I have 5+ yards each of 2 fabrics that I would like to use for a 2 color quilt--how can I get the biggest "bang for my buck" and get the biggest quilt possible? I can use other fabric for the backing. Would love to be able to get a full/queen top if possible--What pattern would you use?

Hunter's Star!!! Shouldn't be much wastage. I also love winding ways, but there will be alot more waste
|
there really are tons of quilts made for just two fabrics. There was a book a few years ago, but it fails me who wrote it at this moment. any star pattern, will work even a disappearing 9 patch could be done!

Potato Chip pattern. I made one with only
3 1/2 yds of one color and 5 yards of another. I love the way it turned out. |

I would say Hunter's Star. although there are lots of traditional 2 color quilts. I checked out drunkard's path with 6" squares, QuiltPro says it will take 5 1/8 yd each for 72x96, although their layout could be more effective use of fabrics.

My favorite 2 color quilt is Day & Night Quilt from Quilt in a Day.

This is a name for a type of block made with a 1/4 circle and and outer piece, called Pie and A LA Mode by some. These can be arranged in a wide number of ways. It can be confusing, as the unit with several sub-blocks is also called drunkard's path. The individual sub units can be anywhere from 3 or 4 " to 12". I think 4 or 6" are most common. This is a very common pattern. You can draw it yourself with a compass on the finished block size you want, (adding seam allowances) or download it from places like quilterscache.com The one I drew up takes 4 wide and 4 high of these 24" larger squares to make a 96" quilt.
The pattern is available thru almost any block list, such as quilterscache.com drunkard's path quilt, without border |

Here's a nice two-color quilt that could be done in almost any two complimentary colors:
I wish I could get the photos to show up in my post instead of as files, but the directions keep telling me to "hit the browse button". Of course, I cannot find a "browse button" anywhere in this area. Can anyone clear this up for me? Warmest regards! Oh, I see. You put them in the file box areas, and they open up into pictures once you send the file. Neat!

Those quilts are both beautiful.

gorgeous quilts!

Thanks for putting these videos on. Sometimes the books are confusing. I love this pattern!
|
shoo fly is a great traditional block pattern that only uses 2 colors.
|
After seeing the red and white exhibit in NYC earlier this year I would google red and white quilts.

I made Queen size sampler blocks (12" finished) in 2 colors for SDD wedding and one for my sister with 4 yards each color. I would sash these with the lighter of the two fabrics tho I didn't for my sister. You would have plenty of fabric.
In my webshots link, below, #s 3,4,5 is the wedding quilt just layed out. #s 6,7 is my sister's of fabric that she just loved and couldn't bear to cut into. Each used 30 blocks from Quilter's Cache. If you would like a list of the blocks...I spent hours hunting for them....just pm me and I'd be glad to give you the info. I have found that the smaller the pattern, the more fabric you use. What ever you decide to do, have fun with it. (^..^) |
A two color Churn Dash is really pretty.
|
In "Family Ties: Old Quilt Patterns from New Cloth" by Nancilu Butler Burdick, there is an "Improved Nine-Patch" in green and white on page 49. Really pretty quilt, on my "to do" list (someday!).
This was the best link I could find- http://www.patternsfromhistory.com/c...nnas_quilt.htm When it was two colors in my book, the four outer pointy "patches" and the center square of the nine-patch are green, and everything else is white. Scalloped edge, with green binding. |
I actually made this quilt in a smaller size with help from the quilt teacher. I didn't have enough of the fabric for the full size. It came out beautifully.

The more pieces in a block and the smaller the units of each block, the more fabric you lose in seam allowances. The potato chip quilt actually is one of the better patterns for using less fabric. |

I made the Hunter's Star with about 4 yards of each fabric using a technique from a tutorial on this board. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-50608-1.htm
The quilt finished 63x82, 5 yards should make at least a full size. The brown/beige quilt was made after I saw a block on this board and did the calculations to make the block then the quilt.

Go to http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore.html
You can find many, many blocks here in Alphabetical order or block size. It will give you not only the block pattern, but also a picture of the finished quilt. Just make sure you have lots of time, cause you can spend hours & hours here. |
I've never heard of a potato chip quilt before, but yours is beautiful. Thanks for sharing the picture of your lovely quilt.
