Color questions
 

Ok, so we're, my DD and I, jumping into our first project. We're wondering if these colors match. We're going to be making a 15" x 15" throw pillow for my mom's bed. Do these colors and patterns work? I don't have much to work with, I have maybe 40 FQ, so please make suggestions and I'll look to see if I have it.

Those are pretty, but since you are new let me tell you the secret to quilting isn't color, it's 'value'. Value is how light or how dark a fabric is. In your quilt you need contrast in value. As you look at your three fabrics you chose, squint your eyes until everything is blurry, and you will only be able to see how light or dark the fabrics are. When I squint at your three fabrics, I can see the two prints are basically the same value, so that means your work will not have much contrast (although the purpley boxes in the squares print does stand out as a darker value, but there isn't much of it). You need contrast, or all your pieces will just seem to blend together. Your gray is a little bit of a contrast. Pull some more fabrics, squint at them as a group, and look for that value contrast.

Also, a fabric that reads as a "dark" against one fabric, may look like a "light" against another.

You may want to read some about color value and contrast in quilting. There are articles online and in blogs that can help you.

The butterflies & the solid definitely match. I think the 4th fabric with the hot pink & olive green is so different you'd have to add more fabrics to get it to work with the other 3. It is substantially more saturated & the green is more of a yellow-green (olive) versus the blue-green that's in the other fabrics. You could potentially make them work by adding in the direct complement of olive (periwinkle) in a fairly saturated hue. Otherwise, I'd probably stick with the first three and then work in some blues or purples to add interest and vibrancy; or else go with a muted palette and add in some greys or beiges and more shade of pink.

need some dark. Maybe that magenta in the checked fabric. Or add another fabric where a new dark color is added, Its pretty but too even toned.

Looks okay to me. I don't always like dark and light together. I like matchy, matchy. I pick colors from the main print or focus fabric.

They look fine together. As others have mentioned, all three are light in tone. If you want a soft, neutral finished product, they will be fine! If however you want a finished pillow with more "pop" or "zing", look to add one or two darker fabrics such as a deep raspberry pink, dark sage green, or look to some contrasting colors like dark purple or even black that always adds a dramatic touch.

i feel that the boxy with purple and brown isn't such a good color here.
