This is done in several ways, but that is the way I do most of mineand nobody has ever been critical of the way it looks. You've heard of "Different strokes for different folks" More important that whoever gets your quilt enjoys it.

I've finished my quilts the same way. I've tied a lot of my quilts too. They last just as long and they mean just as much to the people I give them to as the ones I have quilted on my sewing machine.

This works well on something that will not get alot of daily use such as a wall hanging or ruinner .This method is sometimes called hemming a quilt. The abrasiveness of the batting against the fold will wear out more quickly than a true double binding on a quilt that is used as a blanket.

You are not cheating, it's a very old and frugal way of binding a quilt. To be honest I can't even do it that way. The other way just seems easier to to. Hang in there girl, do what you like with your quilt.

I just saw a quote somewhere that said: Do not let anyone write your script (for life). The quilts you make are your to do any way you want. Next time your Mom starts on you when she calls, just say (in a nice tone Mom, I've got to go and make an excuse like: a pot is boiling over or someones at the door or I've got company or ------. And always remember she is miserable and probably can't help herself. Many hugs to you.

Thank you for the idea. I always put binding on. I never even thought or knew of the fold over method. I am going to try it, don't think it would be cheating. Sorry your mom upsets you so, as you said, just rise above it.

I have a friend who is a master quilter, who also judges at a fair in a nearby country. I wanted to bind one of my quilts that way, her comment was many of the top quilters at the fair she judges use the backing around as their binding.
Negative mothers are a pain. Been there!!

I do that quite often.

Cup of tea.... I think you need a stiff drink. Hey just cause you want her to be a mom, doesn't mean she knows how. My mom was always like this, first words out of her mouth would be criticism. As I got older I came to pity her, how sad to never have a good feeling about anything.
You recognize that what she says isn't really valid, why would you listen to her opinion.

You just need to remember that they are your quilts. YOUR QUILTS! I tie some of mine, I hand quilt some, machine quilt some and pay someone else to quilt some of them. I am a quilter, so are you. 'Nuff said. Continue to make YOU happy. It is all you can do.
