Beautiful block. I have wanted to do something with colored pencils but didn't know if the color would fade out or not.

This little quilt was colored by a 7-year-old girl. It is a Club Penguin (game on computer).

A question, what is the differents between fabric medium and textile medium, been to joann's and hobby lobby and ask for fabric medium and they give me textile medium. are they the same? I have textile medium for other crafts. Thanks for any Info.

janeknapp 08-10-2011 10:07 AM

I think they are the same. Textile means fabric.

The textile/fabric mediums I've read about are to help use acrylic paint on fabric.

Maybe someone else can add more information.

Janeknapp- Thank you for the reply, you are the best

I love the Loew Cornell brushes for this technique. I bought a set of four from Michaels for use on fabric, but Michaels doesn't carry that brand now. The Art Minds brand Michael's sells is not quite as stiff as I like for this technique. I ordered individual brushes from Dharma Trading Company to add more sizes.

Order the Loew Cornell flat and round fabric painting brushes from Dharma.
http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/3260-AA.shtml

The flat brushes 2, 4, 6, and 8 and the round brushes 10/0, 5/0, 0, and 2 are the ones that I prefer for the work I am doing.

Here is what Dharma says about Brushes For Fabric Painting:

Fabric painting brushes need to be stiffer so you can press the paint into the fabric. Fabric paints have to be pressed down into the fabric as they are painted on. If you just lay a bead or layer on the surface, it will not grip the fibers and therefore will flake or chip off.

Silk Brushes vs. Fabric Brushes
Silk brushes are soft and soak up large amounts of dye. They are used for filling in areas and watercolor painting. Fabric brushes are stiffer than silk brushes, which helps to force paint or dye into the weave of fabric.

This is beautiful. I assume you are familiar with Quilting Arts Magazine. They have great things like this in there. Their website for the TV show (on PBS) also has show notes with techniques, photos etc.
Great work!

janeknapp 09-08-2011 05:45 AM

Thanks, Johanna! I do have a subscription to the Quilting Arts Magazine. I see so many things I would like to do in the issues.

SewExtremeSeams 09-08-2011 09:02 AM

Jane, are you talking about using these brushes when you are applying aloe vera gel over the colored pencils?

janeknapp 09-08-2011 09:19 AM

Yes, they are used to apply the gel.

judykay 09-10-2011 12:52 PM

Can you use them to color on printed fabric?

Quilt Mom 09-10-2011 12:53 PM

Wow! Thanks for the info on the tools.

I believe someone wrote on one of the topics on this board that she had done this. You cannot color/cover a darker color with a lighter color pencil only change the shade depending on the color underneath, I would assume.

Yes, I colored a darker green over a lighter green print and it worked.

judykay 09-11-2011 10:08 AM

Michaels has the 36 count for $22.00 and there is a 50% coupon in this weeks ad and the lady in front of me in line had an online coupon for 50% also.

Sorry the 12 count is $22.00. They also have the larger tins but don't remember the price.

janeknapp 09-11-2011 11:04 AM

The 12 count tin at dickblick.com is $15.75 + shipping.

24 - $30.89
36 - 49.34
72 - $88.79

This is much cheaper than Michaels unless you have a good coupon. There is a 50% one in this weeks flyer.

I saw a dark quilt top colored with a lighter color pencil at our quilt show this weekend, so it looks like it CAN be done.

Here is my own color chart to use as a guide with Derwent Inktense pencils. I wanted to show the vibrance after brushing aloe vera gel to half of the dry color on the fabric.

hcarpanini 09-23-2012 01:08 PM

That is awesome! Always wanted to try this. Where do you get your inks from?

wolph33 09-23-2012 01:54 PM

wow that is beautiful.

mermaid 09-23-2012 02:05 PM

Totally awesome. To think...I almost threw away a big bottle of aloe vera gel for burns the other day! If I can only find the pencils. Now where do I go to find artistic talent like yours?

rush88888 09-23-2012 02:47 PM

exquisite!

mcdor 09-23-2012 02:56 PM

You are an artist, great work.

Just buy the Inktense pencils. The watercolor ones are not as "intense" or quite as permanent. Good luck with these! I love them!

This quilt was colored by my mother with Parkinsons and arthritic hands while in a nursing home. Thank God I was able to finish it for my sister in January before she passed away in April and my mother in July.

janeknapp 09-24-2012 04:37 AM

I've found the pencils at dickblick.com. I love the set of 72. At dickblick.com you can order individual pencils, too, if needed. Prices have changed at this site since I ordered mine. Search the internet for best prices including shipping.

My three threads regarding this process here on the quiltingboard:

http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...g-t131922.html
I was exploring the process under this topic using Derwent Watercolor pencils and later changed to
Derwent Inktense pencils. Ideas changed along the way with input from others.

Go to Post #340 - This is a Tutorial for Derwent Inktense pencils on fabric (9-18-11) with added information regarding Loew-Cornell fabric brushes and the Pentel Gel Roller for Fabric pen. Artist trading cards and bookmarks are also included. This is the most complete tutorial.

http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...l-t140660.html
I had come to some conclusions under this topic. The tutorial here is brief (3 pages) under the guidelines of writing tutorials without websites. It is just three pages from the longer tutorial at post #340.

wow is all i can say and thanks for being so generous with your knowledge. I am keen to start and will print off all relevant info and go from there. Also great to see all that wonderful talent shown by all those kids (and who might not have known that they had talent)that have posted their works on here and it is all thanks to you Janeknapp!

Great job. I love how this was for your mom and you loved it too.

QuiltMania 09-24-2012 03:27 PM

I love my Inktense pencils. I bought a set when I was at the Grand Rapids AQS show. I also got a water brush to help set the colors. So far, I've only been playing a little on my son's quilt but already I love them.

Cheap Joe's Art Stuff has a sale on these pencils until 10/1/12. The box of 72 is $87.99.

Stunning!...What a wonderful idea. I have several questions for you if you don't mind. Are these regualr watercolor pencils? I have some but didn't know if they would work...no idea what kind they are..Aso, you mentioned aloe vera gel, is there a special kind?..Where do you purchase the products? I would love to try this technique..Thanks in advance..

I haven't had good luck with regular watercolor pencils. The Derwent Inktense pencils, in my opinion, are superior to any watercolor pencils. I don't know if there are other brands of ink pencils on the market.

The Fruit of the Earth aloe vera gel should be clear and can be found in the hand lotion section at Walmart which I have found to be the least expensive so far...$3.99 for 12 oz. I really do like the 20 oz. pump bottle for home use, but Walmart doesn't stock this size. I take the 12 oz. bottle with me "on the road" while working when riding in the car.

batikmystique 10-24-2012 04:20 PM

What a great technique! I've never tried this but I'm tempted now. Sometimes you just gotta get outside your comfort zone.

Silver Needle 10-24-2012 05:43 PM

I've used the Derwent Intense and Love them.
