I decided to make a few for my niece. I am not sure if to add some thin batting or another layer of flannel or not add anything. I am using a heavier weight flannel for both sides

Dianemarie 08-26-2011 01:21 PM

I only use onside cotton fabric and the other flannel. Your choice - others on QB have other suggestions as you will soon hear.

Thats what is so great about this board.

harrold48 08-26-2011 01:35 PM

I am making some for next grand child....cotton material on front and flannel on back

no1jan 08-26-2011 02:06 PM

I have a new grandson that I plan on babysitting next weekend. This is a great idea to make before seeing him.

Thanks.

yayaquilts 08-26-2011 02:07 PM

I only use two flannels no batting when making burp cloths.

KS quilter 08-26-2011 03:15 PM

What size do you make them?

SMR 08-26-2011 03:21 PM

I use flannel only. I also shape them wider on ends witnarower middle so they stay on shoulder better. I have used cottons but flannel more absorbent. Niece recently got some made from polar fleece which while soft don't absorb anything.

suern3 08-26-2011 03:27 PM

I have seen some in LQS that use just two layers of flannel. They feel really soft and I bet they are absorbent. I have been making burp clothes using flannel on one side and a prefolded diaper on the other. I make a matching receiving blanket of two pieces of flannel and I think it makes a nice gift. The pattern is on a site called You Can Sew This. A free pattern.

blossom808 08-26-2011 03:31 PM

They are fun to make, I use cotton and flannel on back too. Plus I do a embroidery on front side.

redquilter 08-26-2011 04:51 PM

I use 2 layers of flannel (2 different ones to give it interest and make it reversible) Been doing them like that for years and have gotten rave reviews from the moms. They are very soft and very absorbent.

BMP 08-26-2011 04:57 PM

I just did one with some very thin batting and will do a 2nd without the batting...thanks for the replies

Lady Crafter 08-26-2011 05:03 PM

I made sets of bibs and burpers for several years for craft fairs. I used flannel on one side, cotton fabric on the other and a thin batting in between ... for both the bib and burper. Top stitched when done to anchor the batting. I sold them by the hundreds!

Bueniebabe 08-26-2011 05:03 PM

I use themo line plus interfacing. It is a thicker interfacing and softer. It's thick enough that it soaks stuff up better. I also use it in bibs.

Hi Bonnie, I have made literally dozens of burp cloths. I use 2 layers of flannel....I like nice heavier weight of soft flannel. I make mine pillowcase style and add a border of a cute baby print to the bottom for some style and color.
Mom's seem to love them as they always request additional burps!

A burpcloth for a little boy, done in applique style. I try to match the print to the applque.

Obviously for a little girl with a cute flirty ruffle attached!

More embroidered burps with 2 soft flannel washcloths added to the package.

No filler needed!

GreatStarter 08-26-2011 06:11 PM

I make burb clothes with two different coordinated flannels and a thin layer of cotton batting. Everyone I have given them to rave about them.

I just use two layer of flannel. everbody that I have gaven them to have real happy with them.

davis2se 08-27-2011 03:00 AM

Sheriann - your burp cloths are adorable. I had already planned to spend today making a bunch for my daughter to give to several friends who have recently become parents. The envelope method, and ruffles - love those ideas. Thanks!!!!!

I made some with the polar fleece but just on the backing with flannel on top.....they seem to keep spit up from coming through. Just a thought......Jan

I make burp cloths using bought diapers. Add fabric trim to each end and you have a great burp cloth. If you have an embroidery machine, embroider something to match the fabric trim. My nieces love them.

darlenedowns 08-27-2011 04:48 AM

Just wanted to give you another ideal
I bought a 12 pack of birds-eye prefolded diapers
and make burp cloths out of Just trimmed
them out .

QUILTNMO 08-27-2011 04:58 AM

i just sew 2 pieces of flannel sewn right sides togather turn and sew all arounf no batting

Victoria L 08-27-2011 05:45 AM

I use cloth diapers and add flannel to the one side. Layer the flannel and diaper together, sew around all sides leaving a section open to turn inside out and slip stich the opening. My friends love them. The flannel helps to keep them from slipping off the shoulder.

Are their directions for "Burp Cloths"?

I like these too.. My daughter in-law recieved a set of these and we used them hard ! The prefolder diaper was thick enough to keep it all on the cloth ! hah!

Beautiful examples here ! Thanks for posting.

Your stuff is sooo cute and I know a bunch of people, including my BFF, that are pregnant. Can you share what you mean by pillow case style?

thanks

I use flannel on each side - so it can be used more than once if need be - and also used a very thin batting - made it a bit more absorbent; my neice loved those with the batting moreso than just two layers of flannel... and I also did a little "quilting" to make it stay in place plus it gave it a bit of stability when put over your shoulder.

PolkaBabe 08-27-2011 07:03 AM

I have used only flannel & on both sides. Also the ones I make were in the shape of a peanut, less bulk that way.

cherrio 08-27-2011 07:36 AM

I use cloth diapers and "decorate" them with a 4 inch x width of diaper fabric that matches the quilt I made mom; or just cute fabric-flannel

gump51 08-27-2011 08:00 AM

I also made what I call a "cuddle" cloth which is the same as a burp cloth only one side is minky material. That way when little one is just nestled in on your shoulder to be put to sleep it's nice and soft. Not to mention who wants to wake a sleeping baby when they are on grandma's shoulder!!! Plus it isn't as irritating on those sweet little cheeks.

tjradj 08-27-2011 08:15 AM

I have raids my child, and been there for many nieces and nephews and even burped some of my siblings. I guess I just don't "get it." I don't understand why I would put so much effort (and cost) into something that is just going to get puked on and washed a million times. I just used the receiving blankets that I got as gifts - you know the ones that are too small to wrap a baby in? They're usually of a busy enough print that stains don't show.
My concern if they're made of too many layers is, that they would take forever to dry in the dryer or on the line.
But maybe I'm just not "fashionable."

Jeandrig 08-27-2011 08:46 AM

I use the Birdseye diapers found at walmarts and embroidered on them.

MargeD 08-27-2011 09:27 AM

The burp cloths I recently made for a friend, just had 2 layers of fabric, no batting, no flannel, although flannel would be a good choice to instead of two layers of cotton fabric.

pkelly1947 08-27-2011 11:06 AM

I made several for my GD, born in March. I used a diaper for the filler. I brought them at Target, used cotton on the front & terry cloth or flannel on the back. They wash great & are absorbent

QuiltnLady1 08-27-2011 11:07 AM

I do flannel on both sides -- I make them out of fat quarters and the Mom's love them.

cheesecat 08-27-2011 02:56 PM

Hi, when I make burp cloths I use flannel on one side and terrycloth on the reverse, prewash both before cutting and sewing. Sew right sides together, turn and sew around near the edge all the way around, then there is no need to sew the turning area closed seperately.

SUZAG 08-27-2011 03:04 PM

I sometimes use terry (buy a cheap towel) on one side and pre-washed flannel on the other. Nice and absorbent.
