I mean like if you are cutting apples, do you smell apples? Tonight I was cutting candycane fabric and all of a sudden I smelled peppermint.

Ahhh, the power of suggestion!

dbarbey 03-07-2010 08:19 PM

I am so glad I am not the only one. I was pressing some lavender fairy frost fabric and I smelled lavender. I thought I was losing my mind.

littlehud 03-07-2010 08:56 PM

I can't say I've ever smelled my fabric, but I'll try again tomorrow. :-D

Honey 03-07-2010 10:32 PM

sandpat 03-08-2010 05:32 AM

beachlady 03-08-2010 05:49 AM

Hmmmmmm. Wondering about you......

tlrnhi 03-08-2010 05:54 AM

I don't smell the pictures of what's in/on the fabric, but I do smell fabric when I get it/buy it. Ok, I snort it......lol

gaigai 03-08-2010 07:22 AM

Sorry for the hijack!! Just wanted to say I love your lattice work in your picture. Did you hand applique or machine piece? Just being nosey! :D

Hi sewcrafty, no problem!! The lattice blocks are machine pieced. They are actually autograph blocks. The quilt was made for my grandfather's 90'th birthday. Friends and relatives signed it at the big party we threw him, and then he collected more autographs over the years. There is actually a topic about it.

Thanks for asking. Come to think about it, there are a lot of "smell memories" that quilt can evoke! :D

Totally following the hijack...what a lovely idea with the signature quilt! :D

Chasing Hawk 03-08-2010 10:26 AM

The only thing I have been smelling lately is cigarette smoke. My Aunt who passed away a 1 1/2 ago is paying me a visit. She must be having a good time with my Native American Lady ghost and the ghost cat we have.

You smell cigarette smoke when there is nobody around you smoking??? I thought I was the only one!!! I wonder if your Aunt is visiting me too? If so, I must tell her she's a little off course and send her on her way.

Mousie 03-08-2010 10:56 AM

your not being nosey, that's what this thread is about...do you stick your nose in stuff?
my answer: um, no! I actually believe I am allergic to new fabric...stuff they put on it. Makes me dizzy, lightheaded and sometimes my nose runs...in the fabric store, where there's a lot and I get to fondling everything...huh...except for the drippy nose, sounds kind of like a rondevous

I smell 'fire', when there isn't any. I get up sometimes from a dead sleep and walk through the house to make sure! Am I ok? you guys do that, right?

QuiltingGrannie 03-08-2010 11:06 AM

Mine just talks to me. No scents from it yet.

Mousie 03-08-2010 11:28 AM

well, dunno if my fabric smells like the pictures, but I do talk to it, and I hug it and....well...we have an understanding.
I adore it, and it soaks it up. win-win

I smell cigar smoke too when there is no one smoking. (ours is a smoke free house) My Mom said my Grampa like the occasional cigar maybe it is him.
Let her visit she loved to travel and see new places. Do you have any Bud Light? It was her favorite beer, if so she may stay for a few rounds.

maryb119 03-08-2010 04:27 PM

Oh Yes, I can smell a quilt shop for 20 miles..............

Honey 03-08-2010 06:05 PM

Every once in a while I smell my SIL's perfume and she has been gone for 35 years. My Dad passed 7 years ago and my Mom 2 years ago. I still smell his cigars and her powder.

ROFLMAO!! Did you know that there's such a thing as "scent exhaustion"? If you smell something long enough, the scent receptors in your nose stop processing the odor, so you stop smelling it.

Deecee 03-08-2010 07:20 PM

I'm butting in now -

TRUE! I work on a lavender farm. My DH says I "stink of it" when I get home from work - he hates it. I can't smell a thing.

pittsburgpam 03-08-2010 07:46 PM

I keep the door to my sewing room closed so no odors (or the cat) get in there. I love to open the door and smell that fresh fabric smell!

send me the pillow that you dream on...
don't you know that I still laugh with you?
Send me the pillow that you drool on,
So darling I can drool on it too...
 :-P

tee hee...I do this when i am cooking! I thought I was being ocd-ish! If you do it Pam, it must be ok:thumbup:

pittsburgpam 03-08-2010 08:16 PM

Absolutely not OCD! You know how odors get into fabrics and stay. Cooking odors, smoke, etc. It's just protecting your investment. :)

Wow! I'm so happy to hear that other folks experience this too. My Gram smoked, she rolled her own and her old Velvet cigarettes smelled different than the commerical made brands. Sometimes I smell this smoke and I think of Gram. She passed away about 28 years ago. She must be checking up on me seeing if I still mind my P's & Q's, even tho' I am 66 now.

Yes, I can smell my fabric and sometimes the dye that is used in some can be down right stinky.
