Coming to a city near you!
Hey everybody out there in "Quilting Board"land! Hope you all are enjoying this time of year! I have frequented this board for the past 3months, and am somewhat addicted. So, I thought I would try something on here. I am a flight attendant, and therefore, have the opportunity to visit several cities across the U.S. It gets really boring sitting around a hotel all day long, so I thought that some of the nice people on this board may have some suggestions on his/her favorite quilt shop? I would love to be able to start visiting more while working. I can't wait to see the responses I get! Thanks in advance! Kevin

What cities do you fly into?
Hey Gramajo.....mainly the larger cities in most states. I am based in Chicago, close to you! LOL
You should see some of the KC area shops. There is a nice one is less summit about 45 min from the air port.
the City Quilter is the shop to see when in New York!!!!! 25th Street and 7 ave....
If you fly into Harlingen, TX only one shop: Picket Fence
Well Not sure if you fly into Midway or Ohare , but I would check out Pieceful Hearts ... some of everything...In Lisle , or Quilt fabric.Com ... lots and lots of batiks ( yes a real store) in Willowbrook.
Kevin, I'm about an hour south of Chicago. My favorite LQS is Top Shelf Quilts in Frankfort; very friendly & helpful. If you're making a road trip to the south boonies, try them, B & J quilts in Kankakee, Roberts in Joliet. A couple of others west of I55 along I80 are The Fabric Center in Morris, D's Quilt Shop in Peru & Quilters' Garden in Princeton.
Dallas/Fort Worth TX has too many to mention. Quilt Country in Lewisville is a favorite as is Happiness is Quilting in McKinney, Quilter's Dream in Colleyville and Cabbage Rose is Fort Worth. enjoy!
I have had good luck looking in the phone book yellow pages.
We live in a very small place (138 registered voters) about 1 to 1 1/2 hrs to any town and I always try to find a phone book; however phone books seem to be getiing a bit scarce anymore. Good luck on your quilt store visits! delma |
Kevin,
In Phoenix, 3 Dudes in Ahwatukee, Quiltz in Phoenix off the 51 highway, many many more..but those two are my favorites that you might be able to find! |
Tyler, Texas has several. Look us up!
Take the South Shore from Chicago to South Bend and go to Ericas ! It is GREAT
Kevin, I have an app on my iphone that will give me the quilt shops in the area. I found it very useful when I was out of state and found several shops while I was traveling. My phone is a Droid and my carrier is Verizon.
Seems I remember a publication that lists LQS all across the country. You might Google that and see what you can find.
I have that same app on my iPad and it is great! It locates LQSs within a certain radius of where you are at any time if you have the location thing turned on. It's called Quilt Shops and it is sponsored by Quilters Club of America. I think it only shows the shops that are members of QCA which is ashame because you miss out on some other really great shops but when you are in an unfamiliar city, it's a great app to use.
Before I travel, I check this site: http://quilterstravelcompanion.com/
There is also a 2010-2012 book available that lists more shops than are shown online. |
Phoenix, AZ has several going both ways from the airport. Where do you stay when you have a layover? I'm on my way out the door right now, but will post names and addresses when I get back.
If you ever land in Port Columbus (OH) airport, you are only about 20 minutes from Quilt Beginnings, but you are also in a town that has five quilt shops so check out all of them.
If u ever come to the UP. Alley kats- she's the best!!!
If you ever make it to St. Cloud, MN, the shop you want is called Grubers. It is wonderful and the people are very friendly. If you are looking for fabric, (and who isn't?), there is a place in Brooklyn Park, Mn. that is quite overwhelming. The name is S.R. Harris and it is about 40 minutes from the Mpls./St. Paul airport. Bring an extra suitcase, lol.
There is a book that some quilt shops have that details where the shops are located....you might even be able to find it at a regular bookseller. Sorry, but I don't know the name, although someone on the Board probably will.
If you make it to Southern CA , The Fabric Patch, and Gingers Quilts both in Upland.
Hi Kevin! If you ever fly into Madison Wi. Mill House Quilts in Waunakee. Cute Bosties!
Neenee |
If you are in the beautifully Tampa Bay area, make sure you get to Rainbow's End in Dunedun. And you will be right by the beach also. Also agree with the SR Harris recommendation; the place is absolutely amazing.
I have said it before, and I will say it again.....Quilters are just nicer than your average person! Thank you ALL so much for your suggestions. I realize I can look in a phone book, and I also realize I could look on my android phone. I suppose I was looking for word of mouth more than anything, and I sure do appreciate those who voiced their favorites! THANKS!
Portland, Oregon ~ You have to go to Fabric Depot!
Hey Kevin! I am in Chicagoland too and the ones mentioned are great.
If you get to Minneapolis, Glad Creations is nice and the Blue Bamboo is a real trip--online warehouse open to the public. Lollies in Shipshewanna is awesome. My quilting GF doesnt fly so I dont get out of the WI/IL/IA/IN area too much. Been to some stores in San Antonio. |
Pensacola Florida. A & E Fabrics, 923 North New Warrington Road.....One word AWESOME!
One small area of the store is a pharmacy. Don't let that make you think it isn't a great fabric store. They will honor 40% off coupons from JoAnn's |
if you have a smart phone, there are apps to help you find quilt shops everywhere

Hey, CoyoteQuilts,
You didn't include 35th Ave Sew & Vac. It has the largest collection of quilting fabrics in the state. They have a website too. Then there is Patrick Lose's studio just across 32nd st from Quiltz. He h as his own line of fabric and patterns. If you call ahead you will know if he'll be there. He is a hoot to talk to and work with. ali

Kevin,
I have found copies of The Country Register in most major cities. Sorry, I don't have their website. They ususally have adds from LQS's and more in the area they cover. As above: Phoenix: 35th Ave Sew & Vac actually, because of my last job I went to ALL the quilt stores in the greater Phoenix area. Some are not considered LQS's because they have more than one store and sell machines and whatever other criteria the independent quilt store organization uses. Albuerquerque, MN: Southwest Decoratives and Kokopelli Quilting Co. features a lot of SW fabric and designs. I envy you your travels. Do you take a FW with you or hand work or what? ali |

Good luck on your quilt store visits! delma Kevin, Houston has quilt shops as do most of the out lying areas...about 2 hours or more from here to the closest one. Tyler, TX has a few...about 1 1/2 from here. Since you hit the larger cities, I would agree with checking out the area yellow pages or phone books. That's what I do or go on line to look for them. Good Luck and Good Quilting! |
Rhode Island probably not on your list but for anyone in New England area...Ryco in Lincoln RI...it's a wonderland of fabrics and trims
In Tampa Fl there is a lovely quilt shop on Kennedy Blvd. Keep Me In Stitches http://www.kmisinc.com/locations.shtml
If you're in St Louis check out The Quilted Fox and Jackman's. Both are within 30 minutes of the airport.
In Phoenix, AZ, Quiltz at 32nd St. and Thunderbird. It's huge and wonderful.
What a wonderful adventure. Portland Oregon has many wonderful fabric and quilt shops. My favorite is The Pine Needle in Lake oswego which is further away from PDX. A new store just opened in Vancouver Washington called Fiddlesticks. That is closer to the airport. I haven't been there yet, just heard about it on the Modern Quilt Guild blog. Happy flying and Happy Holidays.
