Can anyone tell me if they have a specific name/brand of chair that they use when they sit to quilt? I am in the market for one but don't want to spend much over 100.00 or so.
I don'thave a name brand but I've found office chairs are the best. If your looking for new, stores like Staples have a wide range of floor models that you can sit in to test how they feel for you. I have also purchased one from a used office furniture store for well under $100.

any chair that you like , i use a computer chair, i think one without arms is good. juist try them out.
There has quite a bit of discussion on this, if you do a search, you will find lots of suggestions from all of us as to what we use. We each have different needs, so you will have a variety of chairs to choose from!!
I went to a few office stores until I found one that was the perfect fit :D:D:D

I too use office type chairs. I have removed the arms of several chairs.
I have the tightly woven commercial carpet, so I have to use the plastic chair mats under them. I love the ones that I can also lean back in for a change of position. I bought 2 saddle type stools for my knitting machines. I'm not sure about them yet. I haven't been able to use the knitting machines until my cardiologist ok's it. |
I have an office chair. It really make s a difference for my back.
I use one we bought for 20 dollars. It has no arms is adjustable and is comfy. It's an office chair one like the stenographers use.
I have an office chair too. I know Staples puts their chairs on sale pretty regularly. I just went to the store during the sale and played Goldilocks until I found the perfect chair.
I sat in a number of chairs in stores til I found the perfect one. I love my chair. It must be OK because the kids keep trying to steal it.

I know that my sewing chair is not typical of what many others use but since you asked the question, I'll respond. I use an old armless, height-adjustable office chair with the back removed. I don't lean back when sewing so don't need the back. I consider it good for my back that I sit upright and use my stomach muscles. Just my way.

well I had an old office chair from about 30 years ago I have used for my sewing chair. It has 4 legs, at the bottom, (now they make them with 5) which I did NOT want, as just one more leg to get in the way of my foot peddle.
It has casters to roll where ever I want it to go, and it has adjustable seat and back. Black. When we moved here and I had to go to the court house to pay taxs and reg, to vote I noticed the chairs, JUST like mine.(only done in brown) told the clerk if they got new chairs I wanted to buy the old ones. Long story short, got them this Feb. at auction, all 7 for $15, and they even gave me a paper shreader! Love my chairs!!! |
I bought a inexpensive swivel office chair with lift and left the back off. It's great. A stool is so much better then a chair for sewing.
I'm using a folding bar stool that I got from Walmart and a swivel topper that I got from AAA. It is supposed to be used to help people get in and out of the car but I use it to turn from my machine to ironing board. Because the stool is 24" high, my elbows are at the correct angle for sewing. I am fortunate to be tall so I can reach the floor. Vertically challenged may need to use a book to support the foot pedal.
So I just read on this thread that I could take the arms off the chair I have. I went straight to the sewing room with a screwdriver. But guess what???? It's the arms that hold the back to the seat. Oh well. Lost a screw, too. I feel like an idiot

Office chair..no arms..my choice. Just love it.
I use an office chair with the back on. I have a back problem so need the back. I also have carpet but went to WM and bought some of the sheet vinel,( can't spell LOL) works as good as the mats and a lot cheaper!
I bought an office chair first and it fell a part so i went to my fabric shop and bought one. It is so comfy and I don't have any problems with it. It costs more then a $100, but was worth the money.
Office chair no arms with a separate lower back support thingy.
I use an office chair that I got at Walmart. I don't like arms though. They seem to get in the way. I like being able to roll around.
I have carpet where I sew which means no wheels. I found an old sturdy wood chair with a wide seat, and tall back just the right height for my tall frame and it allows me to get right under the sew table with my knees. I made a new cushion for it and it works fine for me.
My old chair was getting floppy so I went to Office Depot and bought a new one. It is on rollers and just an office chair with short arms on it. I find it very comfortable and it is adjustable to each person. Has the height adjustment on the side for different uses. I think it was $59. or thereabouts. Sometimes you can catch a good sale. Good luck as a comfortable chair will prevent many aches and pains.
Sorry I just read through the listings. I also have a WalMart chair that my husband likes for the computer. I cannot sit in it without my back and legs hurting. It is not made for a woman in my opinion. You need to sit and try it out for a few minutes before making a decision. It it is not right don't get it as you will never be happy.
Don't know a brand anme. i bought mine at Sears when they had a 50% off sale. Make sure it has rollers because a quilter is always up and down to the iron or stash. No arms so you can get close to the machine.
 |
I use an office chair too. It was fine with the arms on, but I removed them so I could get just a tiny bit closer to my machine.
I have two office chairs - think they are from Office Max. Both are comfortable.
I took the office chair from the computer table and use it for sewing. It is comfortable, you can adjust the seat, arms, it swivels and leans back really nice (the computer table now has a kitchen chair..lol)...
Bought a stenographer's chair (without arms) from Staples for $69 -- have it for 10 years, good as new and very comfortable.
I use a office chair as well and definitely recommend taking the arms off as they can get in the way when you are at the machine. I get backaches often, so I even take this chair with me to long classes and retreats. I've gotten so used to a chair with wheels, that it's hard to go to class and not be able to scootch in just a little.
Just bought chair at Staples that is WONDEFUL and was just at $100... It is the MOST comfortable chair I have ever sat in!!!
My Must Haves were... 1) Removable arms (a must as far as I am concerned) 2) Back adjustable height wise.. (wanted back of chair, right in middle of my back 3) Back adjustable "seat" wise... Can bring back closer to front of chair (I am short legged, so this is a must also) 4) Height adjustable 5) Would be nice but not a must...Tilt feature so I could raise my feet up off the floor a little (for my foot control of course!) Staples chair has ALL these features!!! yipppeee!!!!! |
I got mine from Staples - go sit in them and see what works best for you
I use an armless office chair. It swivels, height is adjustable and so is the slant of the back. I rolled up an old towel, used masking tape to secure it around, then looped a bunji cord through this roll. I fastened this to the back of the chair using the bunji cord.
A physical therapist told me to save $... use a rolled up towel to support the lower back. My contraption might not be the best looking but my lower back is supported. |
I have a computor chair without arms from walmart for $20.00. They have a few different colors.
Mine is an office chair, without arms. Adjustable up and down feature is important. Back can be adjusted in and out also. Think I paid around $80 for mine. Its great as I can roll from the machine to the ironing surface etc.
I have an office chair also, but since we put in a laminate floor, when I push on the foot pedal of my machine, I scoot half way across the room. Its a riot. DH is figuring a way to lock the casters for me so its easier
Mine is an ergonomic computer chair from Staples and I just roll it from the computer to the sewing machine. Was around that price when I bought it; but that was a few years ago now. Sitting comfortably certainly makes a big difference!
Ikea has a pretty good selection of chairs and you can try them out. I found one I liked with a low back which fits low on my back. This kind seems to work best for me.
After herniating a lower back disk in February and have moderate arthritis in both my SI joints, DH bought me a chair of my choice for my birthday earlier this summer. I picked the Koala chair and was just under $200 with taxes. LOVE it! The wide range of seat heigth, from low standard chair to drafting chair seat heigth. Has great lower back support for me, and also love the foot rest it has.
New to all this, have been reading lots, learning lots, now I figure its time I interacted. I have an unusual chair or rather a stool. It is a workbench stool bought at local motor spare parts outlet (males in my family are all in the motor trade) on sale. has like Harley Davidson motor bike saddle seat. all adjustable thingy's, back, height seat etc., no arms, good solid base with foot rest and wheels, great. No 2 son wants it for his workshop, no way - til my will's read anyway. Love all the chat you girls and guys have.
