charity: what organizations do you donate to?

please share what organizations you donate quilts (or other crafted items) to.

i'd love to read about the good being done by quilters.
i think it could make for an awesome thread of heartwarming information.

thanks in advance.

I donate to Quilt for Kids.

Grandma Bonnie 03-10-2014 06:18 PM

Quilts for Kids is the only charity I've made quilts for so far.

Our group will be making feminine hygiene kits for "Days For Girls." Here's the link... http://www.daysforgirls.org/ In Africa, there isn't anything to use for feminine hygiene. They're using leaves and whatever else they can find. So the girls can't go to school during that time. And being unable to get an education makes matters worse. You can get some supplies free (including the PUL fabric) for your group, by contacting your area rep.

I make quilts for Project Linus and our local guild's charity quilts. I have given to other places, but my favorite is the Bible Camp quilt auction in my home community.

I made a few quilts for QFK, but I decided to save the mailing expense and donate to local groups instead. I belong to 3 guilds and a sewing group at the LQS, and all of them collect quilts for various purposes, including hospice, local military leaving for deployment, abused women's shelters, hospitals, and children in need. Sometimes I just do the longarming for the quilts, and other times I make the whole quilt. I don't feel that I do enough, however. One guild member makes around 100 quilts per year for children in need, and they are all very nice quilts and most are large enough for a teen's bed. Another member quilts them for her. I don't know how they do it.

Sadie's Dream For A Cure and local groups.

PlanoDebbie 03-10-2014 08:08 PM

I've donated several to Project Linus. Our local group has given out over 1200 quilts each year for Snowball Express. Children who have lost a parent in the military are invited to this free event. Every child goes home with a quilt.

I've also donated a few quilts to my daughter's High School band that sold for a nice amount of money to help with band expenses.

I prefer to keep my donations locally.

Quiltaddict 03-10-2014 08:50 PM

I make quilts for Camp Reach 4 the Sky which is a summer camp for kids with cancer.

AliKat 03-10-2014 09:16 PM

My quilt guild makes quilts for AASK -Aid to Adoption of Special [needs] Kids. This is an organization that helps these special kids who are in foster care. In foster care the kids can lose everything they have: toys, books, cherished items, etc. However, they keep the quilts. I know because on of the ladies I taught quilting to had an AASK 20+ year old Down's syndrome in her home - she was her caretaker.

The church based quilt group makes quilts for a lot of organizations. Each year the organizations put in their requests and we try to [and usually do] fill their requests. One year we had 18 organizations. The Saturday before the Tuesday Distribution night the church sanctuary is decorated with a whole lot of quilts, even if many are folded. It is awesome.

Another church group I used to belong to made prayer quilts.

I prefer to donate locally, so I checked into QFK and PL awhile back, but neither has a local chapter that's close enough for me to arrange transportation.

Instead, I donate to several local organizations, especially those that help provide Christmas for needy kids. Sometimes I donate a quilt or other handmade item for a raffle or door prize at a fundraising event, and other times I donate toys or money or whatever the organization requests. :)

We have our own charity here in Poland and we give to those around us. Today we give out food (food bank) and will include some lap quilts as I have a lady who makes them for us (the lady is in AZ).

libby2595 03-11-2014 02:40 AM

you guys are some awesome people!
i love reading what the organizations accomplish.

right now, being that we're going to relocate, i'm keeping all of my crafting small... i'm currently only making blankets for our local no-kill animal shelter.

please keep the list growing! this is so awesome!

Juliebelle 03-11-2014 03:07 AM

I do project Linus, last year I made 11 and I hope to exceed that this year.

scrapinmema 03-11-2014 03:18 AM

I make quilts for our Church missions auction, new born at one of our hospitals and QOV.

mpspeedy2 03-11-2014 03:49 AM

I mostly make quilts for our local Linus Chapter. I average 21 each month. Our local chapter takes in and distributes at least 600 each month. Several months ago we had 900 for that month. I also make Princess Pillowcase Dresses. It is a little dress based on a pillowcase. They get sent mostly to little girls in tropical islands that would otherwise be naked. It helps keep them from being molested.

toverly 03-11-2014 04:12 AM

Our Guild give to Habitat for Humanity, our local Hospital's neonatal department, Meals on Wheels (placemats), and Children's Home Society which takes care of displaced children in the system. Someone has recently started collecting cutting scraps for dogbeds for the Animal Shelter.

Kathy T. 03-11-2014 04:38 AM

I am a member of the Sunshine On-line Quilt Guild that makes quilts for Wrap-a-Smile (WAS) and Quilts Beyond Borders (QBB) – we always welcome new members! WAS sends quilts on medical trips where the children are having cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries and QBB sends quilts to children in need around the world and here in the US.

Here locally, I am a member of a Quilts of Valor group and occasionally make quilts for Project Linus and pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer (for children). I am retired and this is my reward for years of working hard - I get to play with fabric a lot!

I make and donate lap throw quilts to the Riverside Rehabilitation Center/Nursing Home. I make and donate baby quilts to Ronald McDonald House and also to Rachel's House, a temporary home for young unwed mothers.

Onebyone 03-11-2014 05:09 AM

The local Children's Hospital get more donated handmade items then they can use so my guild is giving to a group The Call. It helps foster children. We stopped giving quilts to the Red Cross when a member found a closet full of donated quilts at the office that were years old and was told something had to be done about the blankets, they were taking up too much room. !

carolstickelmaier 03-11-2014 05:22 AM

Mine go to St Jude and local charities. Last year was over 37 quilts to St Jude and I lost count to the local charities. One little hint I might add. The older kids and teens seem to get left out. I know it is much more expensive and takes much longer to make but they too would love to receive a quilt. Lap quilts go to our local home bound citizens when the annual food baskets are delivered. I do if I can send fabric, $ when I see a board member requesting and I have the items on hand or enough extra $ to give. I don't always have a lot but figure I still have more than a lot of people do. It pleases me to help others. Makes me feel good.Carol

MamaHen 03-11-2014 05:41 AM

I make baby quilts for the local Pregnancy Crises Center.

reginalovesfabric 03-11-2014 06:11 AM

I make quilts for people that lose their homes due to fire, hurricanes etc. I also have friend that is a Nun and she loves to pass out quilts around the holidays to the needy. To date I have donated 350 pillowcases to different organizations. I love to make pillowcases.

libby2595 03-11-2014 06:56 AM

i'm loving this conversation!!

meyert 03-11-2014 07:31 AM

I started with Quilts for Kids, and I really happy that I started. I know I have to pay shipping because I don't have a local chapter.. but they send me the fabric at NO charge. I got fabric for 2 quilts for $7, can't beat that. All I have to provide my time, the thread and batting.. which is not much at all. I love the thought of my quilts going to a sick kid in a hospital.. even if the kid is on the other side of the country... Plus every quilt I make I am getting a little better at doing my FMQ :)

dakotamaid 03-11-2014 08:38 AM

Over the years, to many to mention. My most recent are our local shelter, fire department (small quilts with stuffed animals), local hospital (they are not as picky as Project Linus or Quilts for kids.) And a neonatal unit not far from us.

Also whatever catastrophe is going on, ie: tornado victims, fire victims, etc.

Edit: When I say picky I mean mostly size and fabrics. Local places just need quilts that don't fall apart and wash easily. Size is not an issue. :)

melindad 03-11-2014 09:33 AM

I am making 30 inch quilts for the NICU ( preemies ) unit in a couple of local hospitals. My grandson was a 2 lb preemie and giving back is a no-brainer for me! Each baby will be sent home with a quilt!

The Cancer Center at Alamance County Regional Hospital.

I enjoy making bead bags ("courage keepers") for Beads of Courage. Children with serious illnesses earn symbols of courage (beads) as they receive their treatments. The bags are used to keep the beads safe. The program is 10 years old and is active in the USA, Canada, UK, Japan and New Zealand. Instructions to make and donate bags are on the website under the "artists" heading.

Daylesewblessed 03-11-2014 12:11 PM

I forgot to mention that I make tops and occasionally help my mom's group when I visit her in tying quilts for Lutheran World Relief. Most quilts go to refugees and disaster survivors world wide.

jmoore 03-12-2014 03:28 AM

Wow, so many talented and giving members on the QB. I have only donated one so far to our local church to auction for the heating/energy fund to help those in need.

mummyismean 03-12-2014 03:36 AM

Plenty Valley Salvation Army (Australia) are also doing this

Julienm1 03-12-2014 04:03 AM

I have donated to Quilts for Kids and Quilts of Valor.

ziegamomma 03-12-2014 04:13 AM

Days for Girls
women's Crisis center
children's Protective Services

Not just quilts, but sheets, blankets, personal hygiene, diapers, clothes, baby items

lclang 03-12-2014 04:35 AM

If everyone donated locally there would be less need for the expensive shipping costs. I make quilts for the local NICU, receiving blankets for the local Women's Center, and I also make "Nebraska" stocking caps for the newborns at the hospital (well over 2,000 so far). The men in particular request the little caps for their new babies.

eastslopequilter 03-12-2014 04:53 AM

I have donated a quilt to an auction for our local food pantry. I make and donate all the seasonal table toppers for the local senior center since they do not have money to decorate tables. Our local theatre had to upgrade to the digital projection system and I donated a quilt for their fund raiser. Our quilt group is in the process of making flannel shawls for the local nursing home, so we each made one or two. There are 60 people in the nursing home. Our quilt group makes quilts for the ambulance when they pick up children. The kids keep the quilts. We save our scraps to make beds for our no kill animal shelter. Our group makes bibs, receiving blankets, and burp rags for new babies or new foster babies.

twinkie 03-12-2014 05:29 AM

I make baby hats for various hospitals. That may not be a charity but it is what I do. I have also donated material to some who make charity quilts. I have tried to get connected with Children's Hospital to make "mourning sets". Baby hat and blanket to use with premies that don't make it because that is a need close to my heart. I haven't been successful so far and if any of you ladies know how to get involved with this, I would love for you to send me a PM. So many of the ladies on this board do so much for others.

Aunt Neicie 03-12-2014 06:00 AM

I belong to a church group that makes quilts for The Battered Women's Shelter in our area. We make baby to twin size for the children. We learn new techniques and patterns while making something for a child in need.

mjmachin 03-12-2014 06:08 AM

I have made quilts for our local homeless shelter, quilts that were auctioned off and proceeds going to a shelter for abused women, and some for folks in a nursing home. Now I am also making crib sheets and blankets for children in shelters. It is sad to see so many families ending up homeless. I am so thrilled to see so many on this board working so hard to help others. You are all the best!!

Vera39760 03-12-2014 06:09 AM

My churches sewing ministry has donated quilts and walker pockets to our local Veteran's home, local nursing home, church members that have been hospitalized, newborn nursery, several nursing homes in the northern part of the state. We made dresses, bags, shorts and rag dolls for groups going to the mission field from our church. We have been an organized group for almost 4 years. We meet weekly. Right now we are working to get enough quilts made to donate to our local Veteran's Home again around the 4th of July. When we donate to a nursing home, or the VA home we make sure we have enough for every resident of the home.
