Have any of you ever combined machine quilting with hand quilting in the same quilt? I have a panel of a train scene that I want to quilt for my father. I haven't gotten the hang of free motion quilting yet, and my machine is giving me trouble trying to learn it anyhow. What I was thinking about doing was machine quilting - pretty much straight lines with slight curves - the tracks and around the cars, and hand quilting the details on the rest of the quilt that I want to highlight.

I suspect it will be just fine, just wondered if anyone else had ever done this.

I have - no one has ever said anything about it. In quilting, you can do as you want.........unless you're entering it in a contest.

I have done it on one quilt and I loved the results.
Here is the quilt you can see the hand quilting with the machine.

I did stitch in the ditch on most of the quilt. Hand quilting in the star blocks and then on the boarder I did wavy quilting with the machine and I hand quilted her hand print

I do it all the time! Straight-line machine quilting (b/c I'm just starting to *try* FMQ) and hand quilted motifs. No more wasting my hand work in the ditch, plus the durability of machine quilting, and the beauty and personal touch of hand quilting.

Yes, I have done it and liked the results.

I love to mix both I use the machine for in the ditch and the hand quilting as a feature it turns out great and doesnt take as long as doing it all by hand

Doing both works very well. My friend started hand quilting hers and I finished it with the macine. It is lovely.

You are right on the button! Hand Quilting for fine details and machine quilting the long lines, for strength, stability, and speed. I've done it before, and will do it again.

I am finishing up the JoAnn Fabric quilt block of the month from 1998 to 2000 (there are five total)and they are 12 different blocks and there are three of them that have hand applique or hand stitching with the other pieced blocks. I think it is totally up to you. A lot of people will machine piece the quilt and hand quilt. I think it is what you heart tells you at the time.

I say GO FOR IT! Quilting is all about what YOU want. You don't have to ask permission..and maybe hand and machine quilting in the same project is YOUR THING? We all need a niche. This could be yours...quilt on!
