I make anywhere between 10 and 20 lap quilts for the VA nursing home in my area each year. My sister makes draperies for an interior designer and she gives me left over fabric the customer does not want. I cut the smaller pieces into 8 inch squares and cut up old jeans into 8 inch squares for the patchwork. I use the larger pieces of fabric for backing. These are fairly heavy so I do not use batting. I do birth these then stitch in the ditch to hold together and stitch around the edges..

I made 14 quilt tops....They are then quilted by a group that quilts all the tops we make...

I didn't do any charity quilts last year, however, when I belonged to a quilt guild, I would make 5-6 quilts a year with about half using the birthing method.

This past year the heartstrings group on the 'net had a 365 block challenge. I completed this and undertook to send my blocks in as tops rather than single blocks. I still have some sets of blocks to put together because 2 local sewers decided to make blocks for me as well. I donated a king single sized quilt for a raffle and a couple of other finished quilts to a local cause. Heartstrings is a great group because they accept donations from single string blocks to finished quilts.

I probably average 2 quilts to charity a month, sometimes more, sometimes less. It depends on the needs I hear of and my physical ability to work at my quilt making. :) As a rule, I do everything on the machine and that includes a separate binding. I have only used the birthing method one or two times.

I make 10-15 quilts a year for 2 organizations. All of my quilts have a binding, the quilt will last longer and be more sturdy. I make them all by machine including binding, start to finish.

Double fold edges, I did a crib quilt for my GGD that way. I was able to finish it in no time at all considering I had only 1/2 hour to finish it before having to catch a ride with my son to see my Grand-daughter. I work well under pressure, lol.

I think I only did one quilt, but quite a few premie afghans. Just finished one and have another on the needles. I would like to do more quilts. I used to do them with a church quilting group, but left that church. I applaud all those who share their "gifts".

Do you also do regular quilting to the body of the quilt after turning and topstitching the edge? If so, how do you baste the layers together? Basting stitches, pins??? Thank you.
