I hate it when that happens.

I stopped using Coats & Clark poly, cotton AND embroidery thread. My Brother machines HATE it. I use Mettler and Gutterrman, too. My Brothers will tolerate BROTHER thread but I don't buy much of it.

I wonder if i can change this post topic to What thread do YOU USE??? haha. Thank you for the input! I feel like a beginner... Goodness!

Actually if you use the search at the top of the page, you will find lots of topics about threads. It is better to use a good quality thread for quilting. My new favorite is Aurifil, especially for piecing. It's a great thread, but expensive. I love the Superior threads King Tut Variegated threads for quilting the top and usually then use either an Aurifil, or Essential Thread in the bobbin.

I have a machine that expects thread to be 'manhandled'.! I would rather use Gutterman! Have you tried it?

Are you using an older spool of Coats & Clark, the style with the ridges around the edges? If so, that can be part of the problem. If you do use them, they work better in my Sapphire if I keep them horizontal and use the larger donut shaped thing to hold the thread on. It directs the thread away from the edges. Also, remember on some of the Vikings that there are 4 heights to the presser foot and if you don't have it all the way up when pulling the thread out, that thread will not move!

What size needle are you using? I have good luck with a 14 using that brand of thread. If you find that your machine just doesn't like it, try Aurifil. Mine loves Aurifil!

when i bought my Viking i was told at the Dealers shop to not use Coats and Clark thread- the machines do not like it-
so---my advice is change thread.
i have found my viking to be quite picky when it comes to threads-
some work wonderfully- others are nothing but frustration-
when ever i get a new thread- when i start having breakage problems- and i know i've changed the needle recently the next step is to try a different thread...i was very upset one time when i had spent $18 on a thread- only to get it home and find that machine will not allow it! so it's not just C&C threads it doesn't like.
but C&C threads are definite frustration every time...(not all C&C thread-only the basic sewing threads & dual duty are the ones my Viking will not tolerate...so, try a different thread- i bet your troubles disappear

I tried using Coats & Clark in my Viking Quilt Designer last week to practice FMQ and the tread kept shredding and breaking. I changed to a different thread and all is well. I am now using Marathon thread.

I discovered that my Vikings do not like cc thread! I use Gutterman or if I am embroidering, sulky. Gave away all my cc because there was no sense keeping it when my machine wouldn't tolerate it!
