Does anyone know where I can get the directions to make the chicken pincushion made out of two log cabin blocks? I got one set of directions off the net, but they just aren't clear, and no pictures!
Stores want $10 for one of these and I thought I could make one myself, but just can't figure this one out. Would appreciate any help. :) |
Oh how I would love that pattern also. I'll be watching to get this pattern. Wanted to make some for 4-H chicken auction.

Thank you so much! I've been wanting to make one of these for a long time.
Ohhhhhhh - thank you so much . :) :)
you're welcome. :) I've made tons of them!
Okay, dumb question time.... you fill it with dry rice? What kind of rice - just the regular white stuff?
you can fill it with anything. Sometimes I use crushed walnuts in a muslin bag, or craft pellets, or brillo, or polyfil. It's your choice really.
My suggestion is if you're using rice, walnuts or pellets, put it in a small muslin bag, whip or ladder stitch that closed, and then stuff the chicken. Also, use a small funnel cos they can make a mess if you mis-aim. :) (Ask how I know that!) |
not instant rice the old fashioned kind purchased in a plastic bag like dried beans...................calla
Okay, I get it... the rice (or whatever) is just to weight the bottom! I have a bunch of craft pellets I can use. Thanks!

here is a pic of mine. not sure where i got the pattern when i did these years ago. i've not seen another pattern quite like them. the rooster has one more round than the hen. what i like about these is that the log cabin blocks are the same, but the hen has the white on top and the rooster has the white on the bottom.

so cute, i love them!!!
how adorable. thanks for the info on the pattern. i've been wanting to make some different pin cushions for gifts.

I think there's a video on Quilters TV. Look under the Quilting With Shar videos.

A friend sent me a chicken pattern that is made from log cabin blocks, but I don't know if it is a pin cushion. I don't know where it is at this time, but I will look for it and post it, if I am lucky enough to find it. If not, I will ask her to send it to me again.
thank you so very much for all the replies. I have been "stewing" over these for quite some time. Maybe now I can produce some. I just love this board and all the friendly, intelligent, inspiring folks on it! Looks like others will be enjoying the pattern too.
thank you for the link to this pattern it is so cute
I made one with the log cabin base BUT pins always seem to hit a seam when I put them back in. Well the pin does not go all the way in, so I made another one with a non-pieced square of fabric. Much better for me while sewing and not looking when I put each pin in the chicken.
Thanks, I will make one
Thanks, those are so cute! I think I will try to make some too!
Thanks for the question and replies. I've started collecting chicken pin cushion patterns.

Thanks for the link - definitely on my "to-do" list.

I have also made these chickens, got the pattern from a friend. I filled my with synthetic pellets, added some crushed cinnamon stick and cloves. Put them in my pantry cupboard as a scent sachet, would work for other closets as well.
I avoid using rice or grains in things, just so they can't be eaten by anything!!! |
I put plastic rounds that are used for filling dolls and other crafty things. It comes in a 2 lb. bag and I got mine at Joann's I like it better than the rice.
