them look in (like in second picture). Either way, it's a darling quilt! |
This is going to be a darling quilt. Please be sure to post picture when it's finished! ( I like the 2nd picture, too!)
Just don't over-think it...lovely either way...just get 'er done! |
yep, in looks great.
|
Most people are liking them facing in, but I prefer them facing out (as in the top picture) so that everyone else looking at the quilt will see them right side up. If you face them so the baby can see them, then they will be upside down to everyone else.
It is totally personal preference and will look beautiful no matter which way you choose to do it. :) |
ok, dumb question, I like it what I thought was "facing in" -- with the kids in the border's feet being against the quilt, why would that be called "facing out" like everyone else said?
The second picture... that just "looks right"... is that called facing "in" or "out"? |
Which ever way you like the best :D:D:D
I like the 2nd picture best |
To me the first pic is facing in. Their faces are closer "in" to the quilt center. Second pic is facing out. Their faces are looking "out" from the quilt. I prefer the 2nd pic.
|
Also in the first pic, it looks to me like they're standing on their heads.
|
It's a matter of choice. I prefer them facing in. I feel it draws the eye into the center.
|
Speaking as an old newspaper, yearbook, and magazine layout person, pictures always faced to the center of the page, never to the outside.
Not sure if that rule goes for quilts....as if quilts have rules!!!! But I would have them face inside. When the baby is lying on the blanket, they would be looking at the baby. I like that image. :) |
I like facing in. But a child sure wouldn't care either way!
|
2nd photon is my favorite.
|
I like the second picture, too. The first one makes me feel like I have to tilt my head.

I like inward.
|
I usually fce them outwardly so that they are easily recognised by the viewer. If you think the child's view is more important, face them inwardly so that you can discuss the characters with them as they progress.
|
Facing in ---- but, go with your gut
|
facing in looks great. either is good but I like the 2nd
