Charm Pack Patterns
Hello there ladies and gentlemen!
I was wondering if you could point me to some of your favorite charm pack friendly patterns. I have recently acquired several hundred 5in squares and I'm looking for some fun ways to use them. Thanks for your help! |
I've only made one quilt from charm packs - a D9P. It was really easy but I got bored with it pretty fast. I usually like to make sampler quilts.
My favorite is the D9P :)
This is what I'm working on right now - http://www.modabakeshop.com/2010/10/...ars-quilt.html. So easy and cute! I'm making mine larger to fit a queen bed, so it will be about 6 charm packs. The Moda Bakeshop website has lots of great ways to use pre-cuts.
Check out Missouri Star Quilt Co tutorials on YouTube. Jenny uses many charm packs in her work.
I was just trying to find this pattern this morning!!! Thanks so much! Saw the quilt done and love it.
I'm working on a D4P right now
This is very simple but really pretty and is at the top of my to do list: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZfnR8K9rCs

Love the star pattern of the 14 in block. Easy way to use up fabric. Hugs

I used mine to make twister placemats cause that's the size of the block to start the twister pattern and I love them
there are a few great books out there for charm squares- the 2 I have are called 'Nickel Quilts' more Nickel quilts---they have lots of great patterns in them- and creative ways to use those 5" squares. I know there are more than the 2 I have- do a search for ' Nickel Quilts'

On the simple side -
Moda's bakeshop: Line Dance Baby http://www.modabakeshop.com/2012/02/...aby-quilt.html I've made it larger just by adding more vertical strips and making them longer. Here's one I did for a high school senior. It's about 60X70. |
I was all ready to start the falling charms until I saw the windowpane 9 patch.....oh my!
Look for the book Nickel Quilts & Borders by Pat Speth. Lots of good ideas there.
Lots of good ideas posted here. I, too, have a stack of 5" squares that were given to me. I've done a couple of coin quilts using Moda Bake Shop. They are easy and come out nice. The two I've done were crib size but you could certainly make them larger. I haven't seen the windowpane one before but I may try that next.
I love the books by Pat Speth for 5" squares. did couple of exchanges in our guild for these so I have lots of them her quilts are fun and easy.. some need pairs of squares other just need individual squares. I just finished one of hers call Mt Hood for our bed it is large queen.. have fun
Roslynd. thank you for starting this thread. a lot of good ideas here for my stacked up charm squares. hadn't really decided what to do with them. now i can get busy.

Try Anita's Arrowhead using 1 inch sticky note and following the rest of the instructions, cutting 1 inch strips. So easy and so cool ...

lol Fran , Great Minds :)

I bought 3 charm packs from MQS which is probably not enough to do anything with, but I just loved the fabric.
THEN I washed it, lol fetching all them squares from the washer was not pretty. I took my time to straighten each piece out before I put it in the dryer, still came out wrinkled. So I pressed them all. I had 165 pieces. I have decided I will not buy charm packs any more, but I like this thread for ideas of what to do. It seems I don't have enough charms for a big project ... and I am NOT charmed. ;) |

I did a pinwheel small lap quilt out of charm packs. I'm not the brightest star in math and didn't figure well enough on how many charm packs I needed. I used only two and really needed three. My mom, who is 4'9" 125 lbs, uses it as a lap quilt. But when she's gone, she's 97, I'll use it asa wall hanging, it's that small! :)

Gourmetquilter.com is a great U-tube site for charm square ideas.

How about bags? Penny Sturges uses charm packs in many of her bags. Her e is her web site: http://www.quiltsillustrated.com/ Enjoy.

Nickel Quilts by Pat Speth. The queen of 5" squares.

Thanks klgls for the Falling Charms tute from MSQC. I just bought a Nancy Drew charm pack and this will be perfect because I don't want to cut the charms. L
Another option is the Wonky Pinwheel or Whirligig. I was given a pile of charms that had already been cut for this but I didn't know what to do with them. They actually turned out to be a lot of fun to work with. This is where I posted my first question about them.

My favorite is Speedy Baby II. I use the center square to embroider, fussy cut, or put pictures. It is great for signing too! The size is 45" square and really is fast. It uses 5" charms for the second border. Just google the name and there is a pdf of it to print out.
I make baby quilts, wedding banner quilts, and just sent one for graduation with the school mascot in the center. I can make one within 2 days and it is so versatile. Enjoy your charms, Pam |
