almost everybody here has a pet. some cats, some dogs, some horses, some chickens.

i'm conducting a 6-week survey to find out which animal quilters relate best to.

if you have a pet, please post on this thread for all the world to see. we may all be surprised at what we find out about each other.

i have one plain old cat. age 20. half abyssinian, half street cat. from the shelter. she's beginning to fail. i guess that's why i'm thinking of this. her brother died at 15. these are cats #8 and 9 that i can remember. i won't go thru all the names or we'll be here forever. please do the same.

what do you think will be the winner? goldfish?

just checked and it ends december 30th. whoops! sorry. i will count after xmas and report back. remember.....
6 weks only!

maggiebooboo 11-18-2008 08:44 AM

I have a cat that is about 1 1/2 years old. He's a Russian Blue mix. He looks like a Russian Blue, but I got him from a rescue, so I'm pretty sure he isn't a purebread. His name is Archie. He was found in a sack in the river with the rest of his litter. Only two of them survived. Archie is a pain But I love him anyway.

You may want to check out the seventy-five pages on this topic posted here:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/705/1020.page

Besides cats and dogs, there are many other companions and their photos.

butterflywing 11-18-2008 08:57 AM

hey moonpi,

don't ruin my day of fun. those are all cute animal friends, but this is a really important survey. students from all over the world will study the results long after we're gone. you have to take it seriously. (my tongue is in my cheek).

by the way, do you have a companion? i mean the kind with fins, fur or feathers?

barbsbus 11-18-2008 09:04 AM

I have a dog and cat and are you rerady for this? A worm farm, probably 2000 of the little critters. I havest the worm castings for my garden and house plants. Also make some cheer up cards to send to pelple who need cheering up.

beachlady 11-18-2008 09:15 AM

My favorite is my 1 year old Goldendoodle named Brewster. He is a miniature and weighs about 40 lbs. and thinks he is a lap dog!!

But then there are my two parrots; one an Africian Grey and one a Senegal parrot. Oliver the Grey has a vocabulary of over 1000 (yes 1000) words and says things appropriate to the situation. Once I was softly discussing with DH that is was Wednesday and the Sunday paper was still next to his chair! When I got done Oliver said (in DH's voice) "Aw, shut-up!" Of course we both lost it and I picked up the paper for the recycling pile!!! Oliver answers the phone when it rings and will say "telephone" to anyone who will listen. When I am on the phone conducting business he is in the background saying "Hi, this is..... blah, blah, blah. Ok goodbye and thankyou." Both birds are in my sewing room, so keep me company and talk to me. Brewster does not phase them at all - in fact he gets in their cages to eat their food and they get down and peck him on the head and he never even looks up. We do have a gate to the room, so he only gets in there when supervised.

I have had plenty of other pets over the years, cats, rabbits, newts, hamsters etc. That's what you do when you have kids!

it would sure cheer me up - i would pee my pants laughing!

zyxquilts 11-18-2008 10:02 AM

I have zzyzx the cat. She's 16.5 yrs old, marmalade & white (see avatar), American medium hair (heeheehee) and I adopted her from the pound. Before her, I had a lab/shepherd mix named Jensen. Yes, my dog was named after a car (Jensen Healy) and my cat is named after a road (Zzyzx Road, off the I-15 between Barstow & Las Vegas). I couldn't pick a favorite, but I would say that the cat is lower maintenance.

mommaB 11-18-2008 10:12 AM

I currently have a big dog. If I lived in the country, I would also have cats. Had them in the city..DO NOT like cat box!!! And the one cat didn't like it much either   And the dog likes to eat cats..to the tune of $250 to get poor old Peanut's hind quarters stitched up..he lives with my daughter now!! I've also had horses, sheep, chickens, rabbits, ducks, gerbils, mice, chameleons and fish. :!: As far as a quilting assistant..I think I prefer a dog.

butterflywing 11-18-2008 10:22 AM

it's interesting to know where we were before and where we are now. our animal tastes change as our circumstances do.

as long as you all remember that it's what you have now that counts, then it's fun to hear about the others. heartbreaks and all.

Knot Sew 11-18-2008 10:44 AM

I have had lots of dogs and cats...each one special. Right now I have Lulu a mixed breed from Poreto Rico. and Mr Murphy a black cat. Come bed time they are there. Mr Murphy likes to cuddle with just his head poking out...he likes warm :D

vicki reno 11-18-2008 10:51 AM

We have a 2 year old yellow lab named Sadie. If you think of all the kooky traits that labs have, then you will know exactly what I mean when I say she has a few screws loose. She has just started carrying her bowl around with her. You an feed her and when she is done, she will pick it up and bring it to you as if to say that she wants 2nds :!:  She loves to sit behind my husbands desk chair and keep an eye out on the front yard just in case a squirrel has the nerve to climb a tree in our yard!

bearisgray 11-18-2008 11:37 AM

Right now I like cats better.

Of the three most recent, Miss Pook was the sweetest. She would like to be held against my shoulder to be petted and didn't dig in with her claws. She also liked to be brushed. She was a skittery little thing.

Twink was a very handsome white shorthair. But he peed all over everything. I don't even know how he got his hind end situated for some of the stuff I've found. I miss him, but not that.

Bear is a shaggy gray. He is an indoor-outdoor cat. He's the only one left now. He's on medication and getting thinner.

I didn't deliberately go after any of them. For one reason or another, I took them in.

I truly loved my Mom's Babe cat. I visited to see the cat almost as much as to see Mom.

The way I feel right this minute, I don't think I'll get another animal when Bear goes.

CissyQuilts 11-18-2008 11:47 AM

We have 3 dogs and 1 snake. :D I would have several cats too, but dh and ds are allergic. :(

Barbm 11-18-2008 01:02 PM

we have a beagle and 2 pugs. pug # 2 is a rescue.

Trixie- beagle is a pain, but the brown eyes melt you.
Crouton- pug#1 is #1 in my book, she's 10 1/2 and wearing down a bit. Love her to pieces!
Spencer- pug#2 is daughter's. named after Jimmy Spencer, NASCAR driver (my fav when he was driving). Has tons of personality and good looks, would have made a fantastic show dog.

Crouton and Trixie try to share the computer chair with you so they are a bit of hogs, but they do keep you warm. Sewing companion, they all like to lay in their beds and sleep nearby.

We have a german shepherd / border collie mix . He will be 10 years old in December . Very lovable . Likes to lay at my feet while I'm sewing . Can't have cats due to allergies ! But I love siamese cats , just beautiful . Annie .

sandpat 11-18-2008 04:35 PM

Mine are in the other post too., but I currently have 10 cats, 1 dog and 25 head of Angus cattle and I'm shopping for a horse or 2.

Elizabeth A. 11-18-2008 04:50 PM

I am not a dog person. I do not like being licked, and I do not like the way they smell. My husband and daughter feel differently, but you said QUILT people. I have tried so hard to like them, to want one, but everytime I end up back here.

I have Three cats: one boy two girls

Sunny age 4 a Male Maine Coon (born under the house has medical issues)
Tiny age 3 only about 8 pounds Grey, Peach and White (abandoned at birth and left to die - couldn't stand hearing her cry so after two hours we took her in, she was so little and cold!)
Kitty age 8 SPCA adoption saved from death row, abused something terrible before we adopted her -SUPER fat because of her fear of not getting another meal (even though she's had regular meals for 7 years) Classic Calico

Two Birds
Pebbles age 7 Meyer Parrot assumed male
Sam age 6 Pacific Parrotlet male

Awww, gee now I feel sad I had no idea my bird babies were getting up there.

I have also raised tree frogs but after the tank broke...

Oh and like 40 some Golden Long Fin Daino's (tropical fish) all raised from eggs age 1 year
1 Creamsicle Molly age 1 year live birth - owned her mother. Female
1 oddly friendly and responsive Fighting Fish age 1 1/2 years. Male

butterflywing 11-18-2008 04:56 PM

i'm really impressed with 42 tropical fish in the "other" category, but barbsbus still has you beat with 2000 worms. teehee.

Elizabeth A. 11-18-2008 05:00 PM

Oh I forgot to Autocats they're a cross between a catfish and a sucker fish, I have no clue how old they are, about 6 months I'd guess, they came to me by way of a friend of my sisters.

The tank needs so little care it seems to nearly just exist on it's own. We've decided no more baby fish (Thankgoodness) so we just let 'em be.

Jim's Gem 11-18-2008 05:12 PM

I currently have 3 labroadors, all female. 2 white and one black, Annapurna, Denali and Mauna Kea. Anna and Nali are sisters, Nali is the black one, Kea is Anna's, pup, they are 10 1/2 and 6.
I also have one red eared slider turtle, about 5 in in diameter, one 3" goldfish, and in another tank, 4 large bala sharks, 3 large angelfish, 4 large clown loaches, 5 zebra danios, 6 cardinal tetra's, 3 albino catfish, 3 other catfish, a very large (8") Pleco, a smaller candy stripe pleco (5") 8 rummynose tetra's, 5 ghost glass cats, 2 bosemani rainbow, 1 red rainbow, 2 austrailian rainbows, 2 axelrodi rainbows, 1 turquoise rainbow, 2 diamond tetras, 2 congo tetra's, a large 7" golden chinese alge eater, 2 small chinese alge eaters, and I'm not sure what else!!! :) :) (it is a 100 gal freshwater tank)

Oops I forgot my 3 Denisoni Barb's

AkAngel 11-18-2008 06:09 PM

We currently have 3 dogs Buddy is 12yr. Cardigan Corgi, Lizzie almost 10 is a miniature Schnauzer and Clover is 7month King Charles Cavalier Spaniel.
We also have 3 cats, Mercy and Cuddles are Japanese Bobtails 11 years old
and Misty is 1 year Calico we adopted from the shelter just before Christmas last year. As far as choosing a favorite I don't think I can they are all pretty special.
I won't even begin to try to name the zoo we've had over the last 30 years except to say its included most everything except reptiles or spiders, I don't allow those in my house under any circumstance!!

well i currently have one dog and one cat. Dog named Precious my daughter brought to me from Memphis TN to Odessa, TX because she lived in an apartment and it didn't have a yard to run and play in and I do. She was 10 months old when my daughter brought her to me, she just turned 4 years old June 2008. She is half maltese and half pickinese
(spelled wrong i'm sue). My cat is a calico, somebody must have dumped her in the neighborhood because early one morning when i stepped out the front door to get the paper, here was this little skinny - hungry and homeless kitten just meowing, so of course i brought her in and fed her some dog food and milk, she ate that and half of my grilled cheese sandwich for lunch before i could get to wal mart and get the necessary things for a cat. Her name is Callie and she weighs 14 pounds and she was 3 years old June 2008. By the way, Precious weighs 9 lbs. They love each other and play together so so good and Callie the cat even cleans Precious the dog.

justquiltin' 11-18-2008 06:38 PM

One mix-breed dog, Cosi (after Cosima Wagner, Richard Wagner's wife and Franz Liszt's daughter.)
One housecat, JD.

Janstar 11-18-2008 08:15 PM

Just have my boys in my avatar, Chonzer and Quigley, both 2 years old.

so....up until now we have dogs in the lead (except for 'other'. cats have 22 but dogs lead with 29. HOWEVER if we start to count 'other' we have to take into consideration 2000 worms. yes, you heard right. see the post from barbsbus.

if you don't hear from me on a regular basis don't worry. big sister will be watching you and keeping track as we go. in the meantime, keep posting, ladies (and men).

butterflywing 11-18-2008 08:29 PM

i don't know what happened there. dogs in the lead followed by cats. 29 to 22. still too close to call. other is still, how can i say this, a riot! 2000 worms has to help take the lead. thanks, barbsbus.

if you don't hear from me on a regular basis, fear not. big sister will be watching you. i'll still be keeping track and will report in and laughing away.
as promised, i'll give counts from time to time and at the end of the 6 weeks which will be december 30. didn't plan this too well, did i? so right after the new year there will be a final count and maybe a surprise late xmas gift for the weirdest pet currently residing with a quilter on this board. so if you haven't got a pet, quick, go get one. fur, fins, feather or scales. as long as you love it.

ScubaK 11-18-2008 09:53 PM

I got a Jack Russell about 4yrs ago...
and a betta fish for the Jack Russell
My fish died about 4months ago...his name was Jerry and I cried, Really I did...
We also adopted a pomerainian in August of 07 which he was about 8months old. Had to potty train but he is nothing but a bucket of love and the Jack Russell and the Pomerainian play all day...They go round and round...
I would love to have a cat to sleep on the bed with me but that isn't going to happen with these two.
I am afraid the JR would kill it....

quiltykitty 11-18-2008 10:10 PM

We have one cat. But I claim all the birds, butterflies, turtles, rabbits, squirrels, and insects in our yards as MINE. And I can't forget all those Koi fish in our ponds.

Brenda Retzlaff 11-18-2008 11:28 PM

I have 2 cats. Both were adopted from an abused animal shelter. Annie is all black...looks like a panther. JJ is grey & White. He's a loveable, darling cat who "talks" all the time. They are both 5 years old.

Both kitties are avid quilters. I lay my quilt blocks out on the floor and they rearrange them for me. Most of the time they do a pretty good job.

PrettyKitty 11-19-2008 01:07 AM

I like dogs, but am a major cat person. I have two boy cats, they are quarter Bengal, three quarter moggie. They are 1.5 yrs old and are crazy kitties and I love them dearly. Kitchen and Satchmo are their names.

minstrel 11-19-2008 03:57 AM

Well, as far as quilting goes, our golden retriever is my companion, but we also have 3 horses, 2 goats, 2 guinea pigs and a couple of fish. I think mostly the dog's contribution is HAIR! But she's a sweetie. 2 years old and finally settling down a bit so she can sit with me in my quilting room for longer than 5 minutes! She loves to come in and set her head on my lap because of course, I'm not paying enough attention to her when I'm quilting!

pocoellie 11-19-2008 06:32 AM

I'm a dog and horse person

sewjoyce 11-19-2008 06:38 AM

I currently have one cat -- a 13 lb. 5 yr. old Himalayan named Emile by his previous owner. I found him at the Humane Society and we usually call him "Little Mr." as he's always in trouble....but not for long

Quilt4u 11-19-2008 06:44 AM

My two Jack Russells. I love the two different personalaties (?) they have. One is so layed back you would not think she was a Jack Russell. The male is well behaived and is the jummper and a Mama's boy. He just loves to sew with me.

sandybeach 11-19-2008 08:06 AM

I have had cats and dogs. Loved my mixed lab/shepard combo to bits.

Right now I have three cats. Powder (a champaign color Tonkinese), she is 12.5 years old. Koko (you guessed it, a Seal Point Siamese), he is 3.5 years old. And the baby, Samantha (Sammy) (a Lynx Point Siamese), she is 3.0 years old.

Powder was a free cat from a private family, Koko I actually paid $100 for because you really can't find Seal Point Siamese at the shelter, and Sammy was a shelter cat.

Sammy has a terrible habit of attacking Powder. At first it was to get Powder to play, but Powder doesn't play, so she reacted by hissing and spitting. Now Sammy does it just to annoy her.

Powder isn't very friendly. She bites, even me.

Koko is my favorite. He loves me to death, is nice to everyone, eats anything that doesn't eat him first, always uses the cat box and even comes when I call "Treat". (They are allowed to go out during the day.)

Sammy is a sweety when she wants to be. She plays fetch with a little ball. But she attacks Powder, won't come when I call, only eats the VERY EXPENSIVE cat food In fact, if she thinks I am going to bring her in for the night, she shimmies up the tree and jumps on the roof. I even went up on the roof a couple times and brought her back, but now she jumps back into the tree and waits for me to get off the roof, then jumps back on the roof.

stitchinMamaw 11-19-2008 08:15 AM

Sandybeach I love siamese cats . I had 3 seal points years ago . Most lovable cats . I have seen the Tonkinese , but do you have a pic of the lynx point ? I don't think I've heard of that one . Annie
