I machine sew mine shut with just a small seam. It's covered anyway so doesn't matter so much.

I sew it shut by hand. I love hand sewing on my projects. Machine is faster, but sometimes by hand is more soul satisfying.

I sewed it by machine then covered it with the bottom board.

I did mine by hand. Easy peasy.
