I love the utube on the d9p. What is a common size of one square. I know that 9 are sewn together before cutting.

I use 6 1/2? anyone else chime in on this? getting ready to start another one.. before I cut anything love to know what others do.

Thanks,
Ell

Ell, I've only made one so far (fun!) and I used 5 inch square but I doubt it matters what size you use.

dakotamaid 03-27-2011 01:06 PM

The smaller the squares the scrapier and busier it will look. I'd look at my fabrics first and decide how much of the focus fabric (corner pieces of the nine patch) I want to see.:):) 5-7 inch squares is the size I've used the most.

bj 03-27-2011 01:07 PM

Kinda depends on what size you want the finished block to be and whether you are combining with other blocks, I'd think. If it's all 9 patches, I don't think it matters.

Raggiemom 03-27-2011 01:10 PM

I used a charm pack for mine.

Sassylass 03-27-2011 01:12 PM

I am doing one now and have cut my fabric into 4 inch strips...

SuzanneG 03-27-2011 01:25 PM

I'm working on one now and I cut my squares 5 inches, and that will yield a 6.5" finished block. But just for comparison, if you cut your squares 6", you'll yield 8" finished blocks, and if you cut your squares 7", you'll get a 9.5" finished block. Hope this helps some! :-D

thank you for the explaination !! great !

I used 5-1/2" because I was using a panel of squares for some of the blocks. It came out great that size. I have another cut out with 5" squares but haven't started assembling that one yet.

I would think the only concern would be using too small of a square because you'd lose a bit of it once it's cut. I don't think I'd go much smaller than 4-1/2".

Thanks. I love how the pinwheel quilt came out. I used the pattern from the Moda Bakeshop Site, but enlarged it a bit. http://www.modabakeshop.com/2009/03/...aby-quilt.html

At first I wasn't overwhelmed by the disappearing nine-patch, until I found someone using only three fabrics instead of nine. THIS is stunning:

I agree - I also like three colors in this pattern. I'm making mine in dusty pink, dark brown and cream. I think this pattern looks great scrappy, but for me, it really shines with the three color combo! :D

sueisallaboutquilts 03-27-2011 06:06 PM

Oh I like it too!!!!! Never thought about 3 fabrics!

Jingle 03-27-2011 06:21 PM

I used three colors for one I did a while back, My oldest DGD gave it to her other Grandma after she lost her DH right before Thanksgiving. I posted pictures of it on here.

sueisallaboutquilts 03-27-2011 06:26 PM

Jingle is it this one??

D9P is great! As you can see, most any size would work!

watterstide 03-28-2011 03:07 AM

wow, if this was the one posted from message below. it is beautiful ! did you home machine quilt the top? was it hard to use your home machine to quilt a large project? I have used the D9P for a crib size. My daughter keeps asking for an adult size quilt, but I think how heavy the big projects are for home quilting.
Wow . beautiful.

Theresa 03-28-2011 03:51 AM

I've used 6" squares. Made 3 blocks across and 4 down. Use for donation quilts. Will have one ready soon for posting a pic. Love the D9P. It comes together so quickly.

Just for a lark and to use up some scraps, I did 8 inch squares. It was interesting to do such a large square but still very visually effective. It made a really quick lap quilt.

mcar 03-28-2011 05:33 AM

I had enough left over quilting material to cut 4 inch squares for a DP9 for a pillow top to compliment a quilt.

Sandyt 03-28-2011 05:37 AM

Taught this to my Sew and Reap community quilt project group, we have used 5 and 6 inch blocks so far. Some scrapy and one with yellows and blues and one with earth tones and one with purples and pink. Three of them we put sashing around the four blocks we made from the nine patch. Turned out beautiful. I do not know how to post pictures on here. Have to see if my hubby can show me. The tutorial I watched the women used 10 inch blocks. Have fun!!

yes , I used 6 1/2 in squares -- I made 5 blocks and then cut -- they are middle of my quilt with a border of little sunnbonnet sues and then a border of big sues and flowers and then 10minute blocks on top and bottom, making a 80 by 103 in quilt for my twin bed

some day in my lifetime >. I really want to do a sunbonnet sue !! thanks for sharing !

foxxigrani 03-28-2011 06:04 AM

I had some scraps(don't ask what size can't remember) but didn't want to throw them out, so made small 9 patch out of them. Didn't like that either so made D9P and loved them. I framed the small 6" blocks with a larger sashing to outline them, then used a inner strip dark blue so I have a strip quilt. I am using that for my hubbby's favorite wool blanket which has gotten really ugly over the yrs, but he loves it and its still in good shape. So will use it for batting and tie it.

Shirlrh 03-28-2011 06:05 AM

I used charm packs. But I think you could use any size. Let us see when you get done. I love the pattern!!

grannypat7925 03-28-2011 06:16 AM

I used 5 inch blocks and my final block was 13 inches square. My avatar shows the finished queen size quilt made with these blocks.

Ann912 03-28-2011 06:17 AM

Thanks Suzanne!

quilter1943 03-28-2011 06:59 AM

I just started one and am using 4 1/2. Decided to go smaller because of the way I want the solid color to look when I cut and re-piece it. Think a lot depends on the fabric you use. This one is just two - a flower and a solid.

gollytwo 03-28-2011 07:01 AM

The 6" one I saw wasn't as effective
I use 5" and 4" patches

After looking at the 3 fabric d9p, I tried to find any info on the sizes that the pieces were cut, any idea? I'd like to try one.

MDMPanther 03-28-2011 12:33 PM

thank you soooo much for asking this...I was doing some research so that i could do a D9P and I knew I didn't want it to small, but....well anyway....thanks for asking it and reading through the responses, i got my answer too!!
