Broken Quilt...Ideas?

4 Attachment(s)
I made this quilt years ago for my little sister. Who happened to have a fabric eating dog at some point :)
I'm looking for bright ideas for a fix. I'm not looking for heirloom restoration, I only have one of the fabrics still in my stash.

I used warm and natural batting so the quilt is stable.
It is a double sided quilt, the other side is pink and teal and sage.

I know many heads have to be better than mine alone, thanks so much!

cjsews 11-20-2012 08:08 AM

All I can say is WOW - that was one hungry dog.

DOTTYMO 11-20-2012 08:13 AM

How about photocopying the material and make another block. Or photocopy same block elsewhere and replace as whole. Just an idea.

SouthPStitches 11-20-2012 08:17 AM

I wouldn't know where to start. It's so beautiful and intricate. If the blocks weren't set on point, I'd suggest cutting it down for a lap and cover the smaller missing chunks with applique. Did all the cotton manage to pass through the dog's intestines? I'm sorry, this must be heart breaking for you.

fayzer 11-20-2012 08:17 AM

That quilt is so beautiful, that I would be sick. Maybe people on this board have bits and pieces of the fabric you need. I think I have a FQ of the gold. If not exact, it is close. I would send it to you if you like. I would be tempted to applique a dog shape on the large hole!

feline fanatic 11-20-2012 08:24 AM

Oh no, how absolutely heartbreaking for both you and your sister (assuming of course your sister was quiltworthy and really cared about it in the first place). If this quilt were mine I would be furious with my dog if it had ruined such a beautiful quilt as this and she would immediatly be relegated back to crate training when I was not around to keep an eye on her and at night. And belive me I love my dog dearly but destroying such a beautiful quilt would definitely lose her all her free house roaming priviledges.

Is an entire corner missing? I can't think of any fix other than to cut off the bottom row and a half of blocks and bottom border where the entire corner looks to be missing. You could then unpick the quilting and use the fabric from the cut off borders that is still intact to remake the border and repair the bit at the top. You then would have portions of undamaged blocks that you could applique right over the damaged ones.

If you want to maintain the size, I am afraid any fix you do will look like repair patches, especially the entire missing corner, even if you could somewhat match the fabrics. You could probably find a nice compliment to applique something over the center areas but that missing corner where you had mitered the border print... There is not much you can do.

Peckish 11-20-2012 08:36 AM

Wow. My thinking - turn the quilt into a square quilt. Remove that lower part with the missing corner and huge hole, and use the extra fabrics from that section to repair/patch the other holes.

Good luck!! I live in Vancouver and I'd come help you, but we've never met....

KalamaQuilts 11-20-2012 08:38 AM

When she told me about it I thought easy peasy, cut it down and make a couch throw, but because the damage is on both sides it would be far too narrow to be of use.

No, I wasn't heartbroken. And she was worth it. A dog shaped applique makes me laugh, thanks!
thanks to all for your thoughts!

feline, only where the pink stickynotes is where the damage is.
That bit in the lower corner is the quilt I just finished quilting yesterday. Nice spot though, you are right, it looks like even worse damage ;)

barking-rabbit 11-20-2012 08:48 AM

The edge I would trim and bind as is, oddly shaped. The large one, a dog shape appliqué as a silhouette. Photo copy on a good copier isn't a bad idea. A label appliqué telling the story in a color that blended.
The things we endure for our pets. Now I understand better why my mil asked that my kids sun bonnet sue quilts not be used, because of my cats. They are hand quilted. I wish she had made wall hanging size.

SHELTIE'SMAMA 11-20-2012 09:07 AM

If you go for the dog shape applique how about in a blending color and a la quilt labels the info on how the hole/applique got there. The smaller holes might be covered with a blending dog bone shaped bone.

Hey...that was my idea too! Great minds thinking again!! Did you put a label on it at all? You could add one there!

gramajo 11-20-2012 09:43 AM

I LOVE the idea of a dog shaped applique. I'd find fabric that matched the coloring of the dog to use. Dog bones over the smaller spots would be great. And, even if there was a label on the quilt originally, I'd put another one on explaining the dog appliques.

I know it's disappoionting/discouraging to have something you've labored over be damaged. at this point, I'd celebrate it and make the repairs a prominent part of the quilt.

JudyTheSewer 11-20-2012 10:18 AM

I have a feeling this quilt will become more cherished once the repairs are made. It will be a contemporary quilt with a real story - wonderful! I like the ideas everyone came up with for applique and a new label.

Yosamitesa 11-20-2012 11:00 AM

Great minds think alike!!! I was gonna say a doggie applique with dog bones, a dog house or even a fire hydrant to repair the holes. Sorry, I giggled when I read what happened. :)

Tartan 11-20-2012 11:05 AM

Since quite a large piece is missing, how about doing a black brick pattern in those areas. Make it kind of look like the quilt is emerging from the wall? The big dog appliqué would be fun fix also.

bearisgray 11-20-2012 11:15 AM

1) Does she still have that dog that chewed up the quilt?

2) You could go on www.missingfabrics.com or the classifieds here to see if anyone might still have some of those fabrics in their stashed.

3) Oy. My. Goodness. Bad doggie.

jcrow 11-20-2012 11:52 AM

Hey, that looks like what my dog does to our regular blankets!!! I keep my quilts away from him. He's a bad boy.

KalamaQuilts 11-20-2012 01:26 PM

Some dogs are fabric junkies. Who are we to cast stones ;)

I found a cute dog bones print with a brown background so got an 1/8 yard. I love that idea. I'll use to for the binding area and the smallest hole. I quit buying fabric in 2001. today doesn't count~!

There is a lot of history with this quilt. I made it after I quit buying fabric, entirely from my stash. The first of many,
It was my first double sided quilt, all have been dual sided since then.
It was also the first time I had the aid of a full size working wall. This quilt would have been zip all without all the 'on the wall, thinking' time

and my baby sister, who owned it passed away this summer so it is a special repair job.
thank you all for the ideas!

bearisgray 11-20-2012 04:46 PM

Oh - there is more to the story - maybe applique replicas of things that were meaningful to the two of you all over the quilt?- which was spectacular, by the way

So that the quilt will just become one big background -

My condolences on the loss of your sister.

patchsamkim 11-20-2012 06:27 PM

Not having the same fabrics to repair, I think applique would be the way to fix it...whether you do a dog :) or some stylish floral design. The back of the quilt you could just patch however you would need to fix it. Be creative...it may make the quilt even more beautiful!

AnnT 11-21-2012 03:53 AM

What a beautiful quilt. I can't offer any repair suggestions but like the dog applique and explanation.

rj.neihart 11-21-2012 05:39 AM

I ran into the same thing a couple of months ago. I didn't have any of the stash left from 10 years ago, so I matched the colors as close as I could. I first trimmed the area, then put the new small piece onto the hole (after placing a small piece of batting into the hole, and hand stitched the spot. She couldn't tell where - but I could! Her animal ate all the way through, so I had to replace the entire back. I then quilted it on the machine. It took me a couple of weeks, all holes are now filled and she's one warm happy camper once again!

AZ Jane 11-21-2012 05:46 AM

Love the dog appliqué idea!

gollytwo 11-21-2012 05:47 AM

Use your printer: I would xerox the fabric you need to replace onto printer-ready fabric and go from there.

Just saw the dog applique idea - a wonderful solution and less trouble.

Amythyst02 11-21-2012 06:09 AM

I am amazed at the amount of damage the dog did to that quilt. Quite heartbreaking, as it is very lovely. I have no idea for a fix, but all these ladies here will come up with the perfect solution I am sure.

bakermom 11-21-2012 06:15 AM

Do you have pictures of you sister and her dog? Print them on fabric and use them to patch the holes. Maybe fix the border with a wrap-around label.

KalamaQuilts 11-21-2012 06:22 AM

the idea of photocopying a block and then printing the image on fabric is brilliant, thank you all for that idea.

I'm going with the dog shape for the big hole, I'll make two, one a reverse image to put on the reverse side.
I'm plowing into Bonnie Hunters mystery Friday, but when I get the applique's finished I'll come back with photos!
Thanks again to everyone who posted!

I'll use a doxy shape...long dog for a long hole. I have two that are my delight and cross in life.

Peckish, I don't get down to Vancouver very often, because I seldom have a reason...you could be a reason if you'd like to have coffee one day. I'll bet we have other nearby members...

rosiewell 11-21-2012 07:12 AM

very distressing! I would applique the missing pieces at least where the hole is not too big. I fixed a quilt for a friend that way, it came out OK if you did not look too closely!

lillybeck 11-21-2012 07:29 AM

How about cutting it down on the sides right through the middle of your side squares and putting a large binding on it. The small hole could be patched with a heart appilque

I was thinking the same type of thing. Children's coloring books might have a good pattern, perhaps a naughty puppy chewing on something.

A naughty puppy chewing on something would be adorable!

RugosaB 11-21-2012 07:44 AM

I have one of those!
I have no suggestions because I'm still thinking about how I'm going to fix mine. Will look forward to reading the responses
My story:
I have a basenji that we call 'the problem child we never had.' I'm not much of a hand quilter but I thought I'd try my hand at a Hawaiian wallhanging, after a trip to Ha.
Lots of hand quilting, hung on the wall. It looked nice.
This particular 13 yr old dog, without getting into the whole long, destruction through the yeas story, decided to get this wallhanging off the wall and chew holes in it. I guess I should tell you the dog is 16 inches at the shoulder, and the wall hanging was a good 4 ft off the floor.
Life with Ibis, over the years, was never boring. I like to think no one else would put up with her over the years, and she owes me her life, as I suspect anyone else would have shot her!

(Oh, I just have to add, she ripped a 4' by 22' section of vinyl siding off of our house.)

I'm unsure whether it is ok to post something I did not make, and really have no idea who did (I guess it could be someone here?) but I always thought this would be so appropriate, changing the bunny to a basenji
(mods, please remove, as I know you will, if this is not allowed)

Kitsie 11-21-2012 08:33 AM

Whatever you do, please update us with a picture when its "fixed"!

Iraxy 11-21-2012 08:34 AM

Great ideas. Would you please let us see what you decided and what you did? It would be a great follow up. Thanks for posting. We learn from each other.

MimiBug123 11-21-2012 08:43 AM

I love the applique dog with bones idea. That would be hilarious and add some whimsy to the quilt.

Material Witness 11-21-2012 03:38 PM

I'm with Fayzer. Applique a dog shape onto it. I'm sure your sister liked that dog.

alfosa421 11-21-2012 05:08 PM

I like Dottymo's idea.In this day and age you could easily reproduce small portions of you. BLocks to do the repair with.good luck

Normabeth 11-21-2012 07:47 PM

what a shame!! If my dog did this, he would be in his kennel for LIVE!!!!

That bunny running off with the quilt block is great, thank you for sharing that RugosaB, and I can sympathize with your doggie, our doxies were puppymill dogs, adults when we got them. Every day is an adventure, but every day they do something to make me really proud of them.

lilybeck, cutting off the broken parts and making it a couch throw was my first idea when I heard about the damage, but ether way you'd cut it, it would leave a narrow odd thing with no useful life left in it.

I'd be very happy if anyone else that has broken quilts wanted to post them here for ideas.
And I surely will update with photos when it's repaired.
