Ok... over the past year I have been home again with your two youngest. We've had a rough year and I knew I'd need to work somehow, but really feel it's time for me to stay home. I was going to sub again this year in a private school where I taught about 15 years ago. Then two parents asked me to tutor/teach their children along with mine. Not as good of an income as subbing but it's steady and it's income we can count on. PLUS, it allows me to be home. I can still sew because the children are all old enough to do alot of their work on their own after I show them how. I am getting the embroidery machine in two weeks and am hoping that will bring in more requests also. I am looking to get my business license but need a name - can you all help? A cousin of mine who just began selling quilts suggested Candy Corn Quilts - as it brings to mind fall, smells, colors and she figured the colors would be great. I agree but I live in FL where there is no fall. Yes, I can do this on Etsy but... I'll need to be local too. I live about five miles from the ocean, I love fall, I want this to include quilting, embroidery, and other sewing items. I thought about a name with gifts in it... then I can be varied. Handmade Gifts and then have the three words Quilting * Embroidery * Sewing underneath?Something like that - any suggestions?

I am not creative in the way with words. I wish you all success in your endeavor. Good for you staying home with the children. I was able to do the for the most part and I consider it a true blessing that I could.

I don't know about the requirements in your state, but I think you have to have a unique name that no one else has registered. So in that case you might want a name like my friend has for her shop...Miss Stanley's Creation Station. She is a retired teacher and has a small teacher supply shop with a large area in another section for doing all sorts of creative things...bulletin boards, scrapbooking, die cut shapes, etc. My MIL used to have a used book shop named Lola's Pearls of Wisdom.

How about Q.E.S. Handmade Gifts? Letter head could be large capital letters, followed by smaller letters to read

Quilted Embroidered Sewn
Handmade Gifts

Prism99 09-06-2010 06:34 PM

I don't like the Candy Corn Quilts name -- too limiting in terms of the picture it conjures. I do like your idea of putting Quilting *Embroidery* Sewing underneath. Your idea of Handmade Gifts may be the best. Here are the few variations I could think of:

Handmade Gifts from the Heart
Rainbow Gifts
Over-the-Rainbow Gifts

Like the thoughts here so far - thanks.

How about:

Mom's Heartfelt Handicrafts
Specializing in
Quilting * Embroidery * Sewing

Qbee 09-06-2010 06:56 PM

I would definately do the Quilting*Embroidery*Sewing under it. Here is what my daughter and I thought of:
White Sands Gifts
Sunset Gifts
Colorful Collections or Collectables
Beautiful Bounty
Sorry....that's all I've got...LOL :)

bearisgray 09-06-2010 07:01 PM

I think I would avoid using "handmade" in the title.

Maybe use one of the following instead: custom - specialty - unique -

Is this to be a service shop - or stuff/things AND service?

Colbaltjars62 09-06-2010 07:10 PM

How about " A Quilting we will Go"

thismomquilts 09-06-2010 07:10 PM

I like White Sands Gifts - I also agree with avoiding "handmade" I like the idea of specialty, unique, etc... hmmm...

I agree. Using the words custom and specialty imply that you will do what suits your customer.

If you are only going to be online, your second line in your title would include words describing your expertise.
If you are also going to have an onsite shop you might want to include specific words in the main name/title. When we are travelling and I want to visit a quilt shop or specialty shop, I use my GPS.
If the shop name doesn't have the word 'quilt', 'stitch'or 'sew' in it or a derivative of, it won't come up when I do a GPS search using those words.

Sea Side Quilts and Gifts

charmpacksplus 09-06-2010 07:28 PM

Are you going to have an actual place of business where customers can shop or just work/sell from home/online? If you are just getting a business license you don't need to put Quilting * Embroidery * Sewing as part of the name of the business but it would be okay on a sign or letterhead.

I would keep it simple like Oceanside Stitches and Gifts, or Sue's Corner, or even just Your Name Enterprises. If you sell online on sites like Etsy or Ebay you don't have to use your real business name, in fact I read somewhere that you should not use your actual business name online.

This is all just my opinion.

cjomomma 09-06-2010 08:03 PM

How about using your screen name, This Mom Quilts. I love your screen name.

cjr 09-06-2010 08:06 PM

Keep the business name short and catchy.

I like ocean breeze ouilts. How about Sewing by The Sea

bearisgray 09-07-2010 04:20 AM

If you live five miles from the ocean, that's kind out of sight from the water?

costumegirl 09-07-2010 05:07 AM

These are great names!! :)

thismomquilts 09-07-2010 05:22 AM

Wonderful suggestions here - I love the seaside, oceanside, sands, village kind of thoughts. I MAY be able to put some of my products in my husbands shop and hang a smaller sign there. I am definitely looking into the whole Etsy thing - I feel Ebay is too expensive. Thank you all for your great suggestsions for names and the unique, specialty ideas too. You are a great help!

raptureready 09-07-2010 05:31 AM

Ocean Breeze Creations

uniquely individual
embroidered, quilted, & sewn
gifts for the discriminating giver

Lyn 09-07-2010 06:05 AM

White Sands Gifts conjures up for me the little craft shops on the beach that make seashell gifts and tee shirts. Sorry. And if you put quilt in the name they think that is all you do what about White Sands Artisan?

Jupiter 09-07-2010 07:48 AM

'White Sands anything' sounds to me like you are making sand candles. lol a throw-back from the 1970's

Perfect name and discription (If she doesn't want it, can I have it? I'm in Florida also.) You are so creative raptureready

I agree, great name.

fmd36 09-07-2010 09:43 AM

I would suggest that the biz name not be too cutsey and definitely say what you do. Ours is
SMM Embroidery and Gifts. Owners name and addy on biz cards, especially if you are going to do shows. Phone and web page addy if you have one. I would leave off email. Custom is on there somewhere. People like to know who they are doing biz with, In NH you register your name with the Secretary of State and pay a nominal fee. I believe it is good for 5 yrs. We moved and forgot to renew it and someone else took the original name. So we modified it. Be sure to register for paying sales tax...NH does not have one. Please feel free to PM me if you have other questions...been doing custom emb. since 1993 and have now gone back to my first love...sewing.

galvestonangel 09-07-2010 06:14 PM

My suggestion would be : Unique Gifts, Etc under that I would put: Custom Quilts, Embroidery, and more

Sometimes if you put beachy words in, people will think you only do beachy things.

I also like: This Mom Quilts, it's cute but I don't think it sounds as professional as you want to sound.

Whatever you choose, Good Luck with it. Your already lucky to be able to stay at home with you young ones.

karenchi 09-07-2010 06:28 PM

Try Bonanzle also.

How about Colorful Creations

ashiecat 09-07-2010 06:47 PM

Whatever name you decide on, look it up on the internet to see how many others there are out there. You don't want to be the 501st 'Sewing by the Sea'. Also, don't kow if FL is like MO, but there are 2 fabric stores near me with the exact same name about 30 miles apart & they are not related.

Maksi 09-07-2010 07:02 PM

The Quilt Dish

patsyo56721 09-08-2010 03:11 AM

Since Florida is the Sunshine state I woud use Sunshine in the name.

HELLuvvANGEL 09-08-2010 03:21 AM

When you said Fl and the ocean immediately i heard my mind say ,,,,, BreezyQuiltz,,,,,,,, well theres a suggestion. Best of luck being at home!

Patched 09-08-2010 04:04 AM

I agree, "This Mom Quilts."

lillybeck 09-08-2010 04:52 AM

How about Cotton Candy by the Sea Shore? This brings to mind fall because the fairs are in the fall around FL and at the boardwalks they sell cotton candy.

quiltmom04 09-08-2010 05:07 AM

I agree that I would avoid "Handmade", "handcrafted" or any of those other words - they don't sound as professional as I'm sure your quilts are. And "gifts" sounds to me like the cheesy stuff you find at a travel stop "gift shop". We have a furniture store in the area called "George's Woodcrafts". Before I went there (and then only because we needed to find something to entertain my dad who had been a woodworker) I thought they made stuff like paper towel holders or kleenex boxes. But they have the most gorgeous furniture they make right there. But, with that name, you'd never know it. Someone suggested "Village Artisan Studio". That 's probably my favorite so far.
