Cat Quilt ?

I want to make my granddaughter a cat quilt. It will be a twin size. So my question is what size blocks should I make. I was thinking of doing a big square and then a 9 or 12 block between. Not sure..
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am a new quilter.

Most mattress tops are standard sizes, but it's your choice on the length of the fall. This can really effect the finished size. Also, there are different types of twin mattresses. You need to get the exact measurements of the mattress top, then decide how far down you want the quilt to hang.
Your general idea of alternating blocks is a good one.

Then consider do you want a twin throw, blanket, or quilt ... for size. Sometime the throw, which is the smallest is the most portable, i.e. for taking to the couch to relax. So, we are back to t he use of the quilt.

Here is one I made years ago. I picky cut each piece of cat fabric. This is still one of my favorite quilts. I also made another with a panel and the cats were about 5 inches big and I put them in center of a wonky shaped blocked, I will get it out and post a picture.

I agree with PaperPrincess. Find out what your size should be and take it from there. If you want to keep it simple with a focus fabric of cats, you might want to look at the pattern Warm Wishes. It is a free pattern.

I used the Warm Wishes for my cat quilt. Worked up very well and really highlighted the kitties.
