When I purchased my Singer 237 Fashion Mate, this came along with it. I really have no idea what it is or how to use it, and neither does my mom, who has been sewing for years. Anyone know what this is?
Thanks! |
looks like a buttonholer
Button Hole cams ???
Thanks! How does this attach to my machine??
Buttonhole maker.
Looks like a buttonhole attachment, but I wouldn't know how to attach it.
I had a kenmore sewing maching that had something similiar, and it attached right to the pressure foot and the dial would adjust for the size of the button hole.
You can find a video tutorial and download a manual here.....
http://thisisemilykate.blogspot.com/...ttachment.html I hope emilykate doesn't mind me posting this link.......are there some kind of rules? |
That is most definately at buttonhole maker, with different templates. It attaches very much like a walking foot, from behind the needle shaft. Check the singer web site for some info.
It's a buttonholer.
Right. and the cams slip in on the bottom. the ends of the button hole can be straight or round like the die shape on the back of each cam. adjust the width of the stich on the buttonhole with the numbers on the side of the plastic box, i believe.

It is a buttonholer

I haven't seen one of those in years. It a button hole maker. My Mom had one with her 401 singer machine. That is what I learned to sew on! :o)
Yup that is a buttonhole maker for sure.
I would never had guessed that was a button hole maker :D:D:D
I have a old Domestic sewing machine. I don't know from what year. I think the 40's or 50's. I got it at a yardsale a few years ago for a whappin $20 in a wooden desk and all.
Anyways, if you cannot find the info you need I have the manual for the buttonhole worker for this which I'm sure its about the same. I can make copies and send them to you. |
A buttonholer - I have one of those - wonder how much mine would go for on E-Bay - it is about 50+++ years old - machine is in a "beautiful" blonde cabinet and all the attachments are in a box. Don't make them like they used to!!
Did you recieve a book with your machine? If you didn't go to your nearest singer or Brother sewing machine shop in your area and they will show you how. I found parts to my mother's machine that I did not understand that they help me with it.
Wow really? i never would have guessed, none of my button hole foots look anything like that.
That's a button holer. My mom had one just like it for her Singer.
You learn something new every day! I would never have guessed that is a button holer. What a wonderful resource this place is!
it is a button holer it makes different sizes by the guides that you put in it
This is the same buttonholer that went with the sewing machine I grew up with. Sorry I don't remember how to attach it....when I was about 15, (many eons ago!! LOL), my mom bought a new machine that had a buttonholer feature, so no more attachments. It did make lovely, even, buttonholes. I hope you can figure out how to attach it!!!

Its for making buttonholes. My mom had one like it on her old treddle machine. It makes great buttonholes. The cams are for the sizes. I learned to sew on her old treddle machine. She inherited it from her great grandmother when she was a little girl and still has it. It sews beautifully.

Hi Sally - everyone is correct - it is a button hole maker. The bottom should open and the cams snap into the base. Some where there should be a shank attachment on it (generally right in the front - the bottom of the photo). You unscrewed the presser foot and its attachment and replaced it with this unit. The needle stitched in the sliding unit at the bottom. Those lines are there to help with placement on the garment The top knob helps determine where in the buttonhole starts.
The slider on the left controlled how wide the zigzag was while the cam controlled the back and forward movement. They made great buttonholes. Remember to drop the feed dogs. |
too cool...I have one of those LOL - it's in a drawer tucked away, same color too, have not used it in yeons.
That is a great botton holer! My first machine was an old Singer, those metal parts are far superior to the newer plastic accesories they try to pawn off on us. If you're into making your own clothing, you'll get a lot of use out of that. If your machine didn't come witha manual, I would suggest downloading one at the Singer site. Happy sewing!
It attaches to the shank, as the needle goes up & down, it advances the stitch, you need to download the manual for your model for exact instructions. Good luck
That attachment still makes the prettiest buttonholes. I have the straight stitch Singer machine I received as a high school graduation gift and I hang on to it for sewing buttonholes and doing heavy sewing.
I have three of these. They work great. I love them.
I have books for them. If you need me to I can copy and send you a copy of the book. |
If you put the make & model number in your Google or search line, you will see that you can get a manual for your machine if you do not have one. You also may find instrucitions on one of the links regarding the buttonhole maker you have.
It is a Singer slant needle button hold attachment.
Since it's pink, where the attachment bolts onto the sewing machine shank will be at a slant. If it was green it would be for a low shank. If you don't have a slant needle sewing machine, you will need an adapter to bolt it on. Remove the bolt in the presser foot shank, attached the button holder and tighten the bolt. |
I have this buttonhole attachment. Remember when using it to place the plate over the feed dogs. I got it when I bought my 1943 English Singer with my high school graduation money. I still use it as it is easier to get exact buttonholes than with my new machine.
Sally,
That is the button holer.. It attaches to your machine. Does it have instructions on how to use it? |
It's a Griest buttonholer
That is a buttonhole maker. I had one similar to that with my first singer in 1960. It works really good, in fact, after I purchased my first Bernina, I would go back to my old worn out Singer to make my Buttonholes. ENJOY!!!!

I have two complete sets of these kits. One is really old and must have come with the machine I bought. The other one looks completely new and has never been used. This one looks like your picture. It comes in a green oval shaped container with the actual attachment, a manual, a throat plate, several templates for the different sized buttonholes, a screw driver. I am sending a picture of the first page.
