I do alot figuring too, like this, in my head, when I see these precuts, & alot of times, most of the time, they average out way too costly, no matter how nice the fabrics are...The only good deal for them, would be a really good sale, with alot marked off them... Even alot of kits are that way, so I don't buy kits either...

I am so guilty - i bought some off Etsy...I just can't help myself. It's less calories than a real candy bar!

Yes. but think of the indigestion they may cause. Hehe

Just thin of all the new ideas that come about because of the new sized pre-cuts !!

As I read the thread, good points being made on both sides, the pros and the cons.

If there is a niche for it in the market, good for the company, good for the consumer. We pay for convenience as well as for necessity. Obviously it has value and the marketing is geared to service those consumers.

Not being it that category, it's too pricey and for now, I can cut my own without difficulties. That being said, we are so visual. Our eyes soak up everything and those cute little cuts need a home so it puts a desire which works itself up and out so that next thing we know, here we are purchasing them based on looks, not practicality. Businesses LOVE us for that. ;)

Beyond that, yep, what cuts and what food names come next. Another smooth move, name it after sweet dessert treats. May irritate some to some degree, but brilliant for the association of food and fabric.

I don't think that's is a question of "so stupid." I just think that some people would rather have the convenience of having things cut and ready to go. Also, some people have problems with their hands and can't cut all that fabric. Arthritis is a big issue with us old folk.

Personally I haven't learned how to rotary cut. I still have a rotary cutter in the package. Realistically I don't have the space to cut out pieces from whatever yardage of fabric. I don't even have a table---I sew on a TV dinner stand from the lack of space. You try cutting a yard of fabric on a surface that your sewing machine barely fits on! lol. So I can kind of see the appeal of these pre-cut packages named after sweets. I think it would be great for people starting to learn how to rotary cut because some people find rotary cutting a bit scary. These jellyrolls, honey buns, candy bars, or whatever else they come out with would be great since they'd be starting out cutting from these pre-made strips rather than a yardage of fabric they really like (eliminates the worry of totally butchering up a fabric you simply adore).

interesting...although I hardly ever buy cuts. Good to know they are available if I ever get tired of the pain from fibro, with the cutting.
Thanks, ams

I don't think it's stupidity either but they think there are a whole lot of quilter's that would like to have the boring work done for them...
Me, I always wash fabric when I bring it home. I don't like the smell of it or the feel. I want to know what it's going to be like after it's laundered. To me, the sizing and dye take away from the real fabric.
I think fabric sizing is a way of hiding something...washing reveals the real fabric.. the quality.

They'll figure out a way to wrap up the border and baking and call them Cinnamon buns or something else tasty..

quilterfly 11-09-2010 05:50 PM

A member of our guild bought the Professional model AccuCut & now we pay her $40.00 per year & she will cut anything we want. How's that for convenience? I think these machines are the reason for the marketing mania with special cuts. They realized we really go for the convenience so they are coming up with new cuts all the time.

madamekelly 11-09-2010 07:27 PM

I have found a web site, where the lady who owns it, will cut YOUR fabric for you! I have problems with coordination, so I have sent some to her to be cut. Great turn around time, and everything is as I ask. PM me if you want info...

tooMuchFabric 11-09-2010 07:42 PM

This is $17.34 per yard !!!!!!!!!!!!

2.5" x 5" = 12.5 sq" to the piece
12.5 sq" x 40 pcs = 500 sq" to the set
500 sq" x 8 sets = 4000 sq" to the Candy Bar offer

36" x 41" = 1476 sq" to a yd of quilter's fabric

4000 sq" per Candy Bar offer divided by 1476 sq" per yd of quilter's fabric = 2.71 yds of quilter's fabric in the Candy Bar offer

$46.99 cost divided by 2.71 yds of quilter's fabric in Candy Bar offer = $17.34 per yard !!!!!!!!

Waaaay too rich for my blood. Or my pocketbook either.

Pat I agree with you totally, as we age our joints just aren't what they used to be and cutting all those little stripes can be a problem and a frustration for us.

Just when those of us with arthritis think we've found another helpful way to minimize our cutting the price per yard gives us a heart attack. AccuGo does several cuts but that's not cheap either. I hate the thought of having to give up quilting because the cost of more convenient options are out of question on my social security budget.

penski 11-09-2010 10:48 PM

what ever happened to the days everyone bought off the bolt and cut there own squares, strips and ect i noticed someone is always coming out with a "simpler way" to make a quilt

This is why they keep offering all these cut up pieces, more bucks. Interesting too, that when all cut up into small pieces, a little flaw that once would have rendered a cut unsaleable, can be discarded and sold for MORE! Thanks for doing the math, its why I cut my own. Yes I was scared to death of a rotary cutter until I found the one from grace with the ridge on the ruler, now I feel very safe. :-)

mimiof3 11-10-2010 06:01 AM

i like the precuts although I haven't bought any - it's seeing the pats and colors that mix so well. It's nice to know they are there w/having arthritis and carpal tunnel issues - it can get a little tough cutting and down the road may turn to those precuts.

alottafabrics 11-10-2010 01:10 PM

One thing I can see might happen, to fill the gap we see coming between convenience and cost,
is that someone such as members of this Board with younger bones and joints might cut these "new and interesting" shapes that come into fashion from time to time,
and sell them here at certainly more reasonable prices.

We are not limited to purchasing only from "the usual suspects" of commercial businesses.

I'm just sayin'.

This is the first time I heard of these!!

IMHO -- They're taking all of the fun out of the cutting process -- which is one of my favorite tasks in quilting.

I'm sure it's great for those who like to just get on with the piecing. To each his own.....

CORKY: You are too funny. Loved it. Neat idea, but expensive.

Katia 11-11-2010 10:49 PM

Anyone know of any good patterns using these cuts? I have a bunch of charm packs that I want to use and was thinking about cutting them into this size.

I also feel this way about unwashed fabric - and why I avoid pre-cuts.

Now - if washed fabric precuts were available - - -

What would you consider a "reasonable" price to pay for a 100 piece stack of washed 2.5 x 5 inch pieces?

(Even though I have a small drawer full of novelty fabrics cut this size - I'm hard-pressed to think of any other size cut that they will work well with. If I sew two pieces together, I end up with a 4.5 x 5 block. If I sew three together, I end up with a 6.5 x 5 block)
