How do I use the big cones of thread on my regular sewing machine? I've ordered some, but I've never used them, so I was wondering if they will fit on the thread holder on my machine?

cjomomma 08-29-2010 04:53 PM

Sit it in a coffee cup next to your machine and see if that works. Anyway that's what I would try.

hobo2000 08-29-2010 04:54 PM

Generally, you will have a stand that sits behind your machine that you place the large cone thread on and feed it thru your machine. Stands are available thru Clotilde and others, very inexpensively.

stefanib123 08-29-2010 04:55 PM

So, I can buy a stand for it?

stefanib123 08-29-2010 04:56 PM

Cjomomma, that sounds like what I'll try!

Lockeb 08-29-2010 04:56 PM

I use a Dritz stand like this one:

They have one at Joanne's and it is about 7$, and I used the 40 off.

Sadiemae 08-29-2010 05:00 PM

I use a thread stand, but I don't use the cheap Dritz one. I use one similiar to this one from Clotile's. http://www.clotilde.com/detail.html?...a=thread+stand
It is cast iron and much better. It won't bend and doesn't tip over.

Or you could get a really pretty one like this ...

Sadiemae 08-29-2010 05:10 PM

I would, if I had the money.

costumegirl 08-29-2010 05:29 PM

I use the Dritz one and I like it - never tips and thread doesn't tangle - guess it would depend on how you position it behind your machine.

I just like the cast iron. I can take it with me and I never have to worry about bending it. I took a Dritz one and bent it way out of shape. It is just personal preference like most of what we purchase. There is little difference in price so I bought the heavier one.

Very cool and very inexpensive.

Bubblegum0077 08-29-2010 05:44 PM

I use a small empty spool and put that under the cone. The spool rotates but the cone won't wobble off the machine. A cheap way to get the job done. Try it.

I used a old paper towel holder with an old wood thread holder(?) I guess and a metal coat hanger soldered to edge.

Awesome idea! I have the stuff to solder, but I am not sure how safe that would for me to do it...

theoldgraymare 08-29-2010 06:16 PM

The smaller spools I put in a coffee cup or mason jar. The big spools I just set behind my machine. Works fine.

A lady at JoAnn's told me she does that too. She is a tailor at a dry cleaners.

cjomomma 08-29-2010 06:27 PM

These are some really neat ideas. You all are so resourceful.

Mariposa 08-29-2010 07:14 PM

I bought a holder from Joann's years ago, and it still works great! Use a coupon, and it is inexpensive! :)

The thread need to come off the TOP of the cone - therefore, yo need the stand that pulls the thread UP and then it can feel to the machine

ganny 08-29-2010 07:30 PM

Didn't know I could use the cones. I will do the coffee cup thing or a mason jar one. Sounds good to me.

BellaBoo 08-29-2010 07:57 PM

Buy a quality thread holder because buying cone thread will save more then the thread holder will cost.

champagnebubbles 08-29-2010 08:04 PM

gosh you guys are great thinkers

Sassy913 08-29-2010 08:24 PM

I bought a wooden towel bar rack from a garage sale for 50 cents, glued the ends on a 1x4x18" piece of board I had left from shelving, put a thin dowel rod in between and then I can string 3-4 thread cones on it horizontally at one time. It works like a dream, may not look too fancy, but sure solved the problem. It is better weighted than the individual spool holders that seem to move around on me. I often sew on my folding table so the vibration from the machine causes the stands to slide. The board doesn't move. I think I'll paint it so it matches my sewing decor one of these days, but it works fine in the meantime. I'd rather spend my money on fabric any day than on the accessories.

I am getting my first cone and I really appreciate this thread. Thanks

EagarBeez 08-30-2010 06:30 AM

my DH made me a cone out of wood that fit both my machine and the cone

stefanib123 08-30-2010 06:41 AM

I'm so glad I posted this, lots of GREAT ideas!

I won a used one on ebay last night for $5!

There are all kinds on there, I had no idea there would be so many different kinds.

THANK YOU, everybody!

Bobbinchick 08-30-2010 07:02 AM

I use serger thread on my machine and the cones were too large for the spool spindle and I found that I put a regular spool of thread inside of the cone and that makes a nice thread adaptor. Works great too. Now my sister gave me 2 of the larger cones that are for long arms or some thing like commercial machines and I might be able to use those too if I put them in a cup or get a cone stand. Love my chepie thread adaptor, just a regular thread spool. Huggies, Fay

KathyAire 08-30-2010 07:39 AM

I have put a plastic straw over the spindle and put the cone on it. It works good in a pinch.

Deb watkins 08-30-2010 07:54 AM

I use a table top Christmas tree ornament holder purchased for $2. It looks like everything shown, the cone sits in the circle area and the thread just runs through the little star hook at the top. The cone already stands by itself, I don't need anything to run up through it.

Connecting Threads. I know because I've been trying to decide whether it's worth the cost. I love the Art Deco look of it.

NO they don't fit BUT what I did was get one of those wood paper towel holders at the Goodwill the ones that hold the towels upright. put your spool of thread on the small wood stick. take a stiff wire make a hook and drill a small hole for the wire into the large wood stick for the thread to go in. it works great :!: 8-) 8-)use old wire hanger :-D icon17 Lori Kayser

I just made mine out of a wire hanger. Works perfectly and I couldn't beat the price. You can't get any cheaper than free, lol.

gollytwo 08-30-2010 04:14 PM

I just put cones behind my machine in a coffee can
I bought a diddlybob (or something that sounds like that) which fits over spool prong and takes larger spools that otherwise flop around.

quilt3311 08-31-2010 03:49 AM

You can put your cone of thread in a coffee cup, tape a medium size safety pin to the back upper right edge of your machine (be sure it clears your fly wheel)and run the thread through the round part of the safety pin and then through the thread guides. It works for me.

Miss Priss 08-31-2010 04:17 AM

I put all my thread cones and spools in a jar in back of my machine. Works gret.

cjk 08-31-2010 04:40 AM

I have a banana holder for mine. Works great!
