My new grandson is due in October...I just can't seem to get started on this quilt for him. I have had a heck of a time finding the fabric I want (going with a doggie theme), now the pattern I was going to use just isn't speaking to me....I keep looking at all the baby quilts that get posted....nothing is shouting make me, make me....any ideas??? My fabric has fairly large prints...HELP

attached are the materials I have so far

If yu want simple, how about the Downy Quilts for Kids pattern? It looks good with larger prints.

montanablu 07-24-2010 10:44 AM

How many fabrics are you working with? There are lots of patterns out there that utilize large pieces of a focus fabric - some are made especially for those fabrics that are too pretty to cut! With so many cute baby patterns out there, I know it can be hard to find one that speaks to you! - sort of like all the hundreds of cereals they have on the shelves now - who can choose just one??!

tarib 07-24-2010 10:44 AM

does any one have the quilt book "Wee Wonder Quilts"? I borrowed the book from a friend and copied Hearts Aplenty, but.... did I miss or lose a page??? I have page 14, 16,17, 18 & 19 anyone know what was on page 15?

Warm Wishes is a good quilt for larger images.

tarib 07-24-2010 11:08 AM

I posted the materials I have so far to my original post

katier825 07-24-2010 11:47 AM

Warm wishes would look good. Or an alternating solid block with a 4 or 9 patch block. They all look great and are very quick to make.

twistedstitcher 07-24-2010 11:53 AM

That dog fabric is adorable! My favorite pattern for using large prints is a strippy quilt. Here's a link.

I have to agree, I think this quilt would show off your fabrics nicely! And you definitely can't go wrong with doggie prints! :)

sueisallaboutquilts 07-24-2010 12:39 PM

I just checked that link and the quilts are so cute!!

Warm wishes will look great with the fabrics you all ready have. 3 coordinates with a focal (the cute doggie faces) Another, similar doggie faces to alternate the focal blocks would be the only other fabric I would look for or maybe alternate with a solid black or red or white to really make the doggie faces stand out and give you an area to show off some fancy quilting in the plain blocks.

I like a Take 5 for large scale prints
from the Teachers Pet

wvdek 07-24-2010 02:04 PM

Don't stress over it, keep it simple. Just do a nine patch with sashing. Your fabric is cute.

HOW MUCH IS THAT DOGGIE IN THE WINDOW?---how about ATTIC WINDOWS? dogs in window, sashed w/ the blue &wine, then borders

You are not alone feeling frustrated when you feel things are just not coming together and then you just can't get going. The fabrics you chose are adorable. bright and cheerful. The first thing I thought of also, was the Downy quilt or Quilt For Kids pattern. I just made one of those for a baby shower and it was soooo much fun and so stress free to make. I have seen so many on the board and they are so cute. You have so much wonderful advice above. Good luck, and happy stress free sewing !!

littlehud 07-24-2010 05:49 PM

I love your fabrics. So cute.

jetnica 07-24-2010 06:15 PM

I'd say the downy quilts for kids pattern or a dissapearing 9patch

rmwc2003gal 07-24-2010 06:19 PM

I think a fabric with small bones or dog related items (something like these - http://www.ccq-pa.com/servlet/Detail?no=1333 ) would look really cute in with what you've collected already.

Can't wait to see the pictures of the completed project! :)

weezie 07-24-2010 07:18 PM

My suggestion (sorry if it's useless!) would be to keep looking until you see exactly the pattern you want ... within the bit of time frame that you have left before you need to cut & sew. The fabric is much too cute to use until you're absolutely sure you've found the perfect pattern. I do know there are oodles & oodles of baby quilt patterns available ... for free & for sale.

annette1952 07-24-2010 07:40 PM

I love the fabric! Bright & cheery for the new baby

DebraK 07-24-2010 07:49 PM

I'm thinking you feel pressured. Hang back a bit and wait. No one will think any less of you. It will happen when you are ready.

mom-6 07-24-2010 07:55 PM

I was thinking a larger D9P with the doggie fabrics in the main corner squares and using one of the other two fabrics in the squares that will be cut in half, the other for the center and as sashing between the blocks. Would make a very interesting quilt.

tarib 07-25-2010 06:48 AM

I'm thinking you are right about feeling pressured...I am making a small quilt already for him (bassiet size) so this one may be a Christmas present, gives me a couple more months anyway. Thanks for all the support everyone...will definately post a picture when I'm done

Ha! That's exactly what I thought the second I saw those fabrics. That would be a perfect pattern for those prints.

Holice 07-25-2010 08:34 AM

Your fabric says (to me) simple and not fancy. So why not start with a square of your focus fabric large enough to see the motifs. Surround this with the fabric on the left cut so the writting can be read then alternate blocks with another row around them of one of the fabrics on the left and another on the far left. I don't know the sale of the focus fabric but my gut tells me an 8" square will show it off well. The fabric on the right will unify each of the blocks and then the red and blue will alternate the color.

franie 07-25-2010 08:38 AM

Love the fabrics. No ideas.

GrandmaLiz 07-26-2010 03:58 AM

"Just Can't Cut It" might be a good pattern to use--big squares from the dog print, and smaller pieces from the coordinating ones. It's an easy pattern that looks good finished.
Enjoy!

Ms. Shawn 07-26-2010 05:31 AM

I love the doggie fabric! ;-) Did you ever deside what to do? :XD:

vickimc 07-26-2010 06:15 AM

I agree the Downy quilt for kids, the 4 patch and alternate block. the Alternate block will be great for the doggy fabric and the border. love the fabric.

Go to the Lavender/Lime quilt web site at a store in Chatt. They have a pattern that is easy and perfect for that fabric. You have 8 1/2 inch center cut blocks (perfect for the dogs) then you strip piece the rails using the solids. It's fast (under 3 hours) and easy. They have a book for 12.95. You can also look at the class projects on this pattern and see the quilts.
The bottom/top rails are 4 1/2 inches and the side rails are 6 1/2. You sew the 4 1/2 inch strips together and then cut 2 1/2 strips. Sew on the top and bottom of the 8 1/2 block. Then sew the 6 1/2 rails together, cut 2 1/2 inches strips and sew on the sides. Your blocks are done! Sew together with the block going across and the red going the other way.
My quilt just made this pattern at the board retreat and it was so fast and cute/pretty and really shows off a fabric that you want to showcase.

I love the doggie theme., I would make and easy nonstressful quilt also. What about a 6 1/2 inch focus fabric square with alternate block a of nine patches to make a 6 1/2 square. You would use 2 1/2 inch squares for the nine patches. It will give a go diagonally both way across the quilt. Or you could use a 4 patch of 3 /12 inches for the squares. What ever you do will be loved!

nannya54 07-26-2010 02:26 PM

Love the dog print! Brought a smile as soon as I saw it! You'll find just the right design, I'm sure.

quiltingbea 07-26-2010 02:59 PM

You could do an I Spy quilt with squares and/or sashing. Use any size squares you like and add sashing. You might have to do the math to make it a certain size. They are fast and easy. I make a lot of them. I use 5 inch squares and 2 inch sashing if that helps.

Jackie R 07-26-2010 03:42 PM

I know what you mean. Was in the same predicament for months for a quilt for my little grandson. Bought fabrics as I saw them on sale - too many by far. And finally settled on just a few of the fabrics, knowing what my little guy liked, and found a simple pattern in a book called Bundles of Fun by Karen Snyder, that I happen to have. It's turning out really cute. Am all finished with top and backing but have to go get some batting tomorrow to continue.

But it took a lot, repeat, a lot of mulling over the fabrics and patterns before I could decide. So, keep mulling and something will come to you. Good luck!

tarib 07-26-2010 04:41 PM

jackieR please post a picture when you are finished and send me a message so I will know to look for it

Patched 07-26-2010 05:23 PM

I think to fussy cute the dogs and frame with the other prints in a 1.5 inch strip on all 4 sides. Maybe use one color for sashing, but not frame.

sosewcrazy 07-26-2010 05:30 PM

Thanks for that post. I bought some material for a baby quilt and wasn't sure just what I was going to do with it. Now I know!
