Can I pick your brain?!!

Ok so I have a neon wonky star quilt I have pinned and ready to be quilted. And for the life of me I cannot decide 100% what design to do! Normally I have my quilting ideas figured out while I am piecing it but nothing came to me with this one. I originally wanted to do concentric circle spiral design all over then I was thinking spirals in the grey and pebbles in the stars but I have no idea. The only thing I do know is that I am using a light grey thread lol. Thanks for any input!!

I think I might reverse the order and do pebbles in the grey background to have the stars puff up and do a minimum of quilting on them, maybe echo the shape? Great quilt top!

You want the stars to come forward so pebbles would not be good unless in the background. I think I would do an overall design on this one. Very cool looking quilt! Nice job!

I love the fabric you chose!! I LUV bright prints on a black background. You made a very bright happy quilt. I also would do the background so the stars will pop!! Good Luck !!

what about just following the pattern of the stars ? i am a newbie so bear with me if i gave you a wrong advise (ha ha ha). a newbie giving advise to an expert (that's new). anyway HAPPY THANKSGIVING to you all.

I haven't done a lot of machine quilting so I would echo the stars (I'm a straight forward kind - and easy! but I also do think it would look good - as would the other suggestions)

I like this idea, too.

I would absolutely pebble the background and do the minimum I could get away with in the stars to make the stars pop.

I would quilt lines radiating out from the centre of each star to the points at maybe 1/2" scale. You can use rulers or draw it on without needing to buy/download stencils. Check out here:

For the background, I tend to like this one:

but if you really want pebbling on the background you could try this one:

OR treat the backgound as a 2ndary pinwheel design and also quilt with radiating lines.

Hey, there!!! Newbies are the same as experienced when it comes to being creative! I always listen as sometimes we can get into a rut.

i'd outline the stars, and do the spiral in the back to make the stars pop

earthwalker 11-27-2013 03:37 PM

Echo the stars to make them the "star"....oh dear bit early for pathetic humour. Anyway....its a beauty.

Love your quilt - but had to say, we're practically neighbors! I even belong to the quilt guild in Lebanon. Would love to see you there.

I think I'd like quilted star points (of radiating lines, maybe?) at the north, south, east and west positions around each star, coming from between the pieced points. Then pebbles or some other background around those, with minimal quilting overtop the pieced stars---maybe just stitch in the ditch those.

quilttiger 11-28-2013 05:55 AM

The pebble idea sounds fab. How about stippling on the background with bright variegated thread?

This is not my quitling, but I used this quilting in a star on a QOV. I like that it is easy, no marking and very pretty. You can use any fill behind. It accents the star with out being too fussy. I love your colors! If this was mine, I would quilt a lighter grey in the blocks and a shade or two lighter than the background everywhere else. I dont' like to match the backing exactly...I cannot SEE it! lolol

tessagin 11-28-2013 08:05 AM

Love this quilt! ANd like others something that would make the stars puff up some.

quiltmom04 11-28-2013 09:46 AM

I think I would do a background design - I wouldn't do a pebble, as I think that's too dense to be soft and cuddly. And I think a thread that closely matches the background fabric would be best. You have so much going on with those fabulous bright stars, that I think light grey quilt will distract from it. And to be honest, it I were actually quilting this, I would do a spiral out from the center of the star in whatever thread best matched them. A lot of thread changing - yes, but it think it will highlight the stars. If you just outline them and don't do any quilting I them, they will soon look 'flabby' and not pop the way you intend.

ro 11-28-2013 10:59 AM

how about echoing the stars

leighway 11-29-2013 06:13 AM

I'd do large starbursts like fireworks in an overall pattern to complement the neon colors.

GABBYABBY 11-29-2013 02:42 PM

I love your quilt. I think any thing you come up with to quilt it will be beautiful.

fireworkslover 11-30-2013 10:11 AM

I think your focus should be on the stars, so stitch in the ditch around all the stars then some kind of wide filler for the solid background area using a thread that matches. Since there are points and some open areas you could do like a teardrop shape or keep with straight lines and use the pinwheel shape that appears in the space between the stars (the negative space).
