Yesterday I bought some Christmas fabric at Walmart (great sales!!). I'm planning to use it for a bow tuck. I've never made one before, but I'm SO nervous. I keep think I'll start it, then I think no. lol Need some cheerleaders!!!

Up North 01-05-2011 08:48 AM

Don't be nervous just follow the steps and ask questions when you run into one!

Here is the tute I used and there is one someone did on the board too.

Please send some cheerleaders my way. I have had the pattern and then I found another pattern just like it. Now I have 2 of the bow tucks purse and can't get the nerve up to make one....what a wimp I am.....come on cheerleaders. I even live with a high school cheerleader and would give her the purse, but she doesn't cheer for me.....oh well...someday

erstan947 01-05-2011 08:50 AM

Just follow each step. I usually cut it all one day and then sew it another day. If you get stumped just post a question or check out the "Search" for help. Once you do the first one you will realize that there is nothing to it!:)

MommaDorian 01-05-2011 08:53 AM

My first question...do I have to quilt the fabric? Or can I use it as is?

Holly 01-05-2011 08:55 AM

I am a beginner sewer and mine turned out great!! I cut it out one night and then sewed it together the next day!! It took me awhile, but not forever!! Just do it and enjoy it if you mess up then rip it out and try again!! LET"S GO GIRLS YOU CAN DO IT!!! HOORAY!! LOL

I can totally relate, life gets in the way. :)

JulieR 01-05-2011 09:18 AM

You can do it! I did my first about a month ago and now I don't want to stop. You can do pretty much whatever you want with the quilting. Just look at the pattern of the material and go with whatever you're feeling.

And like Holly, I've had to do a fair share of stitch ripping myself. Big woo! what's the worst that can happen, you have to use different fabric? SHOPPING! :)

That's one thing I thought about too. One of the reasons I bought fabric for 86 cents/yd. :)

BMP 01-05-2011 09:33 AM

I have had the pattern and supplies for almost 2 months and havent dared yet either ...

Up North 01-05-2011 09:39 AM

Ok I challenge you to do it! I promise you will do more than one!!

littlehud 01-05-2011 09:41 AM

It took me forever to start mine. But it wasn't nearly as difficult as I thought. Once you make one you wonder why you didn't start earlier.

blzzrdqueen 01-05-2011 09:43 AM

I was really nervous about making my first one too, but when all was said and done, it really was not hard at all. There is a tutorial in the tutorial section that has pics and the explanation is great. I'm working on my 2nd bow tuck now so I can sell it:)

Raggiemom 01-05-2011 10:26 AM

I had mine for months before I figured it out. I was stuck on one of the first few steps, don't even remember what one. Then one day when I was looking at it, it dawned on me what to do. I did have to go to my LQS at the end and they helped guide me through the last step or two but it wasn't nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. I just bought the mini bow tucks pattern and material for it. However, I MUST finish some UFOs before I start on it!

You CAN do it! And remember, the seam ripper is your friend.

BMP 01-05-2011 10:41 AM

I cheated the other day and bought a Vera Bradley it was on sale online and I couldnt have made it for the price I got it for, I am still going to master the Bow Tuck ...

featherweight 01-05-2011 11:07 AM

There are billions of pictures on the board for this
bag. I think everybody and there brother have made one!!!

0tis 01-05-2011 11:13 AM

I'm with you on that - I have the pattern sitting in front of me - I am contemplating one today - I am nervous too - but with the tutorial on here I think I can do it. I know you can too.

AnnieH 01-05-2011 11:21 AM

I had to send to the US for a pattern and it's on its way. Go girl. Hope you enjoy the making. It's such a pretty pattern.
Good luck from across the pond.
Annie

Rah Rah Ree! Let's go! You can do it! I've been wanting to do one too but feel much like you so you go first and tell me how it was ;)

I quilted the pices after they were cut, with FMQ.

emsunfire 01-05-2011 01:23 PM

I've made 4 and haven't quilted any of them. It is a great purse that everyone loves. I have 2, I made one for my
Dad's 84 yr old girlfriend and my 25 yr old daughter in law. Everyone loves it. Go For it it really is easy and feel free to contact me if you need help. Paula

MommaDorian 01-05-2011 02:30 PM

Ok, I'm going for it!! I have it cut out, except for some of the fusible fleece that I ran out of. I'll go as far as I can without it, then get some more when I'm at Walmart next.

I'll do some 'in progress' pictures. :)

Thanks for everyone's support.

Cyn 01-05-2011 03:09 PM

I'm watching you for inspiration :)
no pressure ;)

Question #1:

Step #1 - It says to sew the front pocket piece to the front pocket lining piece, along the 8 1/2" length (pocket is 8 1/2" wide).

Someone explain this to me. :) I looked at the picture tutorial, but she already has this step done and didn't include anything except pictures.

TIA

good question! Answers ?

emsunfire 01-05-2011 03:55 PM

you are sewing it the width (8 1/2"), the lining piece is actually longer in lenght than the pocket piece. After you sew that seam together you will press your your seam then treat that piece as if it is one piece and fold it in half. you will see that the lining piece now forms the trim band at the top of your pocket. I hope that helps.

QuiltingHiker 01-05-2011 04:11 PM

It is all straight stitching. Just follow the directions and you'll do fine.

BTW, I am doing a class on this purse at my house on the 19th, if you would like to join us here in Jacksonville, FL. :-D

hperttula123 01-05-2011 04:25 PM

You will be surprised...they are easier than it looks. Just make one and you'll see. I bet you can't make just one!!!

It's a deal. I'll be there. I'll bet the weather is better there than here. lol

Ok, I started mine today - I am still doing all the quilting after I finish that I think it will work up quickly. The tutorial on this site saved me - otherwise I would still be staring at the directions - trying to make heads or tails of it. Will take some pics when I get done.

I found the tutorial confusing. She shows the completed steps, but not how she got to it.

PM me I will take you one step at a time if you wish.

After you make the first one it is a breeze. They are fun to make and you can do so many different things with them. My bow tuck bags are the ones I get the most compliments on. I'm working on one right now. I decided to add a little pocket on both ends maybe for cell phones, pens & pencils, umbrella, etc. Good luck!!

steelecg 01-06-2011 06:04 AM

you can do it - just read directions and work slowly -

qwkslver 01-06-2011 06:23 AM

You can do it (I sound like Tony Little). I was scared too. My husband was my cheerleader. I have made several since.

foxxigrani 01-06-2011 06:52 AM

Ok I have wanted to do one too as I have seen some fantastice purses here made by you all. But I am not a sewer so am scared, heck I can't even sew a button on nice.
