I'm in Jane's quilt guild. She is just great at teaching this method and so generous with her time.

If any of you own a Nook you can get a free book 111 Stained Glass Patterns by Donna Robertson that has some great patterns in it.
Thanks for the tutorial! I've been wanting to get into this and didn't know where to start! I'm going to print a simple pattern from that book, get my supplies and dive in! You are so generous to share your time with us "newbies" |
Silver Needle, thanks for the compliment! Reveal yourself at the next morning guild meeting or send me an email.
Kakels, be sure you get the Derwent Inktense and not Watercolor pencils. When you brush, only use a little gel and work it in. You should not see small globs glistening on the surface. Use short "scrubbing" strokes to push the color into the fiber. Enjoy! Please post your results. |
That is beautiful.
|
You have created a real work of art!! I'm still 'planning' a project with inktense pencils I just had to buy last year! LOL
|
You can also dampen your fabric by placing it in water, wring out, and then roll up in a towel. Then draw on the damp fabric with the pencil and immediately work into the fabric with a small, round tip, short, stiff brush in a scrubbing motion. It really doesn't bleed this way. You can iron it dry between pressing cloths and then work on it again. You might want to add another color or shading on top of a color. If you start with a lighter color, you can work toward darker or bolder color.

jane I'm wondering if you are still using the derwent inktense pencils and have changed any of your previous techniques. I also have done much research on the technique and have purchased the inktense pencils but not used them yet. I was going to try some of the water brushes. any thoughts. tx

You did a wonderful job al I can say is BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL.
|
Yes, I like to use the Inktense pencils on my quilt labels. Thanks for the tip on aloe vera.
|
Very beautiful!

I just finished doing a small quilt of my daughter riding her horse--if I can get a photo I'll upload. I quilted first and then added the Derwent Inktense and set with a DRY iron (steam will make it bleed just like water). I wanted the colors muted for this one.
On the Michael Miller COLOR ME fabric (my LQS has both the Christmas and the Halloween ones) I'm coloring first, then using aloe vera gel (no other additives and not lotion) to go over--it both sets the color and makes it much richer and brighter--plan to use this for the fronts of Christmas stockings for g-boys--will quilt around the designs first, then cut the stockings out. My sister used that water soluble, adhesive transfer paper on a recent embroidery project and then figured out she could not use crayons as suggested in the pattern as the adhesive paper blocked it and she worried about the crayon wax gumming up the floss. So once she removed the transfer paper, she used the inktense pencils and she used water as wanted muted colors--but blended with a small brush and dampened q-tips. set with heat. |
That's beautiful. I need to give this a go as I would love to make my granddaughter a quilt with high heeled shoes on it.
|
puma, go to this tutorial here on the board ... http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...l-t140660.html I'm using still using the technique as described in this tutorial ... Derwent Intense Pencils on Fabric Tutorial. I know some people use a fabric medium found in Michaels instead of aloe gel.
quiltingshorttimer, you do not need to heat set this ink as it is permanent after air drying. The only reason for ironing might be to speed the drying process, but I wouldn't want to do it on top of quilted fabric. |

Water is very hard to control and will allow the color to bleed. Lily quilt |
I have read many a tutorial. I order the pencils and cant wait to try them out. I read where the fabric medium makes the fabric a bit stiffer. but when you wash the pc it will soften up. also, once you add the water to the inktense it becomes permanent. you need to pay attention to the pencils also as there is inktense and there is watercolor. the watercolor is not permanent. I am going to try the aloe gel though.i know you can only dampen the pencil w/the water don't really want it wet. thank you!

Thanks, Jane--wasn't sure if it was totally set after the aloe dries. The fabric medium is a LOT more expensive than aloe and the aloe doesn't feel stiff. Jane's info is wonderful!
Here is the fabric that I'm working on for the g-boys stockings--I'll quilt it on the long arm (the background) and then cut out stocking shapes. You can see the part I've aloe gelled and the part that isn't done yet. |
Beautiful lily!

elnan, don't add any water to the aloe vera gel. I color and add gel first and then quilt. But you can quilt and then color and add gel or fabric medium.

puma, after coloring with Inktense pencils one needs a moistening agent to activate the dry ink so it goes into the fibers of the fabric. You can use a brush with water. Depending on the size of brush and how much water is on the brush tip ... the ink may bleed. You can use a small amount of aloe gel on the brush to scrub the ink into the fabric. Regardless of whether you use water or aloe gel ... when dry ... the ink is permanent. It does not need to be heat-set.

Thanks for the tutorials, Jane! I am in the process of making a portrait quilt that means a lot to me, featuring my daughter. I wanted to use the pencils to add subtle shading in certain areas around the eyes and face.
Also, I ordered the 24 pack which contains a white pencil. Do you know if the white will show up on darker fabrics? I would love to use it as a highlight in the eyes. One last question! If you use aloe gel, it must be washed out afterwards, correct? If you use fabric medium, do you also have to wash it? Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom :) |
Very beautiful. The colors are so vibrant. You are a very talented lady.

beautiful work

Please,Please write a tutorial on how you did this technique. Your quilt blocks are just breath taking. The color just pops. When you do the watercolor pencils or Inktense pencils technique on fabric for use in your quilting. Will the quilts be washable? Does the color wash out any? This is so beautiful and different. |
Wholeheart Mom, white will not show on darker fabrics. You should probably use white fabric paint. You don't have to wash out the aloe vera gel or the fabric medium. The thing about the aloe gel is that if it is NOT washed out and you want to add more color on top of it, the additional color may not go into the fabric.
|
Littledreamdevil, look at post # 374 for a tutorial I have written. Thanks for your views. I love the color of these inks, too. The quilts are washable and the color will not wash out. However, some of the color gets mixed with the aloe vera gel when it is brushed on, so a little color might come off when washed.
|
puma, don't dip the pencil tip into water. If water gets into the wood, it will split. You can wet a brush with water and then brush color from the tip of the pencil if desired.
|
this looks so fun, I gave myself a set for my birthday after reading your posts. thanks!
|
thank you that's why I also bought blocks.

puma, I have the blocks, too. Here is an art quilt where I used Derwent Inktense pencils to color the turtle and trees along the bank.
|
That's so pretty!! I'll have to try that! Does the color wash away or do you only use this on things you don't wash?

Jane, your art quilts are beyond gorgeous and soooo inspiring! My inktense pencils have finally arrived and I can't wait to play with them. Thanks for the tutorial and for sharing this process with us all :)
|
Becky's Crafts, no, the color does not wash away. The ink is permanent when dry.
Thanks to all for your compliments. I hope you have fun making your own projects with Inktense pencils. |
which color pencils they are using?
