colors
One of my quilting instructors made this statement about doing quilts in someone's "colors". "I didn't know every quilt had to be made in a person's "colors". I have quilts all through my house and never think ,oh, this isn't the right color to use in this room. I thought a quilt is to be used."
She wasn't against making a quilt for someone in their favorite colors, but she thinks we maybe losing something by being so "careful". Any thoughts on the subject? Cookie5 |
I try to make gift quilts in colors that are pleasing to the recipient....to ensure that they will be used and not stuffed into a closet somewhere, never to be seen again
|
I make quilts with colors that I like, I make a couple of them for me, and I donate the rest, the kids receiving them, don't care if their quilt is made with their "colors". If you don't like working with certain colors, then don't buy those colors, because YOU won't like the resulting quilt, in spite of the fact that someone else will like it.

I absolutly understand and like the instructors philosophy. My quilts are to be used and hopefully loved I do try to make it in a color and style the giftie will like, I do not try to exactly match their color scheme or theme of the room. Someone who needs it that well matched probably would not keep the a quilt visable when not in use anyway. even bed quilts I make something I think they'll enjoy if they end up keeping it under the giant bedspread or comforter no big deal at least it's being used to keep them warm.

I think I do this more often than not. The quilt I'm working on isn't in my colors. I don't really have anything green and its monochromatic green. Of course, I don't imagine it's for me either. I really don't need another twin quilt. I'm doing it because I flipped through designs on pintrest looking for what other people had done and found a really simple one that reminded me of a forest floor and I wanted to see if I could do something similar. I did it because it happened to inspire me.
The quilt I've already made is not colors I typically work with either. It was more inspired by this beige batique in my grandmas squares I liked that lead me to this bold butterfly pattern that lead to alot of blues and greens. I didn't have any idea what I was going to do with it until I got it home and realized that beige, light blue, and light green were the colors I was planning on painting the living room, so its the official living room throw blanket now. For me color is just part of the inspiration and design process. However, I am reminded of a phenomenon we discussed in color theory where people are attracted to colors that go with their particular physical coloration. Someone is more likely to pick out a color they can wear well than one that can't. |
In my home, I do like a quilt in a room to coordinate with my decorating scheme. And I have a rather hard time getting myself to do a scrap quilt. I also like symmetry . . . but that's just me. It doesn't disturb me to enter into a less-coordinated room. I can enjoy them. I just probably wouldn't want to live with it. Different strokes.

I tend to gravitate to certain colors. Looking at quilts on this board make me wish I could put some of these soft colors together. When I pick the soft colors I always think I need to add something for a pop. Other times I make things out of my comfort zone just because they look fun. These I usually give away anyhow. Just enjoy working on different colors from time to time. It gets boring if I stick to my normal color pallet.

I usually only make scrappy, so one of the colors in it should match their décor...several might contrast. I haven't had one returned yet, and I get request for more. I have made some with certain colors, and even for me, they are stacked in my sewing room, the one in my living room is a strip quilt, all different colors.

I use colors recipients like.... my own are bold with high contrast. When I wanted to make a quilt for my sister I saved pastels... she loves them. Then one day i said she should buy some... her response: "I'd never use that fabric... it wouldn't look good in my house".... dumped the pastel idea and went with blues/white.

I use co.our combinations I either like or have those amounts in my hoard of fabric. I do know friends who have to reproduce the pattern exactly in fabric , colours and quilting to me this would not be my quilt but a cy.

I prefer color coordination. Almost my whole house is done in autumn colors, so I tend to gravitate towards those colors. Lately though, I seem to be rather obsessed with lime green, purples and dark raspberry. I must be in a mid-life color crisis.

If you are making a quilt for you, use the colors you like. If you are making for someone special, use colors they like. If you are making for charity, use what you have in colors that appeal to you. It is more difficult to work in colors you don't care for.

I agree!!!!! Make a quit in the colors people like so it will be used and not put away!!!!! |
doesn't scrappy answer all the color dilemmas? it does for me!

We are such a diversified group of women that you can't put any restrictions on what each person prefers. I do like working with what is within my color preference and my winning quilts have shown that. It is difficult to work on something that we do not find pleasing. Some may have the gift to do scrappy while I am always struggling with that aspect. I do try to make quilts that are pleasing to my friends. I want my quilts to be loved but I hope they are on the Antique Roadshow in 2150 !! :)

Since I wanted my son to love his wedding quilt I had him choose the fabric and all. The quilt is on the bed. Objective obtained.

Generally, I make quilts in colors that I like, although I do occasionally stray, even making a brown quilt from a purchased kit, brown is not one of my favorite colors; however, it goes with our current couch. When making family reunion quilts every 2 years, I pick a color, ask my family to send fabric in that color and then work with what I've received, which can occasionally be a real challenge. My DDIL has asked me to make a quilt to go with their new king size bed and with the paint colors they have picked out. I will ask her for the paint chips she showed me, so I can do something they will like, although she hasn't requested a certain pattern. Before our darling Zoe was born, Jen picked out a couple fabrics, and asked me to make a quilt for her with matching curtains. They seem to like every thing I have made them, especially the appliqued and pieced quilt I made for our DGD Zoe for her big girl quilt, which I gave her at Christmas. My DS commented that he thought it was the best quilt I had ever done, which made all the work I put into it worth it, even working around rotator cuff surgery in May.

As a interior designer I make quilts I gift that go with the color's that go well with the rooms they will be used in. The ones I just make for the enjoyment of quilting I use the colors I think looks best with the pattern. Someone always just loves it and I give it to them. But for myself I never have got to keep but one and it goes with my colors in my bedroom. I am going to make one for my extra bedroom that I will have to change the colors in the room to match the quilt.

If possible, I always consider the color preferences of my recipient when I make a quilt. With my fussy daughter, I even had her choose the fabric. Some folks are very particular (I know I am), and others, not so much. I would never spend the time and money on a quilt they might not like. When I don't know their preferences, I try to choose colors/patterns that most people would like.

Maybe she was trying to get her students to go outside of their comfort zone with color since many people are afraid to use other colors than there favorites. The more you learn about color and ways to use it to good effect the more confident you become in your fabric selections.

This is a rabbit trail from this discussion, but if I am redecorating a room and will be making a new quilt for it, I find fabrics I like for the quilt and then pick the new paint color to match the fabric. It's much easier to match paint color to a quilt than to find fabric to match a certain paint color. I might even take some paint swatches that I like to the fabric store and try to match them, but if the fabric color isn't quite right, I can then find a better match of paint.

I am presently in a global swap. Each of the participants was asked to complete a form about themselves and one of the questions was about colors. The first lady, for March, asked for "country colors." She said she liked colors that reminded her of nature. So when I made her block I tried to fulfill that request by using colors that we see in nature. I hadn't really ever given that a thought. After I pick a pattern I start looking at the fabrics I have to use. There are patterns that, to me, cry out to be in blues. There are some fabrics that I have purchased purely because I just loved the colors. When I recently organized my sewing room, for the umpteenth time, I put my fabrics in order of theme. I wish I had done it order of color. Ah well on the next re-organization.

That instructor sounds like quilt police. I wouldn't take her words to heart. Quilting is the quilter's art, including color selection. Do it the way you want.
|
I thik she may have been trying to tell the class to think of the recipient when selecting colors for an item.
Was she talking about personal coloring - or was she talking about the colors of the home decor? |
I love this board!! only would be better if it had a like button!!
I spend more time than I have trying to get things perfect (never is) so now I do the best I can get it done and on to the next!! My life is going so fast and I want all my candle to be used before my light goes out:) |
