Since I am moving in a month, my home is pretty torn up. Half-packed boxes, donation piles, and just general stuff everywhere.
So I am trying to decide, what project would be best suited to work on while in this mess and decided to dig out my hexie UFO. Portable, no machine needed.

My question is, what do you like to work on to keep sane when things go topsy-turvy??

mollymct 07-12-2011 12:26 PM

I'm likely to knit in this type of situation...something easy like hats that I can stash in a little bag and easily keep up with. I love your hexie quilt!! I haven't gotten past squares :) and I'm not confident about handpiecing!

alikat110 07-12-2011 12:33 PM

Wasn't aware there was such a thing as a chaos proof project!

texpat45 07-12-2011 12:33 PM

Hand embroidery. I have pillowcase sets, dishtowel sets in my stash plus I have scraps for crazy quilt motifs going as my forever project. I used to make yo-yos but burned out doing those.

Ditto. :)

But I do work on my GFG

lots2do 07-12-2011 12:36 PM

Currently, I knit washcloths out of pretty varigated yarn.

blueangel 07-12-2011 12:48 PM

I crochet.

QuiltnNan 07-12-2011 01:07 PM

i usually work on a bowl of ice cream

katinkaB 07-12-2011 01:25 PM

Brilliant idea!

katinkaB 07-12-2011 01:26 PM

Yo-Yos - great! Why didn't I think of that. Haven't done them for ages, so no burn-out problem here.

katinkaB 07-12-2011 01:28 PM

So quite a few of you are cheating with crafty things other than knitting! Me, too. Been knitting quite few socks recently.

Common thing seems to be small and hand work.

quiltingcandy 07-12-2011 01:47 PM

I usually crochet scarfs for my daughter, but also have a hand quilting project I keep in a sewing basket that is always ready.

SparkMonkey 07-12-2011 02:30 PM

Another sock knitter here--generally just brainless stockinette (I use pretty yarn to keep it interesting). Most of my socks need to be washed right off the needles, because they go to work with me and I work in a very grubby, dusty environment.

No kind of sewing is chaos-proof for me. Needles and thimbles are too easily lost, and it requires a certain amount of "settling" when I go to work on it. It's hard for me to pick up and put down in odd moments the way I can with knitting.

What is a GFG?

That's what I'm doing-except crochet.

The best suggestion yet. I"m with you there.

I do the hand-sewing part of quilt bindings.

True confession: I'm a big procrastinator. I always seem to have a quilt or two lying around that is complete except for the hand-sewn side of the binding.

Granny Quilter 07-12-2011 05:03 PM

Thank you

I try to keep a piece of hand work ready to carry wherever I go or have a few minutes to just sit. That is a wonderful on to work on.

Baysidegal 07-13-2011 03:33 AM

Crochet or embrodery works for me.

Me, too - have done them for years and they are always in need for one thing or other. Crochet.

judi wess 07-13-2011 03:47 AM

Think SparkMonkey and I are clones of each other. Maybe I'm not as strange as I think I am.
Small doable projects, mostly handwork, applique, knitting socks and they need to be useful.

Patti Mahoney 07-13-2011 03:52 AM

I used to cross stitch, make doilies from crochet but now I'm working on a hand stitched hexagon quilt. I've been working on it for 2 years. I'm taking a class now with Mimi Dietrich to learn applique. I'll always have something to carry along no matter where I'm going or what I'm doing. I love it!

Jo Mama 07-13-2011 04:06 AM

I either crochet or embroider quilt blocks for a future quilt. Jack Dempsey company has lots of them to embroider.

the old one 07-13-2011 04:11 AM

Sometimes I hand quilt table runners and place mats, or crochet wash cloths, a project with a short work time, and a usable finished piece. Seems to settle me, somehow. piecefully, the old one

humbird 07-13-2011 04:31 AM

I always have a bag of hexies going, but must admit, if the "chaos" gets TOO bad, I'd go for the bowl of ice cream idea!!

KathyKat 07-13-2011 05:06 AM

Your plan to work on the GFG is good and it looks like it will be gorgeous!!

scrapbeagle 07-13-2011 05:27 AM

I crochet or cross-stitch.

hand smocking for little girls' dresses

jhoward 07-13-2011 05:54 AM

How about chocolate and had hand embroidery; dish towels.

GV09 07-13-2011 06:02 AM

Hand embroidery work for me ... but with chocolates!
Should quilting by hand ... LOL!

I relate to the bowl of ice cream. When things are topsy turvy for me to have a quilting project going on makes things worse. I just have to put everything away and focus on things besides quilting.

That's about how old my hexie project is. Just like a good wine...

I always wanted to try smocking. It looks just so very beautiful. There is a great blog by a lady who hand dyes fabrics and then smocks or pleats them to make jewelry:

Need to learn in a quite moment, though.
