Zip Lock Baggies...........who knew?

Various comments when you google this,,, worth a try now that spring is in the air !

ZIP LOCK BAG - Good tip!

We went with friends to a restaurant on Sunday for lunch and sat in the patio section beside the store. We happened to notice zip lock baggies pinned to a post and a wall. The bags were half filled with water, each contained 4 pennies, and they were zipped shut. Naturally we were curious! The owner told us that these baggies kept the flies away! So naturally we were even more curious! We actually watched some flies come in the open window, stand around on the window sill, and then fly out again. And there were no flies in the eating area! This morning I checked this out on Google. Below are comments on this fly control idea. I'm now a believer! Zip-lock water bags

#1 Says:
I tried the zip lock bag and pennies this weekend.. I have a horse trailer. The flies were bad while I was camping. I put the baggies with pennies above the door of the LQ. NOT ONE FLY came in the trailer. The horse trailer part had many. Not sure why it works but it does!

#2 Says: Fill a zip lock bag with water and 5 or 6 pennies and hang it in the problem area. In my case it was a particular window in my home. It had a slight passage way for insects. Every since I have done that, it has kept flies and wasps away. Some say that wasps and flies mistake the bag for some other insect nest and
are threatened.

#3 Says: I swear by the plastic bag of water trick. I have them on porch and basement. We saw these in Northeast Mo. at an Amish grocery store & have used them since. They say it works because a fly sees a reflection & won't come around.

#4 Says: Regarding the science behind zip log bags of water? My research found that the millions of molecules of water presents its own prism effect and given that flies have a lot of eyes, to them it's like a zillion disco balls reflecting light, colors and movement in a dizzying manner. When you figure that flies are prey for many other bugs, animals, birds, etc., they simply won't take the risk of being around that much perceived action. I moved to a rural area and thought these "hillbillies" were just yanking my city boy chain but I tried it and it worked immediately! We went from hundreds of flies to seeing the occasional one, but he didn't hang around long.

WOW! I hadn't a clue...I've never heard this! I'm glad to know it works.

GrannieAnnie 04-25-2012 08:21 AM

I accidentally picked up PINT sized freezer bags the other day. They are too small for most of my zip lock bag needs.

Sounds like I've found an excellent use for them----------headed to the kitchen in just a few.

I will have to give this a try also-I love to sew out on my front porch when the weather is nice , so jealous you are already outside sewing while I am sitting here with temps in the 50s :( LOL

Monroe 04-25-2012 08:28 AM

New to me! Wish i could find something decent to repel blackflies in the Adirondacks.

joyce888 04-25-2012 09:01 AM

I had totally forgot about my Mom doing this in Missouri where the flies are a real problem. I don't have a problem with flies but I am going to try it against ladybugs. We get more than our share of ladybugs for some reason.

May in Jersey 04-25-2012 09:07 AM

Wow, That's interesting - you learn something new and, in this case, useful every day.

barny 04-25-2012 09:39 AM

a few years ago we went to Palo Duro Canyon, in Texas, and they took us out on a mountain for breakfast. They cooked everything on a built fire. At the tables they had baggies all over the place[no pennies] and NO FLIES THERE. It works. the people there told us the flies sees HUGE FLIES LOOKING BACK AT THEMSELVES. Maybe so

NURSELYNN1 04-25-2012 09:46 AM

We live on a farm and have done this on the house, shop and calf barn. It really does work

quiltinggirl 04-25-2012 09:57 AM

Thank you for sharing this info! I am going to try this now that summer is around the corner.

Pam Riggs 04-25-2012 10:25 AM

I have been doing this for years - it really works!!

Tartan 04-25-2012 10:48 AM

I will try this at the cottage this year. At supper time I always seem to have one fly the escapes annihilation and pesters the table.

Kitsie 04-25-2012 05:42 PM

Wow, will have to try this around the barn! Is a sandwich size bag OK or should it be bigger? If the theory is a "mirror" or refracted light do they have to be outside where there is sunlight?

Thanks for sharing it!

kathdavis 04-25-2012 06:48 PM

Do you zip the bags shut or leave it open when you put the water in it?

mzmama 04-25-2012 07:03 PM

Ok, so what ya got for mosquitoes...

Ruby the Quilter 04-25-2012 07:37 PM

What a great idea - and no toxic sprays!

0tis 04-25-2012 07:49 PM

I can't wait to try this - flys just drive me crazy.

QuiltingCrazie 04-25-2012 08:22 PM

lol I lived in Louisiana years ago and that is an old southern trick but works fantastic!! I did it in Oklahoma too and the whole street thought I was nuts but I never had flies and I started seeing baggies go up by doors all down the street HAHAHA

maryb44662 04-26-2012 02:49 PM

I grew up in the country (sticks) on a dirt road. There were some folks that pinned a cotton ball to their screen door as they said it kept the flies away. Mom was born and raised in Chicago, so she didn't go for a lot of the southern tricks, so to speak, therefore, we never used the cotton ball on the screen door. Does anyone have any idea if this trick worked or not with the flies? Mary

solstice3 04-27-2012 05:24 AM

WOW!!! Great info. Wonder if it works for any other insects

jamsbuying 04-27-2012 05:33 AM

Never heard of this!! Thanks for sharing.

My grandmother tied cotton balls on the outside of her screen doors in the summer in North Florida when I was a kid. They had a dairy farm and lots of flies. I don't really know if it worked or not. I think the flies were afraid to sit on the screen and therefore didn't fly inside every time the door was opened. I about forgot about that until I read your post.

QuiltnLady1 04-27-2012 06:13 AM

I will have to try this -- if DH doesn't think it is too crazy to go with. I hate the flies!!

Melinda in Tulsa 04-27-2012 06:50 AM

thanks for the tip! Just hung one up on my front porch, now to see if it works!

judykay 04-27-2012 07:13 AM

Now to find something that easy and safe for the environment for mosquitoes.

quiltmau 04-27-2012 07:20 AM

will have to try this-too bad I did not know this when I lived in Australia. The Australia National salute is a hand wave in front of the face to move the flies along!!

Flies are pesky little things-wonder if this also works for no-see-'um's or midgies as some call them.

veryvirginia 04-27-2012 07:51 AM

Anybody have a cure for mosquitos that buzz around my front yard swing? i hate to spray stuff on my skin but tired of being a pint low all summer long.

Joyce, You can box those "Ladies" and send them to me....I wish we had more in our area!

Be careful what you wish for. Most of the Ladybugs in MN have interbred w/ the Asian Ladybird Beetle which is more aggressive and bites humans, ask me I know.

Thanks for sharing. Gotta try this over the weekend.

labtechkty 04-27-2012 01:17 PM

wow who knew....going camping in a few weeks, will definitely give it a try...

Stitchnripper 04-27-2012 02:13 PM

Does it work just on your basic fly, or, on mosquitos too.

I always check snopes first. They aren't saying it doesn't work though.
If you have a fly problem, guess you can look at a gooey icky fly strip hanging from the ceiling, or a bag of money. :)

grandme26 04-27-2012 03:09 PM

I have a doggy door and have to keep the plastic open for my little dog. I will try this and see if it works this summer

misspenny 04-27-2012 05:29 PM

My mother used the cotton in the screen too! Can't remember if it worked or not. Since I don't have a hole in my screen think I'll try the ziplock bag.

Cornerstone quilter 04-27-2012 09:34 PM

How do you hang them up without piercing the bag and making it leak?

Christine27 04-28-2012 03:10 AM

My classroom gets bees and wasps in the windows all through the colder months-October through at least March. (When it warms up they move out.) I'm going to try the water and penny baggies in the window sills next fall and see if that helps.

Gladys 04-28-2012 08:06 AM

Wow this is great! Thanks guys.
