Civil War GFG samples-What do you think?
1 Attachment(s)
I recently posted that I had cut out 2000 squares (2.5") of Civil War fabric to make a Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt. However, after I cut them out they seemed too dull for that type of pattern. I basted some together and laid them out on top of muslin to see how they look. What do you think? Too dull?

They fabrics look nice together.
A suggestion - if you are planning to put 'paths' between each 'flower' - maybe make all the outside rounds of comparatively light or comparatively dark fabrics? So that it would be easier to choose a 'background' type of fabric? Right now, it looks like you are using a medium/lighter fabric for the outside round. |
I think they look beautiful. It won't be bright but civil wars colors never are.
Looks great to me. I am also a lover of Civil War era fabics.
Ooooh! keep going.......that is going to be a beautiful quilt!
I love civil war fabrics. Your gfg is beautiful. The colors are perfect.
Looks good from here! :)
Definitely NOT too dull for me, but if you wish to get rid of them, Im game!!! They truly are beautiful.
I think they are beautiful and a nice lighter small designed sash or a darker background would make them pop as much as you would need for the Civil war type quilt.
Beautiful!
So far they look great. Like said before, be consistant in your 3rd round so that you can choose your connecting path fabric and have everything pop!
They are gorgeous. Saw one the other day appliqued on light background squares. It left some free space for spectacular quilting.
It will be beautiful however you choose to set it up. |
I love them.
Beautiful! I'd say go for it.
They are not dull at all....they look fantastic. I would definitely persevere....I see a beautiful quilt in your future.
I iike the soft colors that you have chosen, I would say go for it.

First I tried them with the lighter in the middle and dark on outside, then tried them with the lighter on the outside like they are now. I may need to lay them a different fabric to see if that makes a difference. I haven't sewn them together yet, can't decide which way they look best . . . I always struggle with that aspect of the quilting process. I am fairly new at quilting. |

I will do that - someone said the same thing too and I hadn't thought of that. I just love this forum - so many wonderful quilters willing to share their knowledge! It has helped me tremendously in my quilting journey! |
Not in the least dul!! I love the civil war era fabrics..I want to use them for my daughters wedding quilt..Where did you get your fabrics from? I love the combinations and prints!!
Very pretty!! You are going to have a terrific quilt when you are done!
Gorgeous! I love CW fabrics & this is no exception!

A black or dark brown in the paths would be stunning!
I think maybe the reason you think the flowers look dull, is because traditionally the pattern was done in 20's & 30's fabrics. But, I love it done in Civil Wars!!!
No indeed! They're beautiful I think! Love em!
Oh no, they are just beautiful!

I think it will be wonderful and commend you for making it. I would never want to try that one. Was at a quilt show this last weekend and saw a lady showing how to make this. good luck to you and I will be just beautiful. show us your progress so we can follow it.

When I saw this my first comment was "Wow. Now I really like that." Keep going & please post as you go & when it's completed. I have looked at Civil war fabrics for a long time but never bought any until a week ago. I love the GFG quilt & the 30's & 40's repro fabric used with it. I never thought it would look good in any other fabrics. But it looks spectacular with the CW prints. It's going to be a beautiful quilt. I hope to do one like it someday. Keep Posting!

Not dull at all. If you like Civil War fabrics, muted is what you get.
I've been online this morning printing Civil War and early 1800s patterns for a friend. The patterns are free. There are 28 pages of patterns, many for repros and alot that aren't Windham Fabrics, as you no doubt know, specializes in Civil War and 1800s fabrics, plus a few 30s. http://www.windhamfabrics.com click on free patterns |
I am not a big fan of white backgrounds. I don't think they do anything to enhance the visual effect of a quilt.
I would use as a background a pale yellow or a beige. In fact, if you have enough of the fabric left from the center fabric, I would see how that looks. Anything but white. |
