My mom uses them to tie up her tomatoe plants in the garden, to tie tops of bags.

Dae Kuczma 02-22-2011 07:12 AM

Just one question: how do you "reuse" selvage edges????

Ripped on Scotch 02-22-2011 07:34 AM

I have a couple of patterns for selvages. I believe it says that they need to be at least 1 inch wide. Now to start saving may selvages to make it! I my just buy them from some one on here.

Peggyinno 02-22-2011 08:46 AM

A year ago I started cutting them off of all new fabric as soon as they were washed. I'm in the process now of cutting ALL selvages off every piece of fabric I own and am refolding and reorganizing and of course, purging, as I clean out my sewing room!!! I plan on using them in string quilts that I will be making later on in the year.

NinaK 02-22-2011 09:20 AM

Would these work for the latch hook rugs they make from fabric?

gpinet 02-22-2011 09:47 AM

I belong to a quilt guild in NH and some of us save salvages. One girl made a bag. Very cute.

If anyone has ideas, please comment.

I was taking a tag out of a skirt I bought to use for fabric and wondered if anyone ever saves the tags to use in a quilt---I know another subject but thought I would throw that in the mix.

Dae Kuczma 02-22-2011 10:50 AM

Does anyone have a picture using selvage pieces of a completed project? I'm not visualizing what all of you are talking about.

Yep, I've seen some quilts made using labels. They're usually zigzagged or fused to a fabric block, and then assembled into a quilt. Very cool.

Guess I will go retrieve it and add it to my now newly started selvage collection.

I wish I could find a picture. It had all high end designer labels (YSL, CK, MK,etc) some of them vintage which made it so interesting.

libbiebean 02-22-2011 11:11 AM

People are so nutty - I'm referring to myself. I save them, but use them for tying things in my garden, tomatoes, etc. I really want to thank all you lovely people here, though, for all the fantastic info I have gotten in just the past couple of weeks. Sure wish we could get together and quilt.

bjnicholson 02-22-2011 11:33 AM

I do. I don't have enough for a quilt, but it's a start.

sheila bee 02-22-2011 12:00 PM

some where on here I saw a snowman made with selvages !!!! on my bucket list !!!

Claddaughquilting 02-22-2011 12:08 PM

Yes I save them. I have big plans for them! But in the mean time, I make gift tags for my quilted projects with the selvedge from the material used.
I would post a picture, but I can't figure out how!!

I put a selvage edge pillow on page 3 of this thread on the board. I'll try and post another picture. The one I am posting was my first one and I was following a pattern for the layout. I was not happy with such a big yellow piece on the quilt. I did a King size and love it, but can't get it to post.

DonnaB 02-22-2011 01:40 PM

I've mailed some edges to someone on this board, who is making a quilt, so please save them. The need will come up.

Quilter Day-by-Day 02-22-2011 01:58 PM

I save and use them. I'm in the process of making blocks right now.

I would love to know and see too, always felt bad about not using them.

squeakie 02-22-2011 05:54 PM

I'm always looking for them to make my granddaughters baby doll quilts

Ziva 02-22-2011 06:08 PM

At the Houston Quilt Show there was a quilt made totally of the selvages. It was great! I was I had a photo to show you.

Actually, that's Karen's blog.

I don't collect them at all but am constantly amazed at the things people are creating using them.

I mean, really, check out the Easter bunny on the first page of the blog. It's hysterical.

My all time favorite, though, is the dress made by someone in Australia.

http://selvageblog.blogspot.com/2008...carletons.html

The umbrella is pretty cool, too.

That's amazing! I've always thrown mine away, and can't see myself using them, but will definitely save now for someone who can.

neeng 02-22-2011 06:28 PM

I'm saving the printed parts to add to a bookcase quilt, and the remainder just because but haven't a purpose for the remainder yet. Also looking for printed fabric scraps in different colours for the bookcase quilt (since the selvages are usually white). I could dye some I suppose....haven't gotten that far ahead yet LOL.

butterflies5518 02-22-2011 06:39 PM

wow! The imagination runs wild, but will save them for others.

georgia 02-22-2011 06:58 PM

I HAVE BEEN SAVING THEM AND WILL CONTINUE TO SAVE THEM IF ANYONE WANTS THEM,BLESSINGS,GEORGIA NOT A WHOLE LOT RIGHT NOW BUT WILL HAVE PLENTY AFTER A WHILE

HisPatchwork 02-22-2011 07:27 PM

I made 9- 6"selvedge blocks today and started 28 more {sewed the first two rows of selvedge down}. I am going to make a quilt to take outside with me when I sit on my swing. May end up making it a little bigger. You start with your foundation square, lay a selvedge piece down then lay another selvedge strip over it covering the raw edge. You are sewing along the finished selvedge edge each time, so no raw edges show...continue until you fill the foundation shape, then trim.

neeng 02-22-2011 07:39 PM

Thanks for the tip, makes it easier to work with the skinnier pieces.

Thanks Heather I'm going to use your idea and recycle my salvages and scraps too.

I saw a pillow where the labels were appliqued on a base fabric. I have started saving those now. Can't remember where I saw the pillow.

grammysews4u 02-22-2011 09:21 PM

I don't save them but one of the ladies from my quilting group does. She makes purses from the ones she saves.
