I have a question! I made my first bow tucks bag, sorry no pics camera batteries went dead, when you pull the bag thru the 8 inch opening in lining my directions say nothing about closing it up, just make the bottom sleeve and put in, it just seems weird not to do something with that hole. Please tell me what u all have done with it. I know it gets covered with the bottom piece but it just does not seem right to leave it opened. Thank u all in advance, this is a great bunch of talented people and I love reading and seeing everything everyone does. :-D

I would just hand stitch the opening closed :D:D:D

nursie76 10-23-2010 03:57 PM

I have either hand slip stitched it closed or used my machine on the verrry edge.

M. Wills 10-23-2010 04:03 PM

I sewed the edge on my machine.

bjnicholson 10-23-2010 04:08 PM

I folded the edges in and tucked it in so they just met.

Up North 10-23-2010 04:28 PM

I machine stitch mine closed.

tlrnhi 10-23-2010 06:36 PM

I wrote to the pattern maker about that and haven't heard back.
I just slip stitch it closed

tjradj 10-23-2010 07:01 PM

I pull it up a bit and machine stitch it closed, then push it back down into the bag.

I hand stitch mine. I just can't bring myself to leave it open.

wvdek 10-23-2010 08:22 PM

As long as the bottom is washable, stitch her up!
If not, stitch the opening closed and place the bottom in a sleeve and place in bottom of bag.

Moon Holiday 10-24-2010 02:09 AM

I always stitch mine closed.

knlsmith 10-24-2010 02:25 AM

I don't turn mine through the bottom. Instead, I leave my opening between the handles on the side withOUT the button strap. That way it is all pretty and no one can ever tell where it was turned and closed up.

ModieMo 10-24-2010 03:09 AM

Thank U All!!! What I thought too!!

same here, it's pretty neat that way

topper1 10-24-2010 04:11 AM

just use scant seam , close by machine, my instructions were the same

Suzy 10-24-2010 04:20 AM

Depending on what you used in the bottom, such as cardboard or something you can just leave it as is and remove it to wash the purse when needed. That is what I sometimes do. Even if I use plastic canvas I remove it to wash the item.

matraina 10-24-2010 05:35 AM

I always hand stitch the opening closed.

lawsonmugs 10-24-2010 06:05 AM

I have made 7 bow tucks so far,I fold in the edge to match the rest of the seam and just as close to the edge as I can I sew it closed. Also I put plastic canvas for the bottom to be stiff and hold it's shape. I use 2 pieces and make the pillow case type sleeve for it.fold in the overhang between the 2 pieces of canvas. you can hand stitch it closed or just leave it inside. Cost of 2 pieces cut from 1 sheet of canvas is less than 50 cents. and is washable. Mary

I am working on my 15th Bow Tucks and I leave the bottoms open!!!! My understanding is if you wash it later, you can get to the corners (through the opening) to "poke out the corners".....it made sense to me!!! Patti

lawsonmugs 10-24-2010 08:28 AM

humm I didn't think about poking them out again after washing. good idea to leave at least a little space open. thanks. Mary

lawsonmugs 10-24-2010 08:30 AM

Don't ya just love these totes. all the different looks just using different fabrics. They are very popular. thanks Patti for the reminder. Mary

katlady 10-24-2010 08:58 AM

Hand stitch it closed then put in the bottom piece.

Debbie B 10-24-2010 09:05 AM

I recently made a bow tucks and wondered about the same thing. I decided to close mine, because I know how loose change can find its way under the bottom & I didn't want it to get in between the lining & the outside fabric.

The pitz 10-24-2010 09:53 AM

I made a covered hard board bottom to put inside to make the bottom stable. I put that inside the open hole
and then just hand stitched it closed. It doesn't have to
be perfect. No one sees it anyway. I just didn't want
raw edges fraying in there. You could also glue it shut.

IBQLTN 10-24-2010 10:34 AM

Stitch it by machine.

obie2 10-24-2010 01:43 PM

I hand stitched mine close too.

I found mine on ebay, but Connecting Threads has them also. Some one also posted them for sale today. Check under search and you will find it.

Diddo. I only left the lining open and pulled it together and stitched with machine. It leaves a small "incision" but looks great in the bottom of the bag.

You cannot get the pattern for free. You have to purchase it.

I would love to see them all. Everyone is so different and I love to see the different fabrics everyone uses.
