I don't save them. I usually cut my selveges and use them as markers or labels for WIPs -- just write what I want with a Sharpie. I may be missing something here, but all of the selveges I look at don't seem wide enough to make anything out of. By the time you even up the edge and figure in your seam allowance, you almost don't see any of it and it ends up looking like a regular strip of fabric.

Is this what you wanted to know about?

For downloads - http://www.winnowing.com/
To buy the patterns - http://www.winnowing.com/patterns.html about halfway down is this: Book Block for the Library Quilt

Interesting ideas!

cpfrog 02-23-2011 12:30 AM

I use them to tie up ...stuff. They are soooooo strong; boxes, junk for the trash, branches, anything that needs tethering! Even keep a few lengths in our RV camper and in the car trunk...never know when you might have to tie something down or up. HAhaha

Greyhound Mom 02-23-2011 04:55 AM

Yes, I collect them too. Someday I will make a quilt-already have the pattern!!!!!

Here is an example from a board member. There are lots of nice ones, just search "bookcase" from the top of the page.

The threads don't unravel around the holes, so it is ok.

vjengels 02-23-2011 05:42 AM

Oh yeah, I save mine; I keep telling people I'm going to make a selvage quilt, but, so far I've used them for tying things in the garden, fence marking for the dog, wrapped rope placemat, future projects are a hammock to hang my batting from the ceiling, and color coordinated containers ( wrapped rope) for my scraps, last but not least a purse/ bag.

grammysews4u 02-23-2011 06:27 AM

I guess maybe it is ! it is cute stuff thanks for the info:)

Karyn 02-23-2011 06:29 AM

I save them in a plastic bag, then use to tie up tomato plants in the garden.

I saw a pillow where the labels were appliqued on a base fabric. I have started saving those now. Can't remember where I saw the pillow.

Ive seen them make large picture quilts out of them, very tedious I would think. but very beautiful. think fons&porter had them in a few years back.

mommafank 02-23-2011 06:39 AM

This has been interesting----never thought that anyone would save these things or even use them. I guess we are not as wasteful as I once thought!

huntannette 02-23-2011 08:31 AM

OH WOW!!! I didn`t understand how you could keep selvage but after i looked at these sites I now got it...just awesome..guess who will be saving them from now on?? LOL Thank you...you ladies are so creative!!!!

Actually, that's Karen's blog.

I don't collect them at all but am constantly amazed at the things people are creating using them.

I mean, really, check out the Easter bunny on the first page of the blog. It's hysterical.

My all time favorite, though, is the dress made by someone in Australia.

The umbrella is pretty cool, too.

huntannette 02-23-2011 08:39 AM

I have recently started saving selvages and hope to make some purses out of them.

anniec55 02-23-2011 10:36 AM

I love them, save them and use them just love how they work up!!! They add so much interest to any project. Look at it this way, if you pay $7.00 to $9.00 yard for material they don't deduct just because it's a selvage it's still they same price and makes just as beautiful a piece as the rest with a little added "character"! If you buy the material on vacation or somewhere special, you can even write a note on the edge to commemorate and jog your memory.... include the place or date making it even more unusual!!

Here are some of the blocks I made yesterday.

Zephyr 02-23-2011 11:41 AM

I think I can put a picture of my King size Selvage quilt on but below this "Quick Reply" there is no place to add the picture. Anyone that can tell me how to do it?

luckylindy333 02-23-2011 12:25 PM

I am going to start ripping off my selvages when I do a project. When I saw those rugs made with wrapped clothseline, that is when I decided...

HisPatchwork- I love your selvage blocks! Thanks for sharing!!!

you can post a quick reply in the box...after you send it, notice that you can 'edit' and you can 'add new attachment' to your post...one at a time. Or, now that you have posted...you can reply to your post...or any other post..with or without quoting reply..and add your comment and up to three attachments. After sending it, you can add more attachments using the 'add new attachment' feature available at the bottom of your post. {without having to make another post...you just keep updating it until you are finished}

If this works, thank you for your help, you will see a photo of half of my King sized Selvage quilt. The keyboard boarder is selvage also and I have four more bags of selvage edges in the closet!

jacie 02-23-2011 02:49 PM

this is amazing, at first I was only making small cosmetic bags for girls home, but maybe I will try making lap quilt for nursing home! Would surely give the little ladies something new to talk about ,,, love 'em!!

Zephyr 02-23-2011 03:10 PM

To make a diamond you need two selvage squares. Cut each one from one corner to the other. Then rearrange them and sew together.

HisPatchwork 02-23-2011 07:23 PM

I like the idea of the selvedge boarder...nice quilt.

NannaJen 02-23-2011 07:28 PM

I just use them for tying things up, roll up and tie spare bedding, pillows, use the to tie fabric bundles, or in the garden, they are strong and environmentally friendly.

Neena, cool quilt! I can see you are happy with it.

What are mug rugs?

Coasters... only cuter.

They are what you get if a coaster married a placemat! They are around 6"x9", made for a mug and a snack to sit side by side. Because they are larger than a coaster, there is a little more room to get creative.

gzuslivz 02-26-2011 03:17 PM

I started saving mine, but wasn't cutting them wide enough. I am crazy about the whale and the lamp! I only wish I had made the whale 3 months ago! I just led a women's Bible Study on the book of Jonah! How cute would that have been?!?

Laura22 02-26-2011 03:17 PM

I save mine, I've seen some cool things made from them.
