The best thing I've found to remove any kind of glue residue including basting spray is WD40. Spray on, let sit a minute, then wipe off. WD40 leaves an oily feel, so after using I clean the mat or whatever with Dawn dish detergent.

If it is so hard to remove, how does it get washed out of the quilt?
