I'm trying to make some swap blocks that are 12.5 inches. I have two started. The charms I bought are batik. My partner for the swap wants batik. So , I thought ...COOL! I have charms. I was trying to something besides a 9 patch or DP9 block. FRUSTRATED NEWBIE>>>>> :?

bearisgray 04-27-2011 07:35 AM

What happened? Why are you sorry?

kimscruzer 04-27-2011 07:36 AM

Finished two blocks that look awesome , but they are not 12.5 inches .

Some easy patterns that you might try are scrappy: shoofly, broken dishes, pinwheels, prairie queen. You might like the outcome if you choose a background color, like cream or white on white, to use and then pull from the charms for everything else. Have you looked thru quilterscache? They have tons of blocks to look at. You can even search thru by size. Good luck! You can do it!

kimscruzer 04-27-2011 07:40 AM

I will look those up ASAP! Thanks!

Yes you can! And I love your Avatar. If you ever have the chance could you post it for us to see?? :D:D

willferg 04-27-2011 07:42 AM

Well, let's see. I'm assuming you have 5" charms. You could cut them into four smaller squares of 2.5" so they finish at 2", and you could go scrappy with six squares across and six down and alternate with black, which usually makes batiks pop.

Give it some time, some design idea will come to you!

dunster 04-27-2011 07:43 AM

Still not sure why your blocks are not measuring correctly. Did you start with a block that should measure 12.5", but you're coming up short? In that case it could be the 1/4" seam allowance that is the problem. Or do you have a block that measures something other than 12.5" and you want to convert it? More information is needed.

kimscruzer 04-27-2011 07:49 AM

You should have a lot of options with a 5 inch block... don't worry you'll figure it out soon.

crt 04-27-2011 07:59 AM

If the block is too small, could you not put a frame around it to bring it up to size? Maybe I'm not reading correctly.

Oh, so the problem is that you need to find a block that can use the 5" charm squares in an efficient manner?

If you want really simple, you can do an uneven 9-patch. That way, you only have to cut some of the charm squares and the blocks can be set off with a plain alternating block or sashing.

sueisallaboutquilts 04-27-2011 08:19 AM

Thank you for posting it!!!!!!!!! It's so beautiful!!! Very artistic :D:D

kimscruzer 04-27-2011 08:28 AM

I am a newbie too, and I am horrible at sizing blocks. I know how frustrating that can be. The good news is you are super creative, so you have tons to fall back on.

kriscraft99 04-27-2011 08:57 AM

your avatar is gorgeous kimscruzer!

Here is what I came up with......two are abit larger than 12.5 , but I would rather be a little larger than smaller. :-D

Ripped on Scotch 04-27-2011 12:33 PM

hokieappmom 04-28-2011 05:01 AM

Love your avatar too! And of the three blocks you showed, all are pretty, but I really like the one on the left. Good luck.

I agree - I wanted to find easy swap blocks and found lots on quilters cache - search under (finished) size to make your search faster.

it's easy to just add a border to your blocks to make them bigger to equal the 12.5"
