purchased some muslin at joann's today. noticed while checking out that i was charged 5.99 per yd but the bolt said 3.99. fortunately the bolt was stll at the cutting counter and an adjustment was made. i can't help but wonder how many times this has happened and i didn't catch it. upcs and scanners aren't fool proof so be careful and check our receipts.
|
I try to check my receipt anytime I shop.
Recently I saw peaches a for 50-cent a pound,at Wal=Mart. Watching scanner when being checked out the peaches rang up at $1.68 per pound. Whoa, let's do a price check. Produce manager said $1.68 was correct price. He answer was someone must have moved the price sign. Needless to say I was not happy, nor did I buy peaches. This was not the first time prices a checkout did not match posted prices. I wonder how many people paid $1.68 or item that was priced 50-cent per pound. |
I was charged $36.00 for a can of dog food at Petsmart. I noticed and they fixed it, but the girl was clueless when I mentioned there was a mistake. I love my dog but not that much.

Happens to me constantly, especially at the grocery stores.
Gotta watch 'em like a hawk! |
I watch each item as they ring it. It is amazing how many times they are wrong on sale items.
|
If I go to our grocery store and an item comes up wrong you get it for nothing. It's a great store.

Joannes rang me up for two of the same books, and I only got one.. Called the manager when I got home.. I have yet to go back and get my refund.. |
It happens to me so much that I try to take someone with me to watch. I use to go back and try to make things right but the time and effort just got to me.
|
i bought .5 yards at joanns and if I had not looked at the slip I would have been charged for 5 yards, simple mistake. Normally I just pay and really dont pay much attention ... not anymore
|
I think it happens at all stores including dept stores.
|
I had that happen too. Evidently the new bolts are more and the machine reads the higher amount. They did fix it but I'm also wondering about the next guy!
|
I had that happen at Joanns also. They said the scanned price was the price increase. They did give it to me at the marked price!
|
Actually, it happens to me at Joann's a lot. I've had to argue for the marked price several times.
|
Yes. please watch your items being rung up. The computers are only as good as the people feeding it info and if the IT people aren't getting it done the cash register will be wrong. I had a lady get charged 99.99 for a small notion item. SHE PAID!! It wasn't until about 3 hours later that she thought to question it. Of course, we fixed it, but she had to make an extra trip.
|
If an item is posted a certain price that is what you pay no matter what the scanner or managers say. They can change the tag but still have to honor the posted price that you saw.
My hubby and I were shopping at Home Depot for a tree. Found a great one and the sgin on the tree read $14.99. Check out person said wrong, that is a $45.00 tree. Called the manager and he agreed that it was $45 but because the sign was the lesser amount that is what we paid. By the way, the manager sent someone out to check all the prices on every tree that very minute. |
I got charged for 3 battings at JoAnns the other night when I only bought 2. Caught it as he rang it up, though.

The last time I went to JoAnns I purchased 2 different colors of corduroy. All corduroy was 50% off. One color rang up at sale price and one at regular price. They made the adjustment. I am just glad I checked before I paid.

Good heads up for us ... I am very careless about checking the receipts ... usually, I am in a hurry to get out of the store ... Thanks.

I just try not to shop at WM if I don't have to. I try and pretend that they don't exist. I make a few more stops, but the other places are so much more customer friendly... and they staff better so you can check out more quickly.

I frequently have "pricing" issues at Jo Ann's. I do try to avoid going there but sometimes ... certain sale items I can not resist.
|
Last year on the day after Thanksgiving, I was charged regular price for SEVERAL sale items and when I mentioned it to the cashier, she rolled her eyes and got an attitude BUT I never lost my cool (even though I had been up for 4 hours and been to three other stores and changed a flat tire that day) and I was polite and I even apologized for taking up time BUT the only reason I bought the fabric was because it was on sale .... I even apologized to the women in line behind me and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM told me not to worry about it because they would all be doing the same thing!!
Needless to say, I only paid the sale price and the manager apologized to me for the rudeness of the cashier (which the woman directly behind me brought up lol) SO ON BLACK FRIDAY CHECK CHECK CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS AND SALE PAPERS!!!!!!!!! |

If this were true, a free-standing display of Barbie electric cars (for kids) normally price at 150.00 (or whatever) would have to be sold for 5.99 if someone moves the free-standing price tag from the 24 packs of Pepsi over to the electric cars-- I wouldn't hold the store to it. They can't contantly monitor what people do, or we'll be limited to how many people can go into a store at once like they do sometimes here in Europe. (That way they can watch all of you at once!) |
My hubby just cringes when we shop because I watch it like a hawk and catch everything. Lol. He gets embarrased so ez. Guess he doesn't get the "thrill of the sale.". :D. He's such a cutie.

I always try to have an idea how much my bill should be when I get to the register, anywhere.
I saw some Gingerbread houses at Joann's the other week and I asked an employee if I could use my 40% off coupon on that kit. Sure you can. I get to register and I'm watching the small screen on the charge card scanner and I see that the 40% came off a $3 item. I asked why it wasn't off the GB house? She didn't know and she couldn't change anything and the managers were on lunch. There was a man working the register besides her and he had no customers. I said excuse me but can you tell me why the discount is coming off the $3 item and not the G-house. He said it should and he starts to read the register as best as you can, and I told them both again that the person on the floor said I could use my coupon on the G-house. He says who can we call? and then decideds to call for help. Guess who the help is? The person I asked on the floor if the coupon is good on the house!!! She looks again at the register info and discovers that the house is on sale, although NO SALE SIGN was posted at the houses. I asked what is it on sale for? A dollar less than the sign price! I said that's no sale, settled for the % off the $3 item (since I knew everything else I had was at sale price and those coupons are not good on sale items!) and proceeded to pay me bill. I had a gift card. The original clerk tells me to run the card thru the scanner in front of me. She works there, I did what she said and the card doesn't scan. Try it again and it doesn't work. By this time the line is long and the man is waiting on customers and the person that was called off the floor was waiting on customers. My clerk waits till that clerk is finished with her customer and asks her why my card doesn't scan. That clerk says you have to run gift cards thru the register - the other scanner is only for credit cards. Ok, my bill is paid. I'm ready to leave and my clerk says don't forget your gingerbreadhouse. I could have walked off with it but reminded her "don't you remember I said take it off my bill - I did not want it?" Oh yeah, thanks she says. From all my readings on this board, I KNOW there may issues at Joann's so I stay aware of what is going on with my bill and try to stay calm. And this can happen at any store! By the way, as I was waiting for help at the register, another customer didn't have a coupon and since I had the one I printed off the computer and was an extra for me, I gave it to her. She was more thankful than the employees!! |
I didn't use to check them closely, but I do now. Bought some books at Jo Ann's recently when they were discounted 50%. Great bargain, but I was charged twice for the same book. Caught the mistake while sitting in my car so went right back in and no problem getting a refund. Now I check every receipt from every retailer, in this economy every penny counts.
|
Yup, I agree, it is so much easier to watch and catch mistakes BEFORE you leave the store. I try to watch them as they ring, and normally scan my receipt quickly when I get to the car before leaving the parking lot.
That being said, I normally know roughly how much my total should be as I add the numbers as I am adding things to my cart, never cease to amaze my hubby:) Another thing to watch for is refunds that go back to your card. Just a couple of weeks ago, I went to Joann's during the big sale with the 20% coupon, and stocked up on pillow forms. As we were walking out of the store, I realized these were not the ones on sale. So back I go to return them and get the right kind ( It was a significant savings). She got my card back and put the refund amount back on it and I have a receipt that shows it! But I kept checking my card account online to see that money back and didn't for a whole week. I called the store and spoke to the manager, they got some info from the receipt and had to call their treasury who 'fixed" something. About three days later, the money did show up. I still don't get it, how could the receipt says the money were refunded to the card, show my card's last 4 digits and the money now show up! I wonder how many times that happen and gets missed. Buyer be aware! |
I agree - watch all sales slips - always ask if you question a price. You are the consumer. JoAnn sales slips are at times so hard to figure esp when buying several items on sale. And then again I never buy unless on sale or using coupon.

EVERYTIME I go to Joanne's something is rung up wrong. You have to watch them...and I don't believe it's cashier error either. We have 2 Joanne's here, and they both are shady. I hate going there.
|
Shopping at a local department store picked up an entire set of flatware which was marked at less than $50. The real price was closer to $150. Manager said he had to honor the posted price so ... yehaw! And yes - they scurried to change the sign as they were checking mine out.
At Walmart a bolt of fabric had two price stickers - one for $4.44 and one for $2. Asked the clerk to check the price and it was $4.44. I told her she needed to cover up the other sticker - but didn't buy the fabric. $4.44 is not bad, but ... I punished them for not honoring the lower price. Showed them, didn't I? :) |
I watch at Joann's but I have another example of cash register problems.
I had a large family, by todays standard, one girl and four boys. In the 70's I realized that I was spending almost $6000.00 at the A&P. I did not check every receipt but EVERY RECEIPT THAT I CHECKED HAD A PROBLEM. It was really shocking but $100.00 per week is $5200.00 a year. That is a lot of money. Quilter68 who is now 69 |
The Joanns where I shop is notorious for this. I check now before I leave the parking lot. Nothing is more infuriating that to get home and realize that you paid more for something than you should have.
|
If I find a problem and the cashier gets annoyed I have no problem reminding them it's my money, not theirs.
|
Unfortunately we do get charged the non sale price or aren't given our proper discount. I think it takes the joy out of buying when we have to check everything from the cut of the fabric to if our % coupons are honored correctly. It happens all the time. Hancock's is just as bad as JoAnns. Last time I was in I asked for a quarter yard of a material. The bolt had not been taken from and there was a big difference of the non cut edge from one side to the other. I watched to see how she was going to handle that mess. Much to my amazement, she measured from the longer side and I could see the measurement was not going to be cut. I let her go ahead and do her thing and didn't say anything until she was finished cutting. I then took the fabric and said to her "and do you think I have 18" there?" while holding the fabric to the measuring board. It was a couple inches short, plus the uncut side went way wonkey.
It just upsets me to think they have to be watched so closely to get charged correctly and get the yardage we asked and are charged for. Maybe it is only 50 cents here and a dollar there but it can really add up over time. I now take the time to add up the costs of my purchases before I get to the check out stand. Not fun! Once in a while I get a good clerk to take care of my needs and that is sewwww wondeful! I know we want to feel good about our puchases and I definitely praise the ones who do a good job, but that should be the norm and not the rare. |
I, too, try to have a "mental image" of what my total bill should be when I approach the register - anywhere. I have also heard "well someone must have put the item back in the wrong spot." Just gotta be careful.

Better CHECK & RE-CHECK after Wal-Mart.
They do it all the time (I caught them 3 times). They also sell out-of-date meats. J J |
In the past I have worked for both a grocery store and JoAnn's. It is ammazing the things that go on on BOTH sides of the counter! YES! Check your recipts, but it is true the prices are only as good as the peope who put them into the computer. As for the signs, it is true the signs need to be correct also, but they are supposed to have the name of the item connected (NOT like WL_MARTS!)so that a customer or empolyee can easily tell if someone has tryed to "price switch" on the signage. I too have been known to get the eyeroll from the DH while shopping when items have the wrong signage, and I always get the lower price- or I walk away loudly proclaming my disgruntled attitude. And when I promise to never go back to a store I keep my promise and I tell everyone I know the problem I had!
Sorry- guess I needed to vent a little! |
I had that problem at JoAnns too. I found two bolts of the same fabric with two different prices. I took the lower priced bolt for cutting and it scanned the higher price. I asked the price she was charging me and 'reminded' her that she had to give the price listed on the bolt.
