I'm curious about the purpose of this "survey" and what your plans for the results are, butterflywing. Since you brusquely refuse to read prior postings about this topic, it seems like you are not interested in what pets board members have and the phrasing of your study objective has little to do with what animals are owned by any of us anyway.

Just because I may own a particular species of animal, does not indicate I "relate" best to that species at all. And what I own now, due to circumstances, does not mean that it is what I would prefer were the circumstances different. It is not necessarily relative to a change in "taste", as you put it. And if you are counting worms, should you not also count the mice I shelter in my garage, or the wild turkeys I feed all winter? What about those who have no companion animals at the moment? I bet plenty of them "relate" fondly to some type of critter.

So, what exactly is the goal of this exercise?

butterflywing 11-19-2008 10:53 AM

pocoellie...

do you simply like them or are they your companions? how many of each?

tell, tell.

i reason i didn't want to read the last pet post was that some animals were gone and some were added. i'm really just doing this out of curiosity, because so many quilters have chosen their pets as their avatars, indicating a special bonding. yes, some people love their pet worms and i have them listed in the 'survey'. barbsbus has 2000 worms.i also have a listing for 1 snake, 25 cattle, fish, a turtle and quiltykitty is claiming all the wild things of the world as being dear to her.

my intention was never to be serious. this was never meant to be a treatise on the subject of "quilters and their animal friends". i thought it would be fun and allow everyone to share their love of their animals with others who love their animals.

if you have taken it in any other way, i sincerely apologize.

by the way, yes, the turkeys you feed are certainly your pets. just because they don't live in your house doesn't matter. i also feed all the wild birds that come to my feeders and know some of them by name. they are surely my pets. you are certainly invited to share with us all anything you'd like to about your animal 'friends'. goats and horses don't live indoors indoors either. and shelter animals didn't cost any money. anything you care about and love is your pet. please let me know what your favorites are.

i have no plans for the results. should i have? what in the world would they be?

I have a Chihuahua named Tink she is 15 years old. She loves the one she is with at the time,My husband or myself. We also have a siamese mix named simmy,His brother mesey died in 2004. They were litter mates born in 1992. Which makes him 16 and still going strong. We have a 180 Gal. freshwater aquarium which we both love. Lot of fish.
I love all animals have been owned by many. But I have had 3 true animal friends That owned me and I miss all three as much as I would a real person that I loved. My Horse Dixie....She was a king bred working cow horse. I She was 16 years old when I had to put her down because of Liver failure. She was 15 1/2 hands high.
My Germanshep Tara..... She was the most gentlest big dog I have ever knew. Germanshep are suspose to be nervous. Not this dog, loved kids but was very protective of me.
My Standard Poodle Bella..... The most intelligent animal I have ever been owned by. Lost her to lyphnthomic Cancer. This past July 1 year ago She was 14. That Big soft curly head and ears, listen to me without a groan,or a comment just looked at me like she knew everything I was crying, venting or just talking about.
I will have to have another when Tink the Chihuahua finally leaves us. But dont know yet which I want. I prefer Dogs, Big ones but now that I am now longer a spring chicken, it will probably be a little one.
Tink is like our baby, We treat her so.

I have a newfoundland that thinks he is a lap dog - - UGH. His name is Duncan for Duncan McCleod (of Highlander fame). I have had 4 dogs and 2 cats in the past. Don't know if you want to count them:

Sammy Hagar Dawg - schauzer mix
Steeler - (for the Pittsburgh STeelers) - lab/rott mix
Skippy - shepherd mix
Sophie - cocker

Precious - grey tabby
Baby - orange tabby

Much prefer Dogs to cats. I had cats before I got dogs and wouldn't go back. I leave the cat loving to my best friends. :)

Right now I have two dogs, each are 4 yrs old. The Sheltie is named buttons and the schnauzer's name is Sam. Sam is a terrorist, into everything, we had to put an electric fence around the back to keep him in. He killed all the neighbor lady's chickens. But he also is a sweetie. We have decided after these two dogs go, we will be dogless for a while.

bearpaw 11-20-2008 04:43 AM

Three cats here. One is the mother, the other two are are sons. We took her in from a neighbor that was neglecting her and she was pregnant. Her name is Trixie and the boys are Slim and Bert. All three are in my avatar.

babeegirl 11-20-2008 04:45 AM

Today the dog is definitely favored over the cat. I put out a pound of hamburger by the kitchen sink to thaw yesterday morning. My fiance comes home at noon, so he was going to put it in the fridge. I get a call around noon asking what did I do with the hamburger. "Nothing says me, it's by the coffee pot"...no it's not...yes it is...umm no it's NOT. Ok, well, look around, there's only one culprit that had access to the kitchen, see if you can find it. Look, look, look, all over the house, upstairs? nope..under the couch? nope...downstairs maybe? goes and looks downstairs...bingo! the little stinker drug that frozen pound of hamburger all the way downstairs and hid it behind my fabric stacker! he didnt tear the freezer bag open, he just simply hid it in a place that in a few days would cause a major stink! needless to say, he spent the evening in the no no box. (His cage).

i have also had three special 'friends' that were a major part of my family. it always hurt me that there were only two children so the pets filled in. my closest friends were fletcher,a fatty, ichabod, a sweetie, and and tenzing, my own true love. they are buried in my backyard and they still make me cry to think about them. so i understand how you feel. this will probably be my last pet because another one would likely outlive me and because i can't take care of them as well anymore. and i'll miss them all.

Margie 11-21-2008 11:42 AM

I have a dog. Two year old golden retriever named Dublin. I keep asking my hubby for a puppy....he keeps saying NOOOOOOOOOOOO. We have always had dogs....this is our first golden. We always had cocker spaniels before. I will continue to work on the puppy lol.

I have 3 dogs (bichon, poodle, chinese crested), 2 cats (sphynx), and a ferret. Currently. This count could change at anytime without warning. Do you want me to count the fosters weve had in/out of our house in the last 2 years?

quiltsRfun 11-21-2008 01:40 PM

Currently we have two dogs--a beagle and a beagle/Jack Russel mix. Both are rescue dogs. We've always had dogs not cats. Nothing against cats,we just happen to like dogs. In the past we had a mutt and another beagle.

glorcour 11-22-2008 06:02 AM

Hi
We have a rescued Bearded Collie named Bernie now 10 years old - a delightful companion dog who is also a Canadian Champion. We love the character and playfulness of this guy who also makes us walk at least twice a day whatever the weather.

I keep seeing the word "avitar" being used in this site. Am I the only person who has no idea what that means? I even tried to look it up in the dictionary with no results lol. I feel dumb, but it is driving me crazy!! What does it mean???

Bevanger 11-22-2008 07:36 AM

your so very welcome. if you want one go to MY PROFILE.... go to bottom

Margie 11-22-2008 07:49 AM

ACTUALLY, I find this "survey" interesting. Many times I have thought that "cats and quilting" seemed to go together because so many people I know who quilt seem to have cats. I felt "out of the loop" in a way because I have only ever owned dogs. I dont dislike cats, I was just never raised with them and have no idea how to care for them(also a litter box in the house doesnt appeal to me lol) However, I think cats are very beautiful and enjoy looking at them.

I am glad to know that many seem to have dogs and other animals as well. I think it is just for fun and anyone who doesnt care to say what they have should not.

Margie...btw we live in PA where we are riff with deer and also have turkeys and bunnies. I feed the deer from Christmas eve until springtime. Sometimes we have as many as 20 deer at one time in the yard.

JANNY 11-22-2008 08:03 AM

Well, we have an RV and had our little "Muffin"dog. She was 16 when finally had to go to Doggie Heaven. We decided then, no more dogs while traveling. Then a stray cat began to hang around our yard.
we finally adopted him, (or should I say, he adopted us). We said he was "Muffin' reincarnated, because we wern't going to get another dog, so what appeared, but a cat. He is a beautiful Norwegian Forest cat. Doesn't travel with us because he loves to be outside too much for the confines of a motorhome. However, we also have a few desert tortoises who live in our back yard. They hibernate all winter, so are very low maintanence for those who like to travel. Hard to say what is the favorite, but probably a dog would be # 1.

stitchinMamaw 11-22-2008 09:45 AM

Margie I would like to live near you . I love to see the deer . There are some around my area , but not in my yard . I love wildlife ! We saw a fox about a year ago , he was pretty .

Butterflywing don't pay attention to the other one ! Don't stop this is fun ! I only have a dog , love cats but am allergic ! I like seeing everyone's pets . Has there been any horses yet ? Annie

Hi Margie

Actually the correct spelling is AVATAR and it means the following from dictionary.com Hope this helps

–noun 1. Hindu Mythology. the descent of a deity to the earth in an incarnate form or some manifest shape; the incarnation of a god.
2. an embodiment or personification, as of a principle, attitude, or view of life.
3. Computers. a graphical image that represents a person, as on the Internet.

2manyprojects 11-24-2008 05:25 AM

I have a dog and 3 cats...the cats are the only helpers when I sew though. They are so excited when I enter my sewing room...they find a place to nap (in the way, of course) and zone out! :?

redrummy 11-24-2008 08:00 AM

I have a dog-lab-wolf-rot mix and a tiger cat. I have always loved cats, wanted an inside one growing up but dad only allowed outside ones. I have had in the past, a guinea pig, bunny, turtle, fish. my favorite thing to watch is the fish tank, with all the fish in it. But a space hog I don't have room for right now!!!!

Am I slow, or what?? Why would anyone's feelings be hurt? All they have to do it click off. For myself, I'm afraid the only "pets" I have are the dust bunnies that accumulate under the furniture. But I enjoy reading about how others relate to their pets.

stitchinMamaw 11-25-2008 10:05 AM

There was another thread that someone had the same thing to say . But I can't find it now . Maybe they are just having a " grumpy day " lol . I've had a couple get smart with me , not mentioning any names . :!: I was really insulted . I didn't join in to any threads for a couple of weeks .

This is very much fun for me  . I am an animal lover . Except for snakes . EWWWW. I love the pics .

i can't believe i'm seeing this again! i thought it was gone forever.

DeneK 04-21-2011 02:24 PM

I am glad it was not gone forever... We have lots of new people every day and maybe some of those love their pets as much as I do. My dogs make my life happier every day. If you don't care for animals, just don't read a thread that is about cats and dogs. Leave it for those of us who enjoy that sort of thing.

butterflywing 04-21-2011 04:15 PM

if you read from the beginning, you'll notice that i'm the one that started this thread. i think it's funny that after all this time, it's been picked up again.
