borders
Hi everyone...........I need to put a narrow strip on my quilt before the border goes on. I know the border should not be pieced but can the 1" strip be? I don't want to buy 3 yards of batik to get a couple of 1" strips.............
|
Oh yes, it can be pieced. :) Can we see pictures of your progress-??
|
I piece borders all the time...not everyone can buy the yardage required to eliminate seams.
|
I've seldom put on any border that was not pieced.
|
Unless it's a small quilt my borders are pieced...always!
|
Me too......I always piece my borders.

What about a flange? Lot's of tutorials on a flange. Jenny Doan has one.http://bit.ly/babyquiltwithflangebinding

Piecing is just fine!
|
The only time that borders really shouldn't be pieced is when it is going in for competition. You can piece any border you like. Some attached the pieces together on an angle or some just do a straight seam. No regulation that I know of and I have been quilting since the mid 80s.
|
I always piece my boarders unless it is a wall hanging and I don't have to.
|
A long time ago, ladies did with what they had. I have pieced border before and they came out just fine. No one should have to buy a large amount of fabric to just get some strips.
|
I never thought about not piecing my borders.

thanks for the reply's..........the border will be approx. 5 inchs wide so I don't want to piece that. Its all batiks and my first attempt at a Bargello so I want it to turn out nice. I wish I could figure out how to attach a picture

I do not piece my borders. Also I sew the outside large borders strips together end to end and not on the diagonal. That wastes a lot of fabric and you can not tells how the borders are sewn after the quilt is quilted. I do however sew my inner smaller inner borders diagonally.! have tried sewing the outer borders on the LOF and actually saw no difference. By sewing them that way the outer border is not supposed to be wavy.
remember- there are no quilt police!!!!!!! |

I piece the narrow borders often. Using bias seams in your joins gives a nice finished look.

I always piece my borders and backings too for that matter.

Borders are almost pieced in quilts larger than 40 inches. Most patterns call for borders cut on the crosswise grain which means they have to be pieces. I personally like to cut lengthwise borders on the lengthwise grain and crosswise borders on the crosswise grain. This means that I cut the borders first-of course, they are a bit longer than estimated-just to be sure. I use a diagonal seam and match the pattern whenever possible because I like it to not be obvious. By the time I quilt it, the seam is absolutely gone and I haven't spent a fortune for unneeded yardage.

I always piece my borders! I love how my quilts look though I am not someone that competes.
|
I have to laugh. This is not what I expected when I opened this thread. I have a book of blocks and borders that are all pieced. Not just to make a length of fabric long enough to go around but to add to the design of the quilt. I love the book and the designs. Even though it means adding a hundred or more pieces of fabric to the piecing process.
So of course I really piece borders. Do whatever makes you happy. |
This is the post I just put on the "sashing" question today:
One thing not mentioned so far: if you have to put a seam where there shouldn't be one, be sure and press the seam open. Seems like a little thing, but a seam pressed to one side has a little bump. When it's open, it's almost invisible. This is true for borders, too. And if you have to add a little piece to any parts of your blocks, open seams are hard to find, even if you know they are there. |
Yes, I piece my borders, but each of the 4 borders are pieced in the same spot
|
I piece borders or not, depending on design and fabric availability.
You mentioned putting the narrow border on before the final one -- just a thought, but have you considered sewing the two borders together, then sewing the newly completed two-piece border onto the quilt. It makes like easier for me. Whenever I have multiple borders, I sew them together THEN attached them to the quilt. This works with both straight set and mitered borders. |
You can do whatever you want with your quilt! I promise the quilt police will not show up and scold you.
|
I always piece borders. Not about to waste yardage on most quilts.
