Our Moda sales rep stopped by today and gave the official word that all future Moda collections are going to be printed on the 60x60 thread count cloth that most quilters prefer. They will not be doing any more on the 75x75 finer but thinner cloth.

This is good news to all the people who were disappointed that some of the Moda fabrics were coming in on thinner cloth.

We had earlier been told that the 75x75 was actually more expensive for Moda than the 60x60, but that due to market conditions it was more readily available and that played into their decision to print some collections on the 75x75.

Great news! thanks for sharing. Moda is always the first fabric I look at when shopping.

knlsmith 06-22-2011 05:58 PM

I love moda!

Favorite Fabrics 06-22-2011 06:48 PM

What's especially nice about this is that Moda listened to their customers. Quilters said they preferred the thicker cloth, and Moda wisely is giving us what we want!

roselady 06-22-2011 08:42 PM

I have just recently seen the finer (75x75) Moda fabrics, they were very soft and nice. I don't know which I prefer, I wonder which will last longer? I guess the main problem I would have with them, would be mixing them with all the other quilt fabrics that I already have, because there is a distinct difference.

wolfkitty 06-22-2011 09:45 PM

Thank you, Moda! And thank you, FF, for keeping us updated!

OneMoreQuilt 06-22-2011 10:04 PM

Thanks for letting us know.a

Borntohandquilt 06-22-2011 10:11 PM

To be honest - personally I am not so happy about that decision, although I understand and respect it. I prefer the finer cottons with a 75x75 thread count because they are perfect for hand quilting! But I also know that I am in the minority and what I do is not what most quilters do.

gale 06-22-2011 11:38 PM

what lines were printed on the 75 x 75? I haven't bought fabric in a while and haven't been in a shop for a while either. Thanks for the update!

I would like to know the answer to this also. Good to hear that they are
going back to the heavier weight.

Borntohandquilt 06-23-2011 01:04 AM

The brands I know on the 75x75 thread count are Quilt Gate and some of the P&B fabrics.

Maureen 06-23-2011 02:54 AM

I buy a lot of Moda but I didnt even know some were thinner. I must not have bought any of the thinner ones. I just bought Moda Grace. I love the prints.

smagruder 06-23-2011 03:06 AM

Great news! I will continue to visit your shop. You are a great source of nice fabric.

I'm not sure of ALL the lines that were done on the 75x75, but of the ones we carried, it was Summer Breeze and Dogwood Trail.

katkat1946 06-23-2011 05:23 AM

That IS good news! Our LQS has stopped ordering Moda Marbles because they felt so flimsy and these have always be favorites!

Sandra-P 06-23-2011 05:58 AM

I have not bought anything recently, thriving on what I do have. So, have not had to use the 75x75 thank goodness.

Nan, I really appreciate that you periodically post news like this, providing the behind-the-scenes (or should I say cutting counters) insights, updates, etc. and seeking our input. I wish more retailers would do this.

thrums 06-23-2011 09:21 AM

ok...I need some education please

What does the 60X60 mean? Is that the thread size?

Is the cotton quality the same in 60X60 and 70X70?

Thank you.

Quilter7x 06-23-2011 09:22 AM

Thank you so much for sharing this info. Moda is my favorite line of fabrics.

Even I am not quite as much "in the loop" as I would like to be! Sometimes it's a comment that someone posts here on the forum that gets me to wondering about something, and then I go to my sources for an answer, or more information. I share what I find out.

60x60 is a measure of the thread count. It doesn't address the thread size (thickness of the individual threads). So you could have a 60x60 cloth with thicker or thinner threads; it's probably not the case that all 60x60s are created equal either.

But getting into thread size is probably way more technical information than the fabric companies are going to want to release... and my guess is that would be because they are sourcing the fabrics from different mills and there could be small variations in the fabrics; maybe not even enough that we would notice but that if they put ALL the specs out there in writing, they might open themselves up for trouble in the case of even the slightest differences.

Thank you for the info on the moda fabrics. I purchased the dragonfly summer line from lqs and didn't think the quality was there. Also it has many flaws in some of the line. I was so thankful I could get my quilt out of it, but I did have to piece my borders just because of flaws. I haven't talked to any moda people about this, but it is now the second line I had this problem with. I purchased 5yds of one color and 3yds of another and so forth. My quilt is approx. 100"x100". so needed the fabric. Still want to make pillow cases.
Thank You

Suzy

We carried some of the fabrics from this line and didn't notice any problems with them. Which ones did you buy? Was it a problem with the printing, or the weave of the cloth?

Suzy 06-23-2011 11:39 AM

Out of 8 different colors 5 had flaws. Some had noticeable flaws on the fronts which were white spots and some had visable lines going through them like a thread had been pulled. I do have the numbers of each piece from the selvages. I saw them as I was starching the fabric so I marked wherever they were with thread so I could work around those areas. It has surprised me because I have used there fabric for most of my projects, but will now be very cautious before spending that much money on moda for a while. The first time it happened I mentioned it to the quilt store and showed them the flaws in the fabric which I think was the migration line. they said they would talk to there supplier? I just wish Moda would be made aware of this.

Thank You

Suzy
