Buying thread online?????

Has anyone here ordered online from Red Rock Threads in Pahrump, Nevada? If so, what has been your experience with them? Also, if anyone has ordered from Superior Threads, what has been your experience with them? Thanks for any advice you can offer....

Superior Threads is great! They also have lots of info/tutorials on their site.

Superior Threads are great. The thread is great. Customer Service is great. Can you tell that I'm a fan? Their web site is full of good information.

I have ordered from Red Rock Threads before and was very happy with their service, products and delivery time.

Lucio 11-14-2012 12:47 PM

I have ordered from both and have been very satisfied with them both. Red Rock was a little cheaper and arrived in just 3 days but that is probably because I live in S. Cal. I get Superior's newsletter which is very informative.

I am a die-hard Superior fan. Their thread is great quality, AND I can get it here locally, I don't have to order it online. A few months back I switched from piecing with Connecting Threads cones to Bottom Line, a Superior 60 weight poly, and I love love love it.

Neesie 11-14-2012 03:08 PM

I've ordered from both and have been very happy. However, I now usually order from Superior, as I love the Superior thread and it's a bit cheaper.

snipforfun 11-14-2012 04:16 PM

You may want to check with Superior about using Bottom Line for piecing as it tends to melt at high temperatures. You can see about this on their thread reference chart. They recommend (and I use) So Fine if you prefer polyester

Red Rock is great! Good prices, decent shipping prices and very quick service. I haven't used Superior yet so I can't comment on that.

virtualbernie 11-14-2012 05:50 PM

I have ordered from both and love both of them! Don't know about the Bottom Line/So Fine but funny story--many long years ago when I first started quilting, I would faithfully iron my seams and they would fall apart! Back then I didn't know the difference between poly and cotton thread. I thought my iron was overheating and became afraid to use it so I cut off the cord so no one else would fish it out of the trash and use the "defective" iron!

I buy Superior's King Tut thread from my LQS and I totally love that thread. Had not heard of Red Rock till just now, so looked it up and bookmarked it.

Totally agree...love all their threads. There clubs are nice too.

I have ordered from both and no problems. Great thread from Superior. My favorite online shop to order thread is:

LAQUITA 11-14-2012 08:10 PM

okay ladies, what weight of thread do you use in your machine / bobbins for piecing?
What weight do you use for hand appliquing?

Thanks so much for the help.

Prism99 11-14-2012 08:27 PM

For piecing, my absolute favorite is Aurifil 50wt 2-ply (top and bobbin). However, I also like Threadart's 60wt polyester bobbin thread for piecing (both top and bobbin) and it's a lot less expensive. I have tested this poly with an iron to make sure it doesn't melt, and it has not melted for me. Here's a link to it:
http://www.amazon.com/Bobbin-Thread-...dp/B0034W118Q/

With both of these threads my seams lie flatter and my piecing is therefore more accurate.

Superior is GREAT! Even if you decide not to order from there, sign up for their newletter - they have tons of information. Tension, Needles, Thread, etc.

Have never this problem. In fact, have never had ANY problem with Bottom Line. Recently had to use some Gutermann thread because I needed a bright teal, and I didn't have anything even close to the right color in Bottom Line. It was pure misery. I was so happy when that project was done and I could ditch that Gutermann.

Prism99 11-15-2012 04:07 PM

I would say test the thread for yourself. That's what I did with an inexpensive Threadart polyester 60wt thread. I sewed on scrap fabric and then ironed it for much longer than I normally would (on my iron's hottest heat setting) and it was perfectly fine. This may not be true for all polyester threads, but it's simple enough to test.

Funny - hand appliqueing was how I first got turned onto Bottom Line. I was looking for silk thread, but it's expensive and you have to buy a whole spool - what if you need 10 or 12 different colors, but only a few yards in each color? Someone suggested Bottom Line for applique, I tried it, and it works beautifully for applique - it sinks right into the fabric and becomes invisible, just like the silk. So then I purchased one of those assorted donuts full of different colored bobbins, which is great, because now I have 118 yards each of 46 different colors. You know how much that would have cost if I had purchased silk?

BellaBoo 11-15-2012 04:51 PM

I prefer very thin thread in my bobbin at least a 70wt. WonderFil is 100wt and is great. I can use a 50wt 3 ply thread, like Connecting Threads Cotton when I use a thin thread in the bobbin. There are a lot of thin thread brands to choose. There are so many good brands of thread being manufactured now. Glide by FilTec is a new favorite of mine. For applique I use YLI silk thread because I have a lot of it and my stitches don't show with the silk thread. I use the silk thread for handsewing bindings on my quilts. Superior now has silk thread in many colors. I love silk thread.

Thank you all for your advice!! :)

Ditto!!! I have ordered several times from Superior and I had a great experience!! Everything came as ordered and in a timely manner!!!!!

I have been buying thread for my long arm from Createforless.com. I think their prices are about the best so far. I have gotten from Red Rock too, but love the Createforless.com site for everything. My machine seems to prefer YLI.

patchsamkim 11-16-2012 04:27 AM

I have heard great things about Superior threads but have not yet ordered from them. I have ordered from Red Rock and was very satisfied with my purchase from them.

mhansen6 11-16-2012 06:49 AM

I get most of my thread from Red Rock Threads. My machine loves Aurifil 50. They have fast and accurate service.

hisgrace1 11-16-2012 07:38 AM

I was under the impression you only use cotton for machine quilting.....so it's ok to use polyester also? Do you use different thread for piecing than you do for say stitching in the ditch, or free motion?

wendiq 11-16-2012 08:14 AM

I, too, have ordered from both....in fact, it's the only two companies I EVER order from.....Guess that tells you I'm satisfied with their service and products!

Tammi M 11-16-2012 09:01 AM

I found Superior Thread on a half off sale at Joann's, of all places, online. I have never seen it in the store itself. I had used King Tut before and absolutely loved it, so was able to stock up. I also found a Superior Masterpiece thread, so decided to try it. It leaves a lovely stitch, but my older Bernina doesn't seem to like it very well (Masterpiece). I have had some trouble with the thread breaking in both the top and bobbin. I realize this post doesn't tell you anything about the service from those 2 companies, but I would recommend King Tut thread to anyone. I am also going to check out the Superior website for info and newsletter.

sparkys_mom 11-16-2012 10:07 AM

I've used both and been happy with both.

quiltnotes 11-16-2012 10:11 AM

I buy almost all my thread from Red Rock. Wide selection of Aurifil, which is my favorite. Very good service, have used them for years.

newbiequilter 11-16-2012 10:50 AM

Superior is....superior. Go to their site and sign up for their newsletter and daily specials (if you wish). I use their So Fine for piecing. I buy it by the cone - 3,250 in the large cone. Never had any problems with the So Fine and my basics are white, cream, medium gray and black. I use the Bottom Line for hand work. Their newsletter has a lot of information and they are very informative about the application for each of their products as well as needle size. Guess you could say I am a Superior gal! And, no, I don't work for them.

quiltmom04 11-16-2012 01:49 PM

I've ordered a lot from superior threads and they are great. Very fast! It helps,if you have the actual thread chart for the type of thread you want, because the computer screen colors can sometimes be inaccurate, although they generally have a verbal description.

The quilters who do art quilts, applique, embroidery, thread painting, and machine quilting use anything and everything that will fit through their machines as thread. Even the thick ornate thread will fit in a bobbin, you hand wind it on the bobbin. For stitches to sink in the fabric you need a thin thread, for the stitches to stand out you need a thick thread. I have mixed nylon with rayon with poly with cotton with silk. There are no rules I follow when making a quilt.

Oh my gosh, I did not know that! I always piece with Bottom Line. Ouch! Will switch to So Fine. How high is "high temperature." Thanks for sharing.

As another poster said - test it. Stitch some Bottom Line on a scrap and iron it on the hottest setting. I've done this and not had a problem with any melting, so I continue to use Bottom Line for piecing.

gramma nancy 11-16-2012 05:39 PM

I have not bought from either, but I look forward to receiving Superior's free newsletter. It always includes a joke. Although it is frequently a joke at the expense of women, it is almost always sidesplitting.

Silver Needle 11-16-2012 06:07 PM

I use Superior's Masterpiece thread for piecing. It's 50 wt cotton but not at all linty.

Tristan never has the color Aurifil threads that I'm looking for and finding anything on their site is a nightmare.

For those interested in Superior, they have extended their free DVD offer to December 11th. Here is a link to it:
https://www.superiorthreads.com/shop...hread-Seminar/

It's about 1.75 hours explaining a *lot* about different threads. Shipping cost is about $4, I think. (I got mine last month.)

It really is worth the shipping, IMO.
