I always buy my backing, off white and bleached muslin from a shop about an hours drive from me. I also buy the basic, pink,blue, yellow and green for baby quilts by the bolt from the same place.

i buy by the bolt all the time.. Depending which and where you get yours they may discount since you're taking the whole thing. Mine discounts anywhere from 20%-60% depending on if its newer or hasnt moved in the store..

+1 on the other comments, and I'd add this: Make sure you see and feel a sample before you commit to an entire bolt, so you're sure it's what you want...

I frequently by fabric by the bolt. Sometimes I will split a bolt with a frend or relative. It is sooo handy to have the bolt of white or off white , as they are such cornerstones in a stash. Some muslin is on 50 yard bolts so make sure you know how much you can handle both from a volume stand point and $$$.
I have used the LQS for such purchases, as well as online retailers. Do your homework ahead of time and know exactly which one you want... Manufacture , and the manufactures number. That way it makes it easier for your source . |
I second the check the hand feel before you commit to an entire bolt. I was at JoAnns the other day looking for white on white and bolts that looked identical and had the same price and manufacturer felt completely different, one was a heavier weight and you couldn't read through it and the other was felt really lightweight.

My local Hobby Lobby carries many colors of Kona solids. If you want to buy a bolt of something, they'll order the bolt for you.

I order from a place called Marshalls Dry Goods in Arkansas. I shop mostly at a discount fabric store here in Oklahoma City and I think that is where he gets a lot of his fabrics so I was familiar with their stock. It is comparable to the white on whites at Hancocks. Their prices are very good. I also buy 80/20 batting by the roll from them. it is 96" x 30 yds and the cost plus shipping is $133. or about $4.50 a yard.

I go to Marshall's Dry Goods with friends and we buy bolts of fabric and then we swap yardage. Bolts usually have 15 yards so five of us get 3 yards from each bolt for $2.98 a yard sometimes less. To get the dealer cost per yard you have to buy the bolt. You can order wholesale online or retail. Wholesale you have to go to a different site and call your order. I love buying bolts of fabric. I always have enough to finish or add to.

Any fabric store will order (or sell if they already have it) fabric by the bolt. I've order from Walmart and Hobby Lobby, so I'm sure any other store would do the same. |

Pohlar fabrics in southern Indiana had that discount policy. And on the last day of the month, they used to discount the rest of the bolt if you would buy it all. Pays to ask the manager, if the employee does not know, what discounts might be available as they often are not published.
